COPENHAGEN: Large demonstrations are planned across Denmark and Greenland on Saturday (Jan 17) to protest against United States President Donald Trump's designs to take over the Arctic island.

Thousands of people have indicated on social media that they intend to take part in marches and rallies organised by Greenlandic associations in Copenhagen, Aarhus, Aalborg, Odense and the Greenlandic capital Nuuk.

Uagut, along with the citizens' movement "Hands off Greenland", and Inuit - an umbrella group of Greenlandic associations - were staging the demonstrations to coincide with a visit to Copenhagen by a bipartisan delegation of US lawmakers.

"The aim is to send a clear and unified message of respect for Greenland's democracy and fundamental human rights," said Uagut, an association of Greenlanders in Denmark.

First Canada should be part of the united states, then Greenland, now Iceland. It's a joke in the united states, deeply offensive everywhere else. People who want to steal land and resources think it's funny, targets of that theft view it as rude, disrespectful and deeply offensive.

There appears to be a significant cultural difference between the United States and several other countries; an astounding arrogant, bullying stance of assumed superiority over sovereign countries. There appears to be no respect for other cultures, traditions, or ways of life, and a presumption that Canadian, Greenland and Icelandic people should be honoured when stripped of heritage and forced to live with reduced rights in the United States.

Greenland, Iceland and Canada are progressive countries with National Health Care programs. The reasoning behind this is the belief that society is stronger, more productive, and safer when each individual receives health care as a human right. This fundamental cultural difference between the United States and other countries cannot be overcome under any circumstances.

It might not be a joke today, but it was a joke in April 2025. Since then, the United States declared Economic War against Canada. The United States repeatedly threatens military war against Greenland. The United States has started threatening Iceland exactly as it started with Canada and Greenland: "it's a joke."

Not American, but I think it's more that almost every time Trump makes some outlandish threat to annex this place or that place, Karoline Leavitt and her ilk come out and say he was just joking (initially at least -- they've clearly confirmed they're serious about Greenland). Or the putative US ambassador to Iceland claims his stupid, offensive comment to Icelanders was a joke. The Canada 51st state stuff is often also called a joke, and the implication is that Canadians have no sense of humour about this. I think many (most?) Americans don't think he is serious about Canada because it's so big and until recently a friendly neighbour but I believe Trump is serious (and deluded).

Many Trump voters/supporters don't take seriously every provocative thing he says and think he and his administration are just trying to annoy or 'own the libs' (as if owning the libs has any meaning or relevance to us outside the US) and they extend that thinking to these invasion threats. This is my interpretation of it anyway. Not that Americans in general think these threats to invade are a joke or not a serious issue.

What the United States government is doing is completely crazy.

1. the US government declares that a NATO country is at risk from China and Russia
2. the US government declares that they must annex the NATO country of Greenland to provide protection
3. NATO responds with additional security
4. the US government declares that they don't understand why NATO has responded with additional security
5. the US government imposes tariffs on NATO countries providing security to a NATO country

Is the United States a democratic, or autocratic, government? Is this a reflection of all elected government officials? If not, why not?
