US threatens to annex Greenland - 2025/2026

From the same Guardian live coverage as previously posted there is this report of the Financial Times interview with Anders Fogh Rasmussen (behind a paywall). I think he's right.

1h ago16.23 GMT
Donald Trump is using Greenland “as a weapon of mass distraction from the real threats” such as Russia’s war in Ukraine, the former head of Nato has said.

Anders Fogh Rasmussen, who also served as Denmark’s prime minister from 2001 to 2009, told the Financial Times:

I am actually concerned that the world’s attention is now focused on something that does not represent a threat, neither to Europe nor to the United States — namely Greenland, a friendly ally of the United States — instead of focusing on what should be the focal point right now: namely, how can we force Putin to the negotiation table in Ukraine?
Rasmussen said he has “considered the United States as the natural leader of the free world” since his childhood.

“I’ve even spoken about the US as the world’s policeman,” he added. “Now we see the United States use a language that’s pretty close to the gangsters that they should control in Moscow, Beijing, etc.”

What the United States government is doing is completely crazy.
  1. the US government declares that a NATO country is at risk from China and Russia
  2. the US government declares that they must annex the NATO country of Greenland to provide protection
  3. NATO responds with additional security
  4. the US government declares that they don't understand why NATO has responded with additional security
  5. the US government imposes tariffs on NATO countries providing security to a NATO country
Is the United States a democratic, or autocratic, government? Is this a reflection of all elected government officials? If not, why not?
I think that the States are currently an autocratic government akin to a dictatorship. Unfortunately, the Democrats (and even some Republicans who are resisting the tyrant) are in a bad spot because there are so many Trump supporters who rubber stamp everything that Trump does. This is why the mid-term elections are so important unless, of course, Trump does away with them (and I wouldn’t put it past him).

JMO, speculation, IMO, and MOO.

That's what happened in Canada too ... patriotic overdrive.

"Copenhagen professor Rasmussen said any discussion of whether holding on to Greenland is worth the cost has been drowned out by outrage at Trump's threats.

"It is not part of the political debate in Denmark. I fear we have gone into patriotic overdrive," he said."

I would like to know who wrote this coherent post. This is not how Donald Trump speaks or writes. I don't believe that a man who speaks in phrases with numerous random tangents can write this.

My guess would be PeeWee German. IMO
Good article. Thanks for sharing.

I think so too, but no one really wants to say it aloud.

Since Trump was elected, the message has been the same: do nothing, let Trump do what he wants, wait until the midterms. Does anyone believe that an increasingly autocratic government is going to allow midterm elections to interfere with their quest for global power?

Waiting for midterm elections is how we arrived where we are today. No one in the United States had the courage to protect their former quality of life, so now the United States has turned that unleashed authoritative quest for power on sovereign countries. It is now the responsibility of NATO countries to stop a US government that no one within the US has stopped.

~ in my humble opinion ~

It is 100% not a joke to most Americans. And the ones who do think it’s a joke, id love to hear the justification (or punchline) to the US taking over a sovereign nation. I haven’t heard or seen one logical argument for it anywhere (in this thread or anywhere else) and I would actually like to see the other sides viewpoint of anyone who thinks it’s a good thing for us to do. I’m honestly asking because I see zero upside or joke in doing this. All MOO.
The Americans who support this are the same ones who have reneged on supporting Ukraine. It's pathetic and shameful. The US was in the forefront after WWII supporting and protecting the sovereignty of all nations, regardless of size or resources. Our fathers and grandfathers are rolling in their graves, our moms and grandmas too. It makes me sick.

on my local news i read an interview with a student from greenland who lives in my city (amsterdam). i thought it was interesting to read her perspective! there’s more background information in the article

“I find it frightening,” says Upaluk from Greenland. “Especially because Trump first talked about buying Greenland, and now he says he wants it no matter how.” Upaluk is twenty years old and comes from the capital Nuuk.

Upaluk and her family have been feeling more uneasy and uncomfortable lately. “Especially now that he has said he would take Greenland by force if necessary. I recently spoke to my mother on the phone and she is also having trouble sleeping because of this, and older family members in particular are worried.”

“We were once colonized by Denmark, and that has left deep scars. That's why it affects the elderly even more.” When she is at home, she often talks to her great-grandparents, who tell her little by little about how things used to be. “It has had a particularly mental impact. We have lost much of our identity, culture, and religion.”

A few days after a meeting between the US and Denmark on the issue, Upaluk is frustrated by the attitude of many Danes.“Some people use this current situation to justify the colonization of Greenland, or even to want to maintain it. I would prefer to see us become independent from the Danes at some point. And I don't want anything to do with the US. Greenland is our country.”

The US government will imposing increasing tariffs on NATO countries until they agree to give the United States one of the NATO countries, and to give the entire Indigenous population of that country to the United States.

"The United States will impose increasing tariffs on several European countries until the U.S. is able to purchase Greenland, President Donald Trump announced on his Truth Social platform on Saturday.

According to the post, 10 per cent tariffs targeting Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, Great Britain, the Netherlands and Finland will come into effect on Feb. 1. The tariffs will then increase to 25 per cent on June 1, Trump said, and won't abate unless the U.S. gets the strategic Arctic island.

You are absolutely correct. There is no way that mf'@r can spell remuneration let alone use it in a sentence.
Exactly - so who is behind the curtain posting comments under the name of the president of the United States?

These days I wish that my great-grandparents had stayed in Poland, Germany and Ireland.

I believe that neocolonialism under the United States will be far worse, that the environment will be permanently destroyed during the extraction of natural resource wealth, and the population will be permanently displaced.

In my opinion, NATO must not allow the United States to seize Greenland, as it means the destruction of an important Indigenous cultural, historical, and environmental treasure.

i agree with you! i hope one day greenland can be independent from denmark too, but it seems like that’s been only pushed further into the future now and being taken over by the US would be the worst option.

IMO he is trying to do as much damage as he can before Nov. when his horrific game will be over.

I think that Greenland was ready for full independence, and then Trump started making threats. It is postponed, but I agree that it is the future of Greenland.

The US government comes across as ridiculous when they impose tariffs today based on an operation that was planned and initiated last year. Operation Arctic Endurance has nothing to do with the united states, yet the US reacts as though foreign military exercises in the Arctic are 100% related to the united states.

The united states government is Egotistical.

"In the wake of the increased focus on security in the Arctic and North Atlantic Area, the Danish Defence has decided to continue its increased military activities in and around Greenland by deploying additional capacities and troops in addition to comprehensive investments.

The Danish-led training activities falls under the initiative Operation Arctic Endurance, which aims to demonstrate enhanced military presence in and around Greenland and the Faroe Islands. Arctic Endurance is under rapid development and contains both national and multinational activities within NATO.

Our Alliance is the cornerstone for security in the Arctic region, and it is in our common interest to further strengthen cooperation to ensure that NATO remains fit for the purpose to deter and defend every inch of Allied territory. By bolstering the Alliance’s effort in the Arctic, we are strengthening the whole of NATO.
...

In the summer of 2025, the Danish Armed Forces strengthened its presence and exercise activity in and around Greenland with a number of initiatives and capabilities, including with force contributions from allies such as Germany, France, Sweden, and Norway. The initiatives included deployments at sea, on land, and in the air, as well as exercises related to the protection of critical infrastructure."
