US threatens to annex Greenland - 2025/2026

I sense that calling off the tariffs has more to do with this ... rather than Greenland.

Markets rebound as Trump calls off tariffs on European allies over Greenland

Stocks jumped on Wednesday, soon after the president announced that he would scrap tariffs on European allies after establishing the “framework of a future deal” on Greenland.

My feeling this afternoon is that the leaders from around the world are not going to stand up to him, but are perfectly happy to pretend to be offended and then.....go along with him.

Glad to avert a trade war, though.

It is possible that there may be a "cold war" if he takes over Greenland. The EU has an enormous amount of people - limiting their ability to purchase US items may cause the US some pain.

Is there a WS thread for Ukraine? I seem to recall one, back when the invasion first happened.

Not for quite a long time. It got too heated for the mods to deal with.

Already praising himself and his Davos speech.

“We had a good speech, we got great reviews. I can’t believe it, we got good reviews on that speech,” Trump said on Wednesday...“Usually they say ‘he’s a horrible dictator-type person,’ I’m a dictator,” Trump continued. “But sometimes you need a dictator! But they didn’t say that in this case.... It’s all based on common sense, it’s not conservative or liberal, or anything else.”

This kind of talk—which Trump has all but normalized—sheds further light on his aggressive, antagonistic approach to diplomacy, especially after spending the morning threatening Europe, Canada, Greenland, and, bizarrely, Iceland.

Trump declared that he is a dictator, because sometimes you need a dictator?
Is that another "joke" from the US president?

Annexing Canada was a joke, until it wasn't.
Annexing Greenland was a joke, until it wasn't.
Annexing Iceland is mis-speak?

I think that Iceland should take that as fair warning that the US is coming after Iceland next.
We didn't even know about Iceland until the orange idiot started saying it accidentally.

Wisely so.

But I'm remembering the presser where he went hard against Tylenol after he messed up the word acetaminophen. (The presser with RFKjr about autism.) It was easier to just to Tylenol. I am wondering if he said Iceland today because he got Iceland and Greenland mixed up and he tried to cover by calling Greenland a piece of ice.

Ridiculous to give this much thought to it, tbh.

I don't think so. If he was looking for a country that ends in "land", why not Finland, England, Russland? Instead, he's talking about the Island next to Greenland because that Island was perhaps discussed during that flight.
Yes, but in that post I was speculating how his speech will be explained away and not addressed by CONGRESS, in response to a post about Congress, not that I personally agree with any excuses.

Or... Europe just dumps all US Treasury bonds ($8 trillion) and the dollar tanks, our economy tanks and we enter another depression. But I would hope that tRump pulls a taco before that happens & spins it as some sort of win.

President Trump says he has the framework of a deal on Greenland and won’t be imposing the tariffs he threatened.

Trump: "Based upon a very productive meeting that I have had with the Secretary General of NATO, Mark Rutte, we have formed the framework of a future deal with respect to Greenland and, in fact, the entire Arctic Region. This solution, if consummated, will be a great one for the United States of America, and all NATO Nations. Based upon this understanding, I will not be imposing the Tariffs that were scheduled to go into effect on February 1st. Additional discussions are being held concerning The Golden Dome as it pertains to Greenland. Further information will be made available as discussions progress. Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, and various others, as needed, will be responsible for the negotiations — They will report directly to me. Thank you for your attention to this matter!"

That doesn't make any sense. The "golden dome" is not real. It's a hope that at some time in the future the existing Iron Dome (with a detection range from launch is 45 miles) will have a longer detection range.

Canada is not yet interested in investing in the dome project, and has instead made arrangement with Australia for long range missile detection. Why is Trump announcing that Greenland will purchase, or cooperate, with the dome? Did Rutte suggest that NATO will invest in the US dome project for future implementation in Greenland?

The US wants billions to develop and build the project.

Any thoughts on what Mark Rutte said to Trump to trigger Trump's declaration about that there is something in the works with Greenland and Trump's dome?

"Canada will need to pay US$71 billion to be included in the Golden Dome defence system, U.S. President Donald Trump revealed."

That's not a deal, that's how it has been since NATO was formed ... an infinite deal until one NATO country attacks another NATO country.

"The NATO countries will "jointly" defend Greenland and the Arctic. This is the focus of the discussions that the United States and Denmark are now about to begin.

NATO chief Mark Rutte clarified this after US President Donald Trump mentioned a framework for "a future agreement regarding Greenland".

Trump and the NATO Secretary General discussed the dispute that had erupted between the US and Denmark over Greenland at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland. A satisfied Trump stated afterward that talks are now underway, which should lead to a deal on the island. "

This is how NYC Mob bosses talk. Those are his role models in diplomacy.
Abusive spouses also use this technique.

Nothing is scarier than someone who keeps talking about the force they have at their disposal, and then sets up to discredit the target of that force when they attempt to gather support and safety by saying, "I said I wasn't going to use that force!"

he made the case for a U.S. acquisition of Greenland, Trump said he needs the Danish territory for his proposed "golden dome,"
Unfortunately, Greenlanders often seemed left out of the public and political discourse when it comes to the future of their own country. It is their land, their territory and it should ultimately be their decision. For example, he stated today he needs Greenland to actualize his dreams for the golden dome as though his fantasies would ever or should ever take priority over the rights and wishes of the native 56,000 Greenlandic people or entitles him to violate Greenland’s sovereignty. His dreams and desires are not their problem and they have made it quite clear they are not interested in becoming part of the United States of America, according to ABC News. In other words, he doesn’t need the golden dome but he does he need accept that the people of Greenland said no.

I am seeking immediate negotiations to once again discuss the acquisition of Greenland by the United States,” Trump said
According to Aljazeer, the people of Greenland have already rejected the idea of becoming part of America or the notion that it could or should be acquired either through force or being bought. So what more is there to discuss? No means no and we should respect the people of Greenland, their government and the fact that the right and power to determine fate of the country and land of Greenland as whole belongs to them and only them first.

Whatever his national security concerns and needs are there are far better ways to address and cope with them besides trying to undermine and take control of a sovereign state

Greenland is an island covered by a sheet of ice but even so even it was just “a piece of ice” then why is he so obsessed with it? If a piece of ice with a flare for starting drama is all he is really looking for can’t he just purchase the iceberg that sank the Titanic so that we can all move on?

Also for a country he has seeming been obsessed over and claims absolutely needs to be annexed to US, even at the expense of breaking with NATO and the consideration of the use of military force to claim dominion over, due to national security concerns it is startling he seemingly can’t even really remember its name or repeatedly confuses it with and refers to it as Iceland. How essential can it really be to acquire if his memory just whittles it down to a big piece of ice in his head?

And sometimes Trump reminds us that not everyone is meant to be a leader and the type qualities you do and do not want to find in someone dictating the future of America or the county you call home.

hopefully he understands that in Iceland if you are disinvited to the dog sled race, they really do not like your approach

I was referring to the envoy (Landry) from Louisiana who was heading to Greenland for the dog race but was disinvited. When you mentioned "envoy," that who I thought of. The ambassador to Iceland is another jokester not serious about the job.

And, yes, I hope he realizes a dis-invite is a dis.
