Welcome cdn :):):)
Pleased you are posting here now.
You certainly are fortunate, that you have moved on from your traumatic past, unlike poor Lizzie.
Hope your future, is an upward spiral in life.
Thanks, ongoing therapy and supervision for my own work is what keeps me from geeking out completely.

The photo used in her obit is my favorite-- the larger one appeared early during the investigation. It appears to be taken at a family restaurant that gives kids a crayon packet, and she seems overjoyed at that moment. Drawing rainbows...:)

It is a lovely picture of a beautiful child. She does look very happy in it.

A rainbow for Lizzy--

If that was his motive, then why remove her skirt? IMO he did more than just stab her. Maybe that motive is right but it’s missing the SA piece which makes him a predator and that much more repulsive.

I suppose because any number of terrible things he did were additional ways to release his rage and hurt other people. Won't it hurt more if we learn Lizzy was SA'd? It will hurt her mother, her boyfriend and her entire family more, too, imo... and he would know that. SA is more about power than sex. He walked out of that house that night with all the power and control over everyone. But, I think whatever he did to Lizzy he wanted to do to his sister for her behavior as she "shut him out".... and he couldn't do that... so he did it to the child she loved instead. So, personally, without further information, I'm not convinced he's a pedophile.

I'm not sure if Lizzy's family is Mormon, but if so they usually follow the same process. Open casket viewing the night before where family can display pictures and knick knacks from the person. Day of another open casket viewing with a family prayer, followed by the closing of the casket (very dramatic IMO). Carry it off to the sacrament room where they play music, have the obituary read, and a religious speech by the bishop. Then the casket is buried.
I've been to both Mormon and non-Mormon funerals in Utah, and they have always followed this process. It's just a cultural thing despite there being religious roots. Although this is a child who was brutally murdered, and not someone who died of old age, so I'm not sure how that would change things.
All MOO and not necessarily fact.
Edit: And yes, the food is amazing, especially funeral potatoes. As much as I despise the gossiping and pretentious nature among the Relief Society ladies, they're amazing at cooking :)
Thanks for explaining the Utah culture surrounding death. I can't help but think they may have to omit the "open casket" as Lizzy was reportedly exposed/partially buried for 5 days. Perhaps I'm wrong? I guess we will know soon enough. MOO

This made me cry. Everything about this case does.

I really like that in lieu of flowers they're asking that people donate to the Logan Public Library.

So cool. It was apparently her favorite place!!

I think this is pretty much American culture. The only difference (for the vast majority) is what we call it regionally. In these parts, many still call the viewing “visitation.” The meal after the funeral is very often supplied by a local church even if the person was not religious.

Quite honestly I believe he’s a monster unlike one we’ve seen. The sexualized comments he made about the couple before he did his thing proves (to me) that’s on his mind a lot. It’s scary to even think that someone like this was out there like a ticking time bomb. How many more are? :::shivers:::

My first posting, like others I joined WS after reading about this case in the news over the weekend.

I know people have thrown around a number of ideas re motive. Forgive me if someone else already mentioned this and I missed it. I would wonder if he was exposed to adult sexual activity throughout his unstable childhood. This is CSA though many who’ve been so exposed don’t realize it is incestuous for parents/guardians to have sexual contact in front of or in earshot of children. The sister getting frisky is no excuse for murder yet it may have brought forth an enraged, neglected ego state from his childhood. Substances could facilitate switching.
Another thought is whether his mom was a better grandma to Lizzy than mom to him, he was still a teen when she was born. That may have seeded resentment and rivalry.
Just my thoughts on this.
Interesting and thought-provoking post. Could be -- especially him thinking about the mom/grandmom's treatment of him vs. Lizzy. He may have -- and probably did -- see it several times, and something said while he was there just really sent him over the top -- but not insanity, just rage and wanting to hurt somebody.
Certainly we all know that a reason is not an excuse, but you may be onto something...

Interesting, isn't it?
I guess his grandfather realized there was no reason to argue and say, "he couldn't have done it," etc. He realized that the evidence was too overwhelming, and he also knew his grandson.

And this --

I read this from a MSM twitter - that they'd determined but were not releasing COD at this time. Can't recall the name of the source though.

PS - my first post here. I've been following this thread since the day of this heinous crime; I was born and raised in Logan and appreciate finding this source of information to help frame things as the search was ongoing. It's truly been the only news in our valley all week and been so unsettling. A lot of local sources were not as quick nor as accurate as this aggregation. Thanks to all of you!
Thanks for the post -- and it's always nice to have local sleuthers with us as things go along.

