US-Israeli targeting of medical centres 'crime against humanity', Iran president says

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian is calling attacks on Iranian medical institutions a "crime against humanity".

"What message does attacking hospitals, pharmaceutical companies and the Pasteur Institute as a medical research center in Iran convey? As a specialist physician, I urge WHO, the Red Cross, Doctors Without Borders and physicians worldwide to respond to this crime against humanity," Pezeshkian writes on social media.

The Pasteur Institute in Tehran, Iran - a century-old public health and research centre - was heavily damaged in strikes on Thursday, according to Iranian authorities.

'If you break it, you own it,' Badenoch says of Trump's Iran comments

Tory leader Kemi Badenoch has told Donald Trump "if you break it, you own it" over the Iran war, saying he shouldn't be "abandoning a mess that he's made".

Badenoch has been asked about President Trump telling allies to go and get their own oil from the Strait of Hormuz.

Speaking in Redcar, Teesside, the Conservative leader says the "special relationship is between the UK and the US, not between Donald Trump, and Keir Starmer".

"But if I was speaking to him [Trump], I'd be saying, 'if you break it, you own it'," says Badenoch.

"He should now not be abandoning a mess that he's made, if he thinks that it is a mess."

The Tory leader says she wants to see the conflict "brought to an end", arguing that "it doesn't feel like there is a co-ordinated plan" to achieve this.

Same response as always - Iran responds in kind:

"A bridge was hit during a US-Israeli attack on Tehran, Iranian state television reports. It reportedly involved the B1 bridge in Karaj, in western Tehran. Two casualties were reportedly reported in the attack.

Iran is now threatening attacks on bridges throughout the Middle East, including in Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates."

Article 2 April 2026:
Referring to the dimensions of the incident, the spokesperson stated that the attack by U.S.-Israeli forces on the Pasteur Institute of Iran—one of the oldest and most renowned research and public health centers in Iran and the Middle East—was a heartbreaking, brutal, and deeply inhumane act. The institute was established in 1920 based on an agreement between the Pasteur Institute of Paris and the Iranian government.

Article 2 April 2026:
The rhetoric sharpened further with his warning that Iran would be bombed "back to the stone ages, where they belong".
That remark has had a tangible effect inside Iran, fuelling anger across social media - including among those opposition supporters who had previously viewed Trump as a potential agent of change.
Rather than encouraging internal pressure on the system, for some it has reinforced a sense of a country under siege.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has asked the Army's top uniformed officer, Gen. Randy George, to step down, the Pentagon said Thursday, as the United States wages a war against Iran.

A Pentagon official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the sensitive matter, confirmed that George has been asked to take early retirement from the post of Army chief of staff, which he has held since August 2023.

The ouster of George is just the latest of more than a dozen firings of top generals and admirals by Hegseth since he first took office last year

"China's New Statement on Hormuz:

'Illegal Military Action'.

1775171097363.jpeg

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said that
'illegal military action by the US and Israel'
is causing problems with navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.

Referring to US President Donald Trump's address announcing massive attacks on Iran,
she called for an immediate halt to military operations.

'Only a ceasefire and achieving peace in the region
can fundamentally guarantee the security of shipping lanes',
she added.

China also condemned attacks on civilian facilities in Iran, including schools,
calling them 'a serious violation of international humanitarian law'."

" 'It's not clear'.

In Australia they're reacting to Trump's address.

1775171654233.jpeg

The international community is growing concerned about the protracted armed conflict in the Middle East.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese
has publicly questioned the wisdom of the United States continuing its vicious attacks on Iran,
demanding immediate de-escalation
and pointing to the enormous global costs.

The Australian Prime Minister indicated
that after the implementation of the American plans,
there is no clear goal in sight for further operations against Iran.

Albanese stressed
that Australia is not actively involved in the conflict;
he attributed the increase in fuel prices to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz by Tehran."

Over 40 countries launched on Thursday a coalition to secure free passage through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical shipping lane for energy exports, once the hot phase of the war between the United States, Israel and Iran comes to an end.

The representatives from Italy, the Netherlands and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) issued a joint call for a "humanitarian corridor" to safeguard the shipping of fertilisers and prevent a food crisis, according to the Italian foreign ministry.

The multinational coalition will pursue "the collective mobilisation of our full range of diplomatic and economic tools" to enable a "safe and sustained opening" of the Strait of Hormuz, said the British foreign secretary.

President Donald Trump’s primetime address on Iran did little to relieve rising alarm from plugged-in Republicans in key states across the country who see the war as pushing costs higher and their midterm chances ever-lower.

