Re Trump's Greenland statement, it's alarming to me how everyone is taking his word on this:

“people thought I would use force. I don’t have to use force. I don’t want to use force. I won’t use force"

He's a proven liar. He lies all the time. You can't believe a word he says.

I don't think anyone who pays attention to the US government believes anything that is said by the US government anymore.

According to the US government today, the US was a country in the year 1500 and sent boats to Greenland - therefore the US should own Greenland.

The US government has repeatedly stated that if the Greenland people and their land cannot be sold to the United States, then the US will use military force to steal Greenland from the people of Greenland.

The US government had a compete meltdown over the weekend when NATO launched Arctic training missions around Greenland - reacting by imposing tariffs on 8 NATO countries that participated in the pre-planned NATO mission. The US was aware of the mission for months, but reacted nevertheless as though a NATO training mission was a military threat against the US.

It's a fickle situation.

Trump was met with loud applause as he took the stage for what many billed as the most closely watched speech of this year’s Davos....

He also directed a number of comments at Carney. A CEO seated nearby told me, on condition of anonymity, that Carney took it in good humor, smiling and nodding along....

“Would you like me to talk about Greenland?” he asked, drawing a loud “yeah!” from the audience. Around me, some attendees shook their heads. One person seated behind me, who said they were Danish, muttered: “This is ridiculous.”

“I am seeking immediate negotiations to once again discuss the acquisition of Greenland by the United States,” Trump said.

The room fell noticeably quieter. “This is scary,” one attendee in front of me said, exchanging uneasy glances with others....

The address was followed by a fireside chat with WEF President Børge Brende, but by then — after well over an hour — some of the audience had begun to drift out.

The US government does not recognize the people of Greenland at all. They are looking at the last 500 years of history as justification to declare ownership, and do not recognize the rights of the Indigenous People lived on the Island for centuries beforehand.

Mark Carney certainly stood up to the US today at Davos, and he encouraged everyone in the room to stand up with him. He mentioned NATO Article 5 and solidarity in the defence of the Kingdom of Denmark and Greenland.

If only the people in the US would stand up to their government! Please tell the US government that the US was not a country 500 years ago, so there were no US boats in Greenland. Someone else can tell the US government that NATO was formed to protect the Arctic Region, and it doesn't make sense for one NATO country to declare that they can provide better security alone.

Mark's message is important: the world has changed, there's no reason to be nostalgia. Instead, see the world for what it is today, and build a better, safer, more prosperous future together.

I'm so glad we have Mark as primeminister.soooo glad we didn't end up with PP. I feel awful for Greenlanders being treated like this. Hopefully one day they will stand up to that man and end alot of this conflict before it's to late.

there's something about trump more non-americans should understand. as scary as he sounds sometimes, he is easily placated. all you have to do is give him "concessions" he already has. this works because he has a head full of uninformed narratives about "america getting screwed!" in various ways. this creates ample opportunities to "bend to his will" and let him declare victory and go away by just agreeing to do what you were already doing.

in this case, the "concession" was probably to allow the US to have military bases in greenland, which worked because he didn't know we already have them. or something like that. ... another way it could have ended is germany agreeing to buy american tanks. or macron agreeing to let american tourists visit paris. trump would have come back boasting about the bigly awesome new victory he won for us that no other american president was ever able to achieve, not obama, not lincoln, not even christopher columbus.