Welcome to Websleuths,

Unfamiliar with acronym BBM:rolleyes: (noob around here)
Hoping no offense taken, I intended this as a parallel to my own preoccupation to the case and frankly to my career where I steep in the many ways humans traumatize one another. I see my defenses at work. My mother’s (and my own) fondness for intellectualization lends a breath of distance between human suffering and the emotions said suffering evokes.

BBM = Bolded By Me - using the "B" key above for emphasis.

I think AW is always angry. I think he likes feeling angry because at least he feels "something" when he's angry.
>>>>> respectfully snipped by me to save space<<<<<
Very good post, pepper -- thanks for your insights. Makes good sense to me.

AW is really one of the most disorganized killers we have ever seen. I believe that he thought he wanted to kill someone, or SA, and Lizzie was right there in his drugged out drunk haze. But then, when he actually did the crime, I don't think he could SA, and that is when he killed her.

I do believe that the next day, he wished it was all a bad dream. It was an impulsive act, not planned or premeditated. He didn't flee, hide, just pretend like life was normal, still wearing bloody clothes. I am sure that he blames everyone else for the entire mess. All their fault.

This is a really interesting take on the subject. I'm still not completely decided on whether it was premeditated or a spur of the moment killing, but it would have happened eventually to someone (SA or murder) based on his mental state. For some reason in my mind it hurts more to think that Lizzy was just a little girl who was somewhere at the wrong time, and that she was randomly the subject of his rage. Because if it was premeditated, then someone could have possibly stopped him, even though I know realistically that isn't true. It hurts so much to see another little girl taken from this earth brutally by a sick man.
I'll be interested to see how the case progresses, and especially if he pleads guilty/not guilty. I honestly expect him to plea not guilty, but I was wrong in that mindset with Jake Patterson, so who knows...

Rainbows for Lizzy: Ribbons among many tributes under way for Elizabeth Shelley

Families Feeding Families founder Jaymee Kay Loftin Avery said after the group started coordinating the project, the Cache County Children's Justice Center and the Victim's Advocates Office approached them to ask if they could provide the rainbow decorations for Lizzy's funeral on Tuesday.

The ribbons will decorate the funeral route, the vehicles, the motorcycle procession and hundreds of the first responders expected to attend, according to Avery. Many of those first responders participated in the five-day search for the missing girl.

Avery said one of Lizzy's teachers told her that when asked her favorite color, the girl said: "I like all of them. I don’t like any more better than the rest. So my favorite color is rainbow."

"So we're going to do as much rainbow as we can," Labrum said.

Lizzy's obituary running in the Weekend Edition of The Herald Journal confirmed her love of rainbows.

"She always dreamed of growing wings and flying to her own special rainbow," the family wrote.
[...]
A candlelight vigil for Lizzy, approved by the family, has been planned for 8 p.m. Saturday at the Historic Cache County Courthouse grounds. A vigil was originally proposed for the same time on the sidewalks along the family's block, but after concerns were raised for the family's privacy it was moved.

The steps of Lizzy's house are covered with stuffed animals and other items memorializing the girl. Television news crews, hoping to interview people who could give voice to the community's grief, watched the home for hours the day after police found her body.

The family has announced a public viewing from 6-8 p.m. Monday at Nyman Funeral Home in Providence, which the community is invited to attend. The funeral will be Tuesday.

It's pretty horrible hearing the 911 call and going from concern about where they were, to this horror.

The step-dad sounded worried but I don't think they could have begun to fathom what the outcome would be.

It makes me sick to think of what they went through once that monster was found with evidence and evasivesness but without Lizzy.

Aww. Little baby. She is an exquisitely beautiful child with one of the sweetest smiles I've seen in a while.

I don't know how her mom will be able to survive it. Ugh. And she has to live for the younger child but that baby's life is forever changed as well. The veil of grief will affect her whole childhood.

I can't say all that I want to say. I'm sick.

Little Lizzie was asleep in her bed and taken by a monster. This has to be one of the most horrifying cases I’ve followed, and I’ve followed a lot. Senseless, horrific, a complete betrayal, shock, disgust, the worst.

I believe there is a special place in heaven for little Lizzie. We can never fully comprehend this tragedy, Rest In Peace little love.

Tonight, Lizzy Shelley’s family told the crowd gathered for a vigil to “Live like Lizzy”. Story to come on @KSL5TV at 10.
