The U.S. Postal Service will impose its first-ever surcharge on packages to cover the rising cost of fuel, according to two people familiar with the matter.

The 8% surcharge will begin in April, and the current plan is to phase it out in January 2027, the people said. It will apply to packages but not letter mail.

"Lebanon’s foreign ministry said Tuesday it had withdrawn the accreditation of Iran’s ambassador, giving him until Sunday to leave the country.

Hours later, in a first, Iran fired a missile that was intercepted over Lebanon."
...
"Hezbollah condemned the decision by Lebanon’s foreign ministry as a “national and strategic sin,” calling in a statement on “the president of the republic and the prime minister to demand that the minister of Foreign Affairs… immediately reverse this decision because of its dangerous repercussions.”

  • White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said Wednesday afternoon that talks between Washington and Tehran are still ongoing. She warned that President Trump will "unleash hell" if a peace deal is not made.
  • The Pentagon is expected to send service members and hardware from the Army's 82nd Airborne Division to the Middle East, according to two sources, bolstering the U.S. military presence in the region as President Trump considers using ground forces in a war he claims is already won.
  • While Iran and Israel continue trading strikes and the Strait of Hormuz remains effectively closed, markets appear to have taken hope in Mr. Trump's optimism. Stocks are up and oil prices are back down. Amid the market tumult, concerns have been raised about possible insider tradingafter an unusual spike in oil futures transactions just before Mr. Trump announced talks with Iran.

"Tensions between Iran on the one hand, and the US and Israel on the other, continue to escalate. "The escalation is now taking place diplomatically," says Middle East expert Rudi Vranckx on De Afspraak. "Iran and the US are both indicating they are willing to escalate. It is like in the animal world. They are each beating their chests to see who beats the hardest."

The fact remains that Iran currently controls the Strait of Hormuz. "To put it simply: they hold the carotid artery of the global economy. If they then also close off the Strait of Bab el-Mandeb in the Red Sea, the global economy is faced with an immense problem. So, economically and strategically, Iran is very strong, while militarily taking a heavy beating. That is the schizophrenia of the situation."

"In the US, the fundamental problem is: there is no adult in the room anymore. There is no one who understands strategy and military tactics. As far as I understand, the generals aren't even allowed into the rooms themselves. They are allowed to execute the plans, but actually, they have no say."

Six in 10 adults say the recent U.S. military action against Iran has gone too far, 26% say it has been about right, and 13% say it has not gone far enough. Nine in 10 Democrats say the recent military action has gone too far, while 52% of Republicans say it’s been about right.

When thinking about the foreign policy goals of the United States, 65% say it is extremely or very important to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon, and 67% say it’s important to prevent U.S. oil and gas prices from rising. Fewer say preventing Iran from threatening Israel (39%) or replacing Iran’s government with one that’s friendlier to U.S. interests (33%) are important foreign policy goals.

Sixty-two percent oppose deploying U.S. troops on the ground in Iran. Half (48%) oppose sending government funds to aid Israel’s army. There is less opposition when it comes to conducting airstrikes against military targets inside Iran or targeted airstrikes to kill Iranian leaders, though only about one-third express support. Many don’t have an opinion one way or the other for any action asked about.

As the US-Israeli war with Iran continues, some commentatorshave speculated about why China and Russia appear to be keeping their distance from the conflict. Neither appears eager to intervene militarily to support Iran. Moreover, China is reportedly hesitant to send arms to Iran, while Russia is benefiting from the global oil supply shock caused by the conflict. Some rhetorical support aside, many commentators predict that Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping will not get meaningfully involved in Iran.

But such conjecture misunderstands the economic relationships and motivations behind the “Axis of Evasion,” the network of US adversaries that coalesce to circumvent Western economic restrictions. Specifically, it misunderstands how Beijing and Moscow enable Tehran to continue its violence across the Middle East through supply chains.

