US threatens to annex Greenland - 2025/2026

COPENHAGEN: Large demonstrations are planned across Denmark and Greenland on Saturday (Jan 17) to protest against United States President Donald Trump's designs to take over the Arctic island.

Thousands of people have indicated on social media that they intend to take part in marches and rallies organised by Greenlandic associations in Copenhagen, Aarhus, Aalborg, Odense and the Greenlandic capital Nuuk.

Uagut, along with the citizens' movement "Hands off Greenland", and Inuit - an umbrella group of Greenlandic associations - were staging the demonstrations to coincide with a visit to Copenhagen by a bipartisan delegation of US lawmakers.

Danish officials told U.S. lawmakers this week to avoid a war powers vote on Greenland unless it could pass overwhelmingly, warning that a narrow or partisan outcome could do more harm than good....

A weak showing that included little Republican support, the Danes believe, could undercut Copenhagen’s position and bolster President Donald Trump’s drive to acquire the Danish territory through any means possible.

And on that the Danes are correct. Mr Trump can just veto a war powers resolution, so congress should only go ahead if there's two thirds of both houses in favour. Otherwise, all they'll have done is rile Mr Trump, and who knows what he'll do then.

First Canada should be part of the united states, then Greenland, now Iceland. It's a joke in the united states, deeply offensive everywhere else. People who want to steal land and resources think it's funny, targets of that theft view it as rude, disrespectful and deeply offensive.

There appears to be a significant cultural difference between the United States and several other countries; an astounding arrogant, bullying stance of assumed superiority over sovereign countries. There appears to be no respect for other cultures, traditions, or ways of life, and a presumption that Canadian, Greenland and Icelandic people should be honoured when stripped of heritage and forced to live with reduced rights in the United States.

Greenland, Iceland and Canada are progressive countries with National Health Care programs. The reasoning behind this is the belief that society is stronger, more productive, and safer when each individual receives health care as a human right. This fundamental cultural difference between the United States and other countries cannot be overcome under any circumstances.

"Many Canadians didn't find it very funny when U.S. President Donald Trump repeatedly threatened to make Canada its 51st state.

And Trump's comments about taking control of Greenland, once considered a joke, are now a very real threat.

So when Trump's pick for U.S. ambassador to Iceland joked this week that the Nordic country should become the 52nd state — and that he should be its governor — it didn't exactly go down well.
...

Sigmar Guðmundsson, an Iceland MP, called on Foreign Minister Katrín Gunnarsdóttir to reject Former congressman William Long as ambassador, adding the U.S. should "nominate another person who shows Iceland and Icelanders more respect."
...

Reaction in the Icelandic capital, Reykjavík, was swift. As of Friday, nearly 5,000 people had signed the petition calling for Gunnarsdóttir to reject Long's nomination. Iceland has a population of about 400,000 people."

It's frustrating that many Americans participating on this thread are taking it seriously and don't approve, to read an insult that it's a joke to Americans.

<modsnip: Quoted post was removed> ... the ones who do think it’s a joke, id love to hear the justification (or punchline) to the US taking over a sovereign nation. I haven’t heard or seen one logical argument for it anywhere (in this thread or anywhere else) and I would actually like to see the other sides viewpoint of anyone who thinks it’s a good thing for us to do. I’m honestly asking because I see zero upside or joke in doing this. All MOO.

It might not be a joke today, but it was a joke in April 2025. Since then, the United States declared Economic War against Canada. The United States repeatedly threatens military war against Greenland. The United States has started threatening Iceland exactly as it started with Canada and Greenland: "it's a joke."

"The smile begins to form on Joseph Redmon's face, and there's even a little chuckle, at the first mention of Canada becoming the 51st state. "It's a joke," he says over and over.
...

"I just think it's funny when there's a lot of people with TDS, Trump derangement syndrome," she says, referring to the derogatory term used to describe negative reactions to Trump that are seen as irrational.
...

"Their heads explode, and I think it's funny when he says that kind of stuff and gets a rise out of them."