Trump declared Wednesday night that the U.S. offensive in Iran is “nearing completion” but warned that military operations would intensify over the “next two to three weeks.” He attempted to clarify his goals for the war — to destroy Iran’s nuclear capabilities — and insisted it was never about regime change. And he shrugged off the spike in oil and gas prices as a “short-term increase.”

To a number of GOP strategists and local party leaders involved in key congressional and gubernatorial races, the message was too little, too late and too jumbled.

Three ships have transited the Strait of Hormuz overnight, indicating potential progress in negotiations between Iran and Oman over the vital shipping lane.

Two supertankers carrying crude oil and one LNG tanker have transited the strait. All three are owned by Oman.

The development follows Iran's deputy foreign minister for legal and international affairs, Kazem Gharibabadi, saying Iran and Oman are drafting a protocol to "oversee transit through the Strait of Hormuz", according to Iranian state media.

More ships are passing through the Strait of Hormuz, says the maritime intelligence firm Windward.

It said the number of transits through the critical waterway increased to 16 on Wednesday – the third consecutive daily rise.

All 16 vessels used a route via Larak Island. Windward said that’s a sign that more countries are “negotiating with Iran to get ships through” and “suggesting the pace of transits could rise in coming days.”

"Iranian Missile Attack on Israel:

Tehran Warns US.

1775213473913.jpeg

A restless night in the Middle East.

An Iranian missile with a cluster warhead was fired at Israel.
Houthi rebels and Lebanese Hezbollah also joined the massive attacks.

An Iranian missile equipped with a cluster warhead fell on the territory of central Israel,
causing massive infrastructure damage in as many as ten different locations
(including the cities of Ramat Gan and Petah Tikva).

Thursday's strike is Tehran's direct response to the earlier American destruction of a strategic bridge in the Iranian city of Karaj.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Aragchi clearly warned Washington
of the economic consequences of striking key oil and gas production points there,
which could undermine global energy security."

More than 100 experts on international law have signed an open letter expressing "profound concern" about what they see as serious violations of international law by the US, Israel and Iran in the Middle East war.

They say the US-Israeli decision to attack on Iran was a clear breach of the United Nations Charter, which prohibits the use of force outside of self-defence or when authorised by the UN Security Council.

The experts point to "alarming rhetoric" being used by officials, including US President Donald Trump's threats to "obliterate" Iran's power plants.

In the letter, the experts also took issue with Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth's statement that "no quarter" be given for enemies.
Denial of quarter in conflict means refusing to spare the life of anybody, even those who surrender or are wounded.

Dramatic videos show the attack on the B1 bridge in Iran

What to know

  • TRUMP WARNS IRAN AFTER BRIDGE STRIKE: President Donald Trumphas warned that the United States "hasn’t even started destroying what’s left in Iran," his latest threat to intensify attacks on civilian infrastructure if there is no deal to end the war. He earlier posted video of a bridge being bombed.
  • IRAN RESPONDS: Iranian media said eight people were killed in the strike on the B1 Bridge between Tehran and Karaj, which officials said was still under construction. "Striking civilian structures, including unfinished bridges, will not compel Iranians to surrender," said Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.
  • HORMUZ ACTION: The U.N. Security Council is expected to vote tomorrow on a proposal that would authorize defensive action to allow vessels to safely transit the vital Strait of Hormuz trade route. Dozens of countries held virtual talks on the issue, as Trump insists allies should step up to reopen the waterway that Tehran effectively shut in response to the U.S.-Israeli attack.
  • DEATH TOLL: More than 3,000 people have been killed across the Middle East. In Iran, Israeli and American strikes have killed more than 1,900 people, according to the country’s deputy health minister. At least 1,300 people have been killed in Lebanon, and 19 have died in Israel. Thirteen U.S. service members have been killed, and two more died of noncombat causes.

International law experts allege violations in Iran war

Speaking to BBC Radio 4's Today programme on Friday, Tom Fletcher, UN humanitarian chief, said that "somewhere along the way" international law had been "thrown aside".

"The rules are very clear and very strong," he added, but the problem was "enforcement". He described the war as "reckless".

[…]

The US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency says that 1,606 civilians, including at least 244 children, have been killed in Iran since the start of the conflict.

[…]

The experts' letter says the strike "likely violates international humanitarian law, and if evidence is found that those responsible were reckless, it could also be a war crime".

The letter has been published in Just Security, external, an online journal based at New York University School of Law.
