Just hours before he is scheduled to speak about the Iran war in an address this evening in Washington, President Trump said he no longer cares about the enriched uranium that Tehran still possesses because it is buried deep underground, as he continued to offer conflicting signals about how soon the war could end.

“That’s so far underground, I don’t care about that,” he said in a Reuters interview, referring to Iran’s stockpile of uranium, which was largely buried after the June 2025 strikes. His comment was sharply at odds with his argument that a main goal of the war was to prevent Iran from being able to produce an atomic bomb.

War-torn Lebanon is facing ‘fastest growing displacement crisis in the world,’ says international aid organization president

BY KAREEM CHEHAYEB

David Miliband, President of the International Rescue Committee made these remarks during an online briefing with journalists after visiting Lebanon and Syria.

More than one million Lebanese were displaced during the past month in the latest conflict between Israel and the Hezbollah militant group. Israel has issued evacuation orders for large swaths of southern and eastern Lebanon, as well as Beirut’s southern suburbs. Only a small portion of them are staying in government-run public schools turned-shelters, while others stay with family or even in tents on the streets.

“There is nothing like driving in front of the Lebanon yacht club and in front of it are Lebanese in tents who are displaced,” said Miliband, who decried the tiny country’s situation as a “silent emergency that is getting very little attention.”

In letter to Americans, Iran’s president asks if the war is in their interest

BY TOQA EZZIDIN

“Exactly which of the American people’s interests are truly being served by this war? Was there any objective threat from Iran to justify such behavior?” President Masoud Pezeshkian said in the letter that he posted in English on his X account on Wednesday.

He said that, in its modern history, Iran never chose aggression “despite possessing military superiority over many of its neighbors.”

Further, the Iranian president signaled that the U.S. has entered the war as a proxy for Israel, and insisted that what Iran continues to do in its attacks against neighboring countries is a “measured response grounded in legitimate self-defense”.

“Is ‘America First’ truly among the priorities of the U.S government today?” he asked.

Iran's president rejects perception of Iran as a threat, in open letter addressed to American people

Iran’s president Masoud Pezeshkian has rejected portrayals of Iran as a security threat, and described the perception of it as such as a product of the “political and economic whims of the powerful”.

In an open letter addressed to the people of the United States and carried by state media outlet Press TV, he argued that Iran’s modern record is defensive as he urged Americans to “look beyond political rhetoric” and reconsider their view of his country.

Iran, by this very name, character, and identity – is one of the oldest continuous civilisations in human history. Iran has never, in its modern history, chosen the path of aggression, expansion, colonialism, or domination .… Iran has never initiated a war. Yet it has resolutely and bravely repelled those who have attacked it.
He went on:

Portraying Iran as a threat is neither consistent with historical reality nor with present-day observable facts. Such a perception is the product of political and economic whims of the powerful, the need to manufacture an enemy in order to justify pressure, maintain military dominance, sustain the arms industry, and control strategic markets.

Iranian president writes letter to Americans - and makes no mention of ceasefire

In a letter addressed to the "people of the United States of America", Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian says Iran "never initiated a war" despite what he describes as "enduring occupation and invasion".

The letter's publication comes hours after US President Trump claimed "Iran's New Regime President" - without clarifying who he was referring to - had asked the US for a ceasefire.

In the social media post, Trump said the US would consider a ceasefire "when Hormuz Strait is open, free, and clear. Until then, we are blasting Iran into oblivion or, as they say, back to the Stone Ages!!!"

Pezeshkian makes no mention of a potential ceasefire in his letter.

The Iranian people have no ill will towards the people of America, Europe, or neighbouring countries, he writes, concluding that the choice between "confrontation and engagement" will "shape the future for generations to come".

"President Trump said that he expected the U.S. military campaign in Iran would be over “very soon” and dismissed Iran’s closure of the Strait of Hormuz, which has jolted global energy markets, as a problem for other countries to resolve.
...

The main result of the war will be closing the strait to the U.S.
...

President Trump declared on Tuesday that he had already achieved one of the primary objectives of his attack on Iran, the elimination of its ability to build a nuclear weapon. There is no evidence that the United States or Israel has removed or destroyed the country’s stockpile of near-bomb-grade fuel.

“I had one goal,” Mr. Trump said in the Oval Office late in the afternoon. “They will have no nuclear weapon, and that goal has been attained.”

"US weapons are purchased by European allies through the PURL program, to then send them to Ukraine.

US President Donald Trump has threatened to stop selling weapons to the EU for Ukraine unless European NATO countries provide assistance in reopening the Strait of Hormuz. Trump wanted to force the Europeans in this way to join a 'coalition of the willing' that is supposed to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

Initially, European countries wanted nothing to do with it. "Not our conflict," was the sentiment at the time.

After various talks with Trump, NATO chief Mark Rutte has ensured that several core members, including France, Germany, and the United Kingdom, are nevertheless willing to contribute to security in the Strait."

"Trump is increasingly desperate to tell a good news story for a domestic US audience," she said.

