GUILTY UT - Boy, 12, found starved, weighs 30 lbs, Toquerville, 6 Jan 2017

Why? That is all I can say. Why.
I need to curl up in a ball and stay hidden from the world. Makes no sense that any child should starve in North America let alone on purpose. Whyyyyy???!!!

I looked at moms FB pages, she has 2 and I found dads FB page. Through Find a Grave, there were 2 children listed in 2007. In 2009 there were 3 children listed. On dad's FB there appeared to be boy/girl twins born in 2010. The male child has oxygen in his nose in pixs from 2-5-10
Mother was arrested for cocaine in August 2012

Those dates are when he joined FB, the twins, the boy was the victim, so his twin who is 12 is the other child. Then was a child born after that, a male. So the 2 children listed in the obit from 2007 are the twins, with another child born between 2007 and 2009
Knowing this was a twin who was the victim, is even worse. I mean what did the mother do to the other 12 yr old to make her not say anything? Twins have such a bond, I imagine this will be hard on her. News says the other 2 children were released to relatives, but where were all the relatives all the time this was going on?

He said he is frequently asked about the father’s suspected role in the case.

“It’s the same question that everybody on the street has asked me and every single reporter has asked, is like people want to know how did he not know.” Crouse said. “That’s part of the investigation. We need to reiterate the fact that this investigation is not closed. It is very much dynamic and ongoing at this point. We’re continuing to investigate all leads and witnesses to try to determine the circumstances which led up to that boy’s condition.”

Scapegoating of this child? Different father than siblings perhaps? Something caused this awful woman to single this poor child out for horrendous abuse.
.
I wonder if this child closely resembled his father, and/or had mannerisms, or a personality, similar to his father?

News reports say neighbors knew of the mother, father and 2 children in the home. They did not know their was a 3rd child
So what made the dad take the child in now? If he was in the home, he is as guilty as the "mother" Those other children must have thought if they told, they would be treated the same way.
I hope they get some mental health treatment and are placed with people who will care for them.
The news states the other 2 children were placed with family members, but I would sure wonder where they were over a year when all this was happening?

The boy's father found him in the mother's house Friday night in the small southeastern Utah city of Toquerville near the state line with Arizona, Washington County Sheriff's Office Lieutenant David Crouse said on Tuesday.

http://www.nzherald.co.nz/world/news/article.cfm?c_id=2&objectid=11783040

Most articles seem to indicate that the father (who does not reside with the mother and children) found teh boy, took him to the hospital, police were called, father described circumstances boy found in, police went and looked and found things as described by father in the household.

So are the reports of a father in the home describing a step father? Or are they simply inaccurate? Has the father not seen his children during the up to two years this boy was kept in the locked room? Talked to them on the phone? How did he come to be there after a seeming long absence on that particular day? So many questions remain.

Police began an investigation on Sunday after the child's father, who is separated from Jaynes, discovered his son locked in the bathroom of Jaynes' home. He took the child, who was "so malnourished he could not stand," to the hospital, KSTU reported.
The child was brought to the hospital by his father, where he will likely remain for the next three weeks. The father is said to be married to Jaynes but separated.

Detectives were also trying to figure out the situation with the father. Crouse said he and Jaynes were married but separated. He did not know Tuesday whether the father lived in the house or the last time he saw his son prior to Sunday.

Crouse said he was not aware of any special needs the boy had prior to his abuse, but that was still being investigated.

Neighbor, John Hammer, said he only saw the mother, father and 2 children in the home. He has given a ride to the 2 children from the bus stop to their home.
Some said father was in the home.
Others say they were separated, unknown for how long.

They may have thought the man was the father. Could have been a bf. There are mothers who keep children from fathers. My understanding was that the father found the child. The reports seem to be conflicting at this stage though.

That poor boy :(

I hope they release some more information after she appears in court or after they conclude their investigation.
True they may have just assumed the man was the father, or the 2 children could have said it was their dad. We don't know for sure
My 5 yr old twin granddaughters weigh more than that poor boy

She appeared in court today. Her defense attorney states the father was aware of the situation. She took child out of school 3 years ago when in 3rd grade.
Child is special needs, attorneys states probably autistic but has never been tested.

Only thing I've found....

March article:
Mother in 'horrific' child abuse case gets more charges
http://www.knoxnews.com/story/news/...-child-abuse-case-gets-more-charges/99424994/
State prosecutors have added two additional charges against the Toquerville woman who allegedly locked her son in a bathroom and starved him.
The additional charges are the same as the initial charge Brandy Kay Jaynes received upon her arrest early in January: aggravated, intentional child abuse — all of which are second-degree felonies.
[.....]
In addition to the malnutrition, Reddish-Day said the victim has suffered a protracted loss of use of his limbs, which led to the second amended charge. Developmental and intellectual delays the victim suffered while "in captivity" were the basis of the third charge, Reddish-Day said.
[.....]
New information in this case has the potential to impact the victim's father's case, Reddish-Day said. Russel Jaynes, 40, was charged with reckless child abuse, a third-degree felony, on Feb. 14. Court records indicate Russel Jaynes filed a petition for divorce shortly after Brandy Jaynes was arrested.
[.....]
Prosecutors have reason to believe the 12-year-old was locked in the bathroom for at least one year, Reddish-Day said.

Flint said Jaynes remains to live in the booking area of the Washington County Jail without a proper cell.

"She does get regular showers and meals, but she's still essentially in solitary confinement without her own cell because the jail says they have no other place they can put her," Flint said.

Jaynes was denied a reduction of her $20,000 cash-only bail in February. At that hearing, Flint alleged that Jaynes was living in "torturous" conditions at the jail.

Huh. The mother is living in torturous conditions. She gets daily showers and food, something her child didn't receive. I wonder how her attorney managed to get those words out of his mouth.

Attorney: Mother in shocking abuse case pleads guilty to spare children further pain

http://www.deseretnews.com/article/865685037/Attorney-Mother-in-shocking-abuse-case-pleads-guilty-to-spare-children-further-pain-video.html

Brandy K. Jaynes, 36, pleaded guilty to three counts of intentional child abuse causing serious injury, all second-degree felonies, with no deal offered from prosecutors and no reduction to the charges.

Each charge carries a potential sentence of one to 15 years in prison.

Russell Orin Jaynes, 40, the boy's father, is charged with child abuse, a third-degree felony. Prosecutors have called the father's actions "reckless" but have contended that Brandy Jaynes is the "primary defendant."

Russell Jaynes is due in court July 31 for what has been scheduled as a possible resolution hearing.

Sentencing is currently scheduled for August 28th.

http://www.thespectrum.com/story/news/2017/07/18/guilty-mother-admits-locking-son-bathroom-starving-him/487197001/

Deputy County Attorney Angie Reddish-Day said although the victim suffered extreme malnutrition, protracted loss of use of his limbs, and emotional and mental delays, the 12-year-old has gained a significant amount of weight and is "looking more filled out," particularly in his facial structure.

Reddish-Day described the victim as "resilient," having been receiving consistent medical care from therapists and physicians in addition to love and affection from a foster family ever since the abuse was discovered in January.
