As soon as the US government threatened Canada and the Panama Canal, it was obvious that the US wants full control and authority over global trade routes and shipping lanes. The US wants to be the middle-man with global trade, to take a tax on all goods that move between borders.
The reason that the US wants Canada and Greenland is here (see illustration). The red route borders Russia, the green route borders Canada and Greenland. The blue route does not yet exist.
The US currently has no impactful authority or significant border in the Arctic region. The US is threatened because other countries, such as Canada, can establish major trade routes East and West that bypass the US. South America has already established trade routes that bypass the US (e.g.: China via Peru shipping ports).
Although the US appears to be bankrupt and unable to purchase natural resources from sovereign countries, such as Greenland and Venezuela, that is not primary reason for the US attempting to seize sovereign nations. The primary reason appears to be control of global trade routes.
Venezuela is the point of access from the US to South America, Greenland is the centre of trade from Canada to all points East. The US needs Greenland to be a major player in the Arctic region.
The US recognizes that other countries can and will bypass US trade relationships (due to tariff taxes). The only way for the US to remain relevant is to so seize strategically located sovereign nations, to control trade routes, to impose transport tax ... and the bonus is that the US can steal, rather than purchase, natural resources from sovereign nations.