"While he still has the support of his core constituency, even those people are starting to question whether the mounting costs are worth it. "The pressure is on, and Trump is increasingly needing to tell a story of victory."

Polls suggest Americans are against a protracted war with Iran, and experts say it could cost Trump at the November midterm elections.

By trying to frame it as a victory, Trump is seeking to counter claims the mission remains incomplete while the Iranian regime endures, Genauer said. Parmeter says it's unclear what Trump is aiming for.

"It's hard to know with President Trump because what he says varies from day to day," he said. "It seems Trump does want to end the war on his terms, but the Iranian regime won't end the war unless it's on its own terms, which would include provisions that the US will not attack Iran again, which the US will refuse to give."

Sadara Chemical Company, a joint venture between Saudi oil giant Aramco and US chemicals firm ‌Dow, has announced that it has temporarily shut down production at its parent-operated plant, citing ongoing supply chain disruptions.

Sadara Chemical operates a complex in the Saudi city of Jubail with annual production capacity of over 3 million metric tons of chemicals and plastics.

The shutdown comes as the conflict involving Iran, the US and Israel continues to resonate across the Middle East, disrupting supply chains, constraining the movement of feedstock and finished products, and heightening risks to critical energy and industrial infrastructure.

Tzachi Hanegbi, who served as Israel’s National Security Advisor until last October, says Israel will continue its confrontation with regional enemies like Hezbollah, even if Washington forces an end to military action in Iran.

For the past two and a half years, Israel’s prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, has led his country in a rolling conflict with Iran and its allies around the region, each time promising that the next war would restore Israel’s security and vanquish its enemies.

Iranian media are reporting that Kamal Kharrazi, a senior official regarded as a reformist within Iran's political system, has been severely injured in an airstrike on Tehran. His wife is said to have been killed.

Trump keeps describing the current leadership of Iran as "more reasonable". This reported attack will raise questions about why Kharrazi was targeted in a system now increasingly dominated by hardliners.

"Kamal Kharrazi, head of Iran’s Strategic Council on Foreign Relations, said there is currently no room for diplomacy with the United States.

He stated that diplomacy with the United States is no longer possible, explaining: “Because Donald Trump deceives others and does not remain committed to his promises.”

Kharrazi also said that the United States and Israel attacked Iran twice during the course of negotiations.

Asked whether Iran might negotiate with Washington at some point, he replied: “I don’t think so—unless there are guarantees that the Americans and Israelis would not dare to attack Iran again.”

UK will seek closer ties with EU in light of Iran war, Starmer says

ByBecky Morton
Political reporter

1 April 2026

The UK will pursue closer economic ties with the European Union in light of the war in Iran, Sir Keir Starmer has said.

The prime minister told a news conference he would use a summit with the EU later this year to seek more cooperation with the bloc on the economy and security.

It comes as relations between the US and the UK have been increasingly strained by the PM's refusal to be drawn further into the war with Iran.

Reality for many Israelis is a new state of 'perma-war'

Lucy Williamson
Middle East correspondent, reporting from Jerusalem

On the highway from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, American flags now hang alongside Israeli ones – a public sign of appreciation for US involvement in fighting Iran.

America’s decision to wage war on Iran opened up possibilities for Israel to attack its old enemy in new ways, but this war has so far not resolved any of Israel’s regional conflicts in the way its prime minister suggested it would.

And as US President Donald Trump talks of winding up the joint offensive in Iran, Israeli forces are still holding territory in Gaza and Syria, with new instructions from their defence minister to take a large swathe of southern Lebanon as a "buffer zone" against Iran’s ally Hezbollah, displacing 600,000 people.

Nato chief to visit Washington amid Trump threats to leave the alliance

Nato secretary general Mark Rutte will visit Washington next week for what a spokesperson for the military alliance called a “long-planned visit” that comes after Donald Trump blasted European allies over differences on the Iran war.

“I can confirm that the Secretary General will be in DC next week for a long-planned visit,” Nato spokesperson Allison Hart said. A White House official also confirmed the visit.

Iran has demanded a guaranteed ceasefire to end the war permanently, a senior Iranian source told Reuters, while continuing to insist active negotiations are not currently taking place.

The source said intermediaries contacted Iran on Tuesday, with discussions focused on continuing diplomacy, but added that no talks have taken place via mediators for a temporary ceasefire.

"NATO Alliance on the brink.

Washington accuses Europe of betrayal in war with Iran.

- Donald Trump and his administration are questioning NATO's very existence,
calling it a 'paper tiger'.
Washington is blaming the failures of Operation Epic Fury in Iran,
accusing European capitals of disloyalty and blocking military bases.

- Experts view the White House's narrative as unfair and a purely political game of blaming allies.
Despite the lack of a formal NATO mandate,
European countries are actually supporting the US,
shooting down Iranian drones and providing infrastructure in Cyprus and the UK.

- The upcoming summit in Ankara
will be a crucial test of the Alliance's cohesion, but its end is unlikely.
The military and planning structures are too tightly integrated
for a single political crisis to lead to the United States withdrawing from NATO,
which would be risky for the Americans themselves."