April 2025

"Many Canadians didn't find it very funny when U.S. President Donald Trump repeatedly threatened to make Canada its 51st state.

And Trump's comments about taking control of Greenland, once considered a joke, are now a very real threat."

Not American, but I think it's more that almost every time Trump makes some outlandish threat to annex this place or that place, Karoline Leavitt and her ilk come out and say he was just joking (initially at least -- they've clearly confirmed they're serious about Greenland). Or the putative US ambassador to Iceland claims his stupid, offensive comment to Icelanders was a joke. The Canada 51st state stuff is often also called a joke, and the implication is that Canadians have no sense of humour about this. I think many (most?) Americans don't think he is serious about Canada because it's so big and until recently a friendly neighbour but I believe Trump is serious (and deluded).

Many Trump voters/supporters don't take seriously every provocative thing he says and think he and his administration are just trying to annoy or 'own the libs' (as if owning the libs has any meaning or relevance to us outside the US) and they extend that thinking to these invasion threats. This is my interpretation of it anyway. Not that Americans in general think these threats to invade are a joke or not a serious issue.

  1. 'It's time for Denmark to give back,' says Trump
    16:40 Breaking

We can bring you more now from Donald Trump, who says on Truth Social that the US has subsidised Denmark and the European Union for many years by not charging them tariffs.

The president adds that after centuries "it’s time for Denmark to give back".

"World Peace is at stake! China want Greenland, and there is not a thing Denmark can do about it," Trump says and claims Greenland is only protected by two dogsleds.

He goes on to say that Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the UK the Netherlands and Finland "have journeyed to Greenland for purposes unknown” are playing a "very dangerous game".

"Strong measures" must be taken so that this "potentially perilous situation end quickly and without question," Trump adds.

    16:33 Breaking

US President Donald Trump has announced a new set of tariffs for a swathe of countries that export goods to the US, beginning on 1 February.

Writing on social media, Trump says countries including Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland will be "charged a 10% tariff" on "all and any" goods sent to the US.

On 1 June, this will be increased to 25%, he writes on Truth Social.

False premises lead to false conclusions.

Several NATO countries are conducting NATO exercises around Greenland in response to US claims that Greenland is under threat from Russia and China.

The only threat against Canada, Greenland and Iceland is the United States.

"World Peace is at stake! China want Greenland, and there is not a thing Denmark can do about it," Trump says and claims Greenland is only protected by two dogsleds.

At this point, I want Starmer to grow a backbone and tell Trump that unless he drops this nonsense he can say goodbye to this little lot -

We should know from history that you can't appease people like Trump. You have to stand up to them.

“Time for Denmark to give back?” For what, exactly? What Trump is saying makes no sense, at least to me. Yes, “world peace is at stake”, mostly due to him and his sycophants. And yet he has a Nobel Peace Prize” in his possession. Give me a break.

JMO, IMO, MOO.

World peace is only at stake if the United States chooses to attack a NATO country. China and Russia will not participate in that world war, but they will be the victors.

Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Finland are fulfilling their NATO obligations of Article 2 and Article 5.

What will it take for the United States government to react?

What the United States government is doing is completely crazy.
  1. the US government declares that a NATO country is at risk from China and Russia
  2. the US government declares that they must annex the NATO country of Greenland to provide protection
  3. NATO responds with additional security
  4. the US government declares that they don't understand why NATO has responded with additional security
  5. the US government imposes tariffs on NATO countries providing security to a NATO country
Is the United States a democratic, or autocratic, government? Is this a reflection of all elected government officials? If not, why not?

  • #320
The US government has imposed a 10% tariff on several NATO countries because they are participating in NATO exercises in the Arctic.

Where is the rest of the US government, and are they able to see how ridiculous this is? Does the US government have the courage to stand up, or will they remain silent to protect their salaries?

"US President Trump has imposed a 10 percent import tariff on all goods in the Netherlands and other European countries. He announced this on his social media platform, Truth Social . Besides the Netherlands, the tariffs include Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, and Finland.

Trump says he's introducing this measure because these countries are participating in a reconnaissance mission in Greenland, which serves as preparation for a NATO exercise.