Traders bet hundreds of millions of dollars on oil contracts just minutes before US President Donald Trump announced on Monday that the US would postpone strikes against Iranian energy infrastructure.

Market data reviewed by the BBC shows the volume of trade spiked around fifteen minutes before a social media post by the president announcing the move.

The price of oil fell sharply after the announcement, dropping 14% in a matter of minutes. Traders who bet on the unexpected move would have made money.

Some market analysts say the unusual activity opens up the possibility that the bets may have been placed with prior knowledge of the decision.

Israel used white phosphorus to scorch earth in south Lebanon, researcher says

Damien Gayle
Wed 25 Mar 2026

When the M825-series 155mm artillery projectile bursts, expelling its felt wedges containing white phosphorus, it leaves a distinctive knuckle-shaped plume. That is how Human Rights Watch (HRW) researchers said they were able to verify that Israel was again using the notorious weapon over south Lebanon, reigniting accusations that it is breaking the laws of war.

Iran 'waiting' for American soldiers to arrive, says military adviser

Mohsen Rezaie, an Iranian military adviser and former commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, said that Iran is waiting for US troops to arrive in the region.

Rezaie in a post on X:

When they have achieved no results from their air force, which is their strength, what do they expect from a ground operation? Do American soldiers want to die for Israel? We are waiting.
Rezaie was recently appointed as the military advisor to Iran’s new supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei.

The US is poised to deploy more than 1,000 additional troops to the Middle East, signalling it may consider boots on the ground despite Donald Trump’s claims of “very good” talks with Iran.

'Gaza model must not be replicated in Lebanon,' says UN chief

More from the UN secretary-general, António Guterres, who earlier told the US and Israel it is “high time” to end the war and called on Iran to stop attacking its neighbours.

Speaking to reporters earlier, Guterres said people are living under “profound insecurity”, which he saw first-hand on a recent visit to Lebanon.

There, too, the war must stop,” he said, calling on Hezbollah to stop attacking Israel, and on Israel to cease its military operations and strikes.

He added:

The Gaza model must not be replicated in Lebanon.

Netanyahu says Israel expanding occupation of southern Lebanon

Benjamin Netanyahu said earlier that Israel’s forces are expanding a so-called “buffer zone” in southern Lebanon as the military presses ahead with its campaign against Hezbollah.

“We have created a ‘genuine security zone’ preventing any infiltration toward the Galilee and the northern border,” Netanyahu said in a video statement.

“We are expanding this zone to push the threat from anti-tank missiles further away and to establish a broader buffer zone,” the Israeli prime minister said.

Israel said on Tuesday that it would seize parts of southern Lebanon to create what it described as a “defensive buffer” – prompting fears that Israel is planning another protracted occupation.

During a meeting with the military chief of staff, Israel defence minister Israel Katz said Israeli forces would “control the remaining bridges and the security zone up to the Litani”, a river in Lebanon that meets the Mediterranean about 30km (20 miles) north of Israel’s border.

Katz added that all bridges over the Litani river “have been blown up and the IDF will control the remaining bridges”.

Israel’s destruction of bridges, homes and other civilian infrastructure in southern Lebanon had prompted fears that it was cutting off the region from the rest of the country, and planning another occupation – with the hundreds of thousands of displaced Lebanese left without homes to return to.

The previous day, Bezalel Smotrich, Israel’s far-right finance minister, had called for annexation outright, saying Israel should “apply sovereignty” in areas in southern Lebanon, signalling this expansionist vision that has alarmed critics at home and abroad.

The Israel Defense Force has intensified its air offensive on southern Lebanon and is hinting that it's preparing for a ground invasion. Lebanese authorities estimated that 1,039 people have died during the three weeks of conflict. Israel claims that more than half of those killed are members of the pro-Iranian militia Hezbollah, but the Lebanese Ministry of Health maintains that 158 were children or healthcare workers. Israeli aircraft continued their bombing campaign on March 23, targeting bridges connecting southern Lebanon to the rest of the country. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz announced on Tuesday that the Israeli military will establish control over the entire southern part of Lebanon up to the Litani River.

