I also agree! We know that his mines are most likely unsafe, but he is a human being and I'm sure he has feeling just like the rest of us. As irresponsible as he may have been I don't think he ever wanted something like this to happen.
I can't help but wonder if the press scared him away. As soon as the second accident happened I saw Fox was showing montages of him that put him in a very ugly light. He could be avoiding the press conferences for that reason. Or maybe after the second accident he couldn't take anymore emotionally. Seriously, if I was in his position I wouldn't be able to help thinking God was out to get me.

I'm sure Murray never wanted any of this to happen. I'm also sure Murray hoped the 6 trapped miners would be found alive & well & this would all go away.

I don't think the press scared Murray away. Murray himself venomously denied doing "retreat mining". Murray himself went to the podium 'willingly' & called the reporters misinformed & the reporting they do should totally be disregarded & not believed.

Murray never stopped .....he went on to name the individuals who disagreed with him & named the media outlets they worked for, mostly Fox news!

Murray had plenty of opportunity to 'apologize' or explain his decision for making false statements at a PC, he made the choice not to do so.

Murray got mad at the 6 trapped miners families for questioning him about something. It was Murray who got mad & walked out.

Murray himself decided what was to be said at the PC & what wasn't. He chose to flame & defame many many people. He never batted an eye at it. He knew of the chances he may be eating his words. Today he is.....

He himself did make very ugly choices & decisions. He also hurt many people by shooting his mouth off, he blatantly lied to COA.

He only has himself to blame for his choices & what people think of him today. As my Mom used to say, he made his bed now lay in it.

You may choose to crucify Murray, for not not being capable of dealing with attacks from the media, in this situation, but understand that he was operating his mine within the laws of MSHA, so if there are future changes to be made regulating mining operations, they will have to be done within MSHA, and their rules and regulations. It's the same problem as every other government agency, the lobbyists are former officials of MSHA, and the engineering firms, working with MSHA, to have mining plans approved for Utah Miniing, are well connected to MSHA. Murray met their demands, otherwise his mine wouldn't have been operating.

Mining will never be completely safe, but since the demand for coal, and therefore, miners, is so high at this time, with so much mining going on, the opportunity exists for safety improvements to be made within the mining industry/MSHA, so that's probably what will happen as a result of this accident.

The truth is...it is entirely political. Murray has been very outspoken about his contacts on Capital Hill and loves to "drop names". He is a huge contributor to many a campaign. Even though Murray may have met their demands...I assure you the demands he met have been rounded so he could do so.

The key word in your paragraph is Lobbyist. People don't understand the role they play in politics. They are paid very, very well to keep the special interests of groups in favor with the federal government. They are actually the ones calling the shots and not the politicians. When you are "in bed" with special interest groups be it oil, gas, coal, or down to the AARP...the politicians are being "courted" and "coerced" as it is...to make decisions on laws pertaining to what directly affects the group adversely.

I know from growing up in that political fishbowl...it isn't who you know anymore...it is about WHAT you know about who you know and how much money you can throw their way that decides how far you can go with an agenda.

There is talk that the man from MSHA who has been leading this charge into the mine and helped approve this mining plan plus the subsequent safety plans is going to be reviewed very carefully. MSHA isn't immune from political pressure anymore than any other group in the mining industry and who knows the people Murray has in his pocket at this point. A lot is going to come out in the following aftermath of this disaster.

Murray doesn't have anyone in his pocket. It's just the nature of the mining industry. It isn't confined to this mine in Utah; it's all mines. Think about it. The number of mines being mined, has probably increased by an order of magnitude in the last 20 years. This has everything to do with the price of coal, which increased dramatically. Do we think the number of mine inspectors has increased by an order of magnitude, commensurate with the number of mining operations? Of course not. There's money to be made. MSHA personnel would have been, and still are, in a prime position to capitalize on job offers from larger mine operators. There are a lot more mining jobs available for the workers, and usually areas where there are mines, are very poor areas, so operating mines are a boon for them.
