UK - Sycamore Gap tree at Hadrian's Wall 'felled overnight', Sept 2023 *arrests*

Apparently they will only have to serve up to 40% of the sentence :( Historically I've always believed that people had to serve at least 50% of a prison sentence, but this must have changed (or I am mistaken).

"Both to blame

The judge said
she didn't believe Carruthers was drunk
and did not believe Graham simply went along with it.

'I'm quite sure
that you are both equally culpable for the felling of the tree
and the damage to the wall'."

I would have liked to have seen the 60% portion doing community service. Only seems fair to me if the appropriate sentence was 4 years and 3 months but they get to go home after 40%. JMO

"It felt like a murder trial."

I agree, it felt like a murder.
I actually think they will have to watch their backs when they get out of prison. Historical monuments and figures mean more to people in the UK than they do to us in North America with our much shorter history, in my opinion. I'm not saying someone will murder them, but they might get a couple of beatings.