The Lebanese Ministry of Health has recorded 128 attacks against medical facilities or equipment, many of them south of the Litani River, and has declared them violations of international law and the Geneva Conventions. Amnesty International states that “the absolute impunity Israel has enjoyed” in previous wars encourages the repetition of crimes such as the forced displacement of civilians, and adds that “making unsubstantiated accusations” that ambulances are being used for military purposes does not justify “treating hospitals and medical transport as battlefields.”

On March 23, far-right ultra-nationalist Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich explicitly called for the annexation of southern Lebanon, making the Litani River “the new northern border” of Israel. The government of Prime Minister Nawaf Salam outlawed Hezbollah’s armed wing on March 2, the same day the militia resumed attacks against Israel, which triggered the 2026 Israel-Lebanon war. However, Salam has been unable to contain the militia’s hostilities toward the Jewish State, at which it has been firing 150 rockets daily, according to the Israeli army.

Dr. Abozeid, director of Najdeh Hospital in Nabatieh, states that Lebanon’s ongoing economic crisis, with the local currency devalued by more than 90% since 2019, prevents many civilians from fleeing their homes in the south for safer areas. Now, Israel's bombings of the bridges makes escape impossible and restricts medical care in the border region, where international law protects the right of civilians to remain.

Israel prepares major invasion of southern Lebanon, to the despair of its inhabitants: ‘Entire families are arriving dead’

The Pentagon is developing military options for a "final blow" in Iran that could include the use of ground forces and a massive bombing campaign, according to two U.S. officials and two sources with knowledge.

Why it matters: A dramatic military escalation will grow more likely if no progress is made in diplomatic talks and, in particular, if the Strait of Hormuz remains closed. Some U.S. officials think a crushing show of force to conclude the fighting would create more leverage in peace talks or simply give Trump something to point to and declare victory.

In a Truth Social post, he warned that Iranian officials “better get serious soon, before it is too late, because once that happens, there is NO TURNING BACK, and it won’t be pretty!” Iran has publicly dismissed Mr. Trump’s plan and insisted that the fighting would end only on its terms, though some Iranian officials have privately signaled that they are open to negotiations.

Former General Marc Thys: "Today we are more likely to believe what Iran says than what the US says."

"After President Trump had already announced that the US is negotiating a ceasefire with Iran, the American newspaper The New York Times reported yesterday that the country had delivered a 15-point peace plan to Iran. "They are going to make a deal," the American president stated confidently. But Iran is not impressed. Consequently, the country has not accepted the plan.

"For both countries, it is a matter of avoiding loss of face," says former General Marc Thys on Terzake. "But for the US, there is a military necessity to at least arrive at a different pace of war. The US only has days to weeks of defensive missiles left, while Iran still has months of attack drones."

But can the US simply withdraw from this? "A way out will have to be found that is acceptable to domestic opinion. The US was dragged into this war by Israel and entered it with too much arrogance. They chose to launch those attacks themselves, but did not really consider the consequences."

"One of those effects is the loss of trust in Europe. American companies are feeling the economic consequences of that. Today, we are more inclined to believe what Iran says than what the US says. To be clear: you shouldn't believe everything the Iranian regime says either. But at this point, we simply no longer know what is happening."

  • President Donald Trump said that he would extend a pause in attacking Iran’s energy facilities by 10 days, to April 6, at the request of the government of the Islamic Republic.
  • “Talks are ongoing and, despite erroneous statements to the contrary by the Fake News Media, and others, they are going very well,” Trump said in a Truth Social post announcing the pause.
As per Iranian Government request, please let this statement serve to represent that I am pausing the period of Energy Plant destruction,” Trump said in a Truth Social post.
