The post on page one is the first one we've seen so you know as much as the rest of us. Since we don't know her name, I'm going to refer to her as the survivor instead of the woman who was raped or AA's victim. :) For now. Maybe someone else can come up with something better. MOO

Survivor would be the appropriate term and give her control of her story. Other terminology gives AA control still- which is not ok. (Long short: PommyMommy is correct!)

I'm curious about Monday. I wonder if we'll hear anything? I feel like local media is going to stay on this for a good bit of time so they're going to get all they can to report.

I just want it to move along fast. I have a friend(RIP Anne-Christine) that was brutally murdered by her ex husband(also our friend). He fully CONFESSED ("colorfully" I should add) when they found her in his garage 2 weeks after she went missing. He has been out on bond with an ankle tracker for almost the whole time since that day! Over 2 years now. I really hope Utah doesn't let something like that happen. These monsters deserve very little IMO

My point is I hope swift justice is served in this case. Rest in paradise Kenzie. You are a loss to our world.

Yes, I'm thinking she is the same person but I'm sure there could be others as well.
I wonder if we will hear her story today.

I would be interested to know what his attitude was towards her afterwards. The woman from the article said when she sent him a text telling him to leave her alone he sent back a rude message.

I'm wondering if he came across as intimidating, threatening, or if she would perceive him to have a quick temper, or a tendency to lose control and act violently in a rage.

From what we have learned about him, he seems to have a controlling and dominating personality.
I can definitely see him coming off as charming and shy in the beginning, he would know that this would be appealing. But I would think it would not take much for him to show his true colors, since he could get angry and act out over a piece of furniture being moved.

MO the upset about moved furniture is likely due to disturbing a camera angle. It sounds like he was getting increasingly controlling and obsessive.
Just a note.
Being controlling and obsessive are personality traits, common traits shared with millions of other people who do not make choices that lead to murder. Will not be a mitigating factor.

I believe there will be a hearing fairly soon to set a date for the preliminary hearing. No idea when, though.

I'm sorry for your loss. :(

At his first appearance, he will be read the charges against him and be informed of all of his rights - to counsel, to pretrial release, that he's not required to make a statement, the right to a prelim exam... Unless he waives his right to the prelim, it must be held within 14 days if he remains in custody. Otherwise, 28 days. That's if I understand what I've read correctly...IANAL.

True, but they are also common traits in someone with antisocial personality disorder, which is very common in these types of criminals.
Some have mentioned that he may have a narcissistic or psychopathic personality, and I think there is a good chance that this is true.
And, no, it would not be a mitigating factor, since none of those disorders would indicate that he does not know right from wrong.
Its only important in terms of research and statistics and in helping to better understand this type of criminal. Imo

Thank you for finding that! I do see a tiny loophole, though.

. . These time periods may be extended by the magistrate for good cause shown

So, I wonder if ‘good cause’ might be that they have mountains of forensic evidence to sort through, and more mountains of phone/computer data to analyze. The same principle as the 1-week extension they got on the arraignment.

I'm not seeing the loophole, tiny or otherwise.

AA was formally charged on Wednesday with the aggravated murder of Mackenzie.

DA Sim Gill previously asked a judge for an extension to formally charge AA, and it was granted.

(By law, a person can only be held 72 hours in jail after being arrested before either criminal charges are filed, the person is released or a judge grants an extension).

An initial appearance in court is scheduled for Monday, and a scheduling conference for the case has already been scheduled for July 29.

Regarding the mountains of evidence to sort through, I see motions for continuances from both sides, but those are not loopholes in the law.

What I quoted from the law. The possibility of delay.

That is a good idea - never thought of that. This makes sense if he was secretly filming (and I would guess he hid his activities from his roommates) - it's not uncommon for someone who is hiding something to lash out when someone else disrupts the activity, etc.

Good observation.

<modsnip - quoted a removed post>

We don't know what happened. I would point out though we don't know all sources of his income nor anything about his finances, that is all conjecture as well, and unless I missed it, we don't know her wages, etc. As far as judging either neighborhood, it seems to me as well that may be in the eye of the beholder. Are you saying his neighborhood was bad and hers was upscale? He ran an AirBNB and owned a home, she had a rented room, to our knowledge. Sources of income are debated and I fail to see how you assume she made more money than he?

<modsnip - general sd/sb lifestyle discussion>
I am not trying to argue but simply point out there is little that is not just assumed with your points either. Everything in this case (of what we know at least) points mostly to one direction but certainly it does not mean that is what happened. We don't know.

<modsnip - more sd/sb general discussion>

She was bound. There were cameras. I could add other things. Sadly this does not point to SB/SD in the usual way portrayed by some but to something else altogether.

He seems to be an especially evil and twisted perp and I don't doubt drew her in in some way.

And bottom line is that I am really sorry she encountered him, no matter how it occurred.

Jmo.

Not sure why there is the continued need to keep ascribing this to an SB situation. We know the two of them had a million ways to meet - they were both on church dating sites, were on Tinder and Bumble, went to bars in downtown SLC - yet there's a continued focus that it must have been through an SD/SB situation when that's completely illogical since she made more than he did, he lived in a worse neighborhood than she did, etc. And there's no evidence he was on a SD/SB site or could even write in a way to make her think he was successful.

What makes you think they didn't connect through traditional dating channels?

And ...I think if you talked to most women in SB situations, they'd tell you they were very happy and these types of relationships are often far healthier than the pressures of college dating. And certainly healthier than something involving dating unsuccessful losers like AA or the last situation like this in Utah which involved dating a guy working as a bouncer at a bar.
It's possible that they met in a traditional way, but we know they were both on dating sites and the man who was interviewed by a reporter claimed that they did meet on a dating site.

What is the source that they both went to bars? I haven't read anything about Ayoola going to bars in downtown Salt Lake City. Also where was it mentioned that ML was active on Church dating Apps. I remember that the VI said her parents were very involved with the church but ML was not so much anymore.

As I have suggested before, there is also a chance that he was one of the men she was casually dating, but the last person who posted that she knew him and may have been romantically involved with him was accused of victim blaming and I have not seen much discussion about it ever since.

Either way, I doubt she knew him for very long or at least not very well. He must have deceived her or fooled her in some way. Imo

We do and say things to fit our narrative. An article came out saying AA lived a life of contradictions but isnt that what most human beings do?

The same people who say her lifestyle and choices didnt matter and didnt play a part are the same people who would take her to the woodshed and look down upon her if she were still alive. I'm not throwing darts. This is reality.

It sounds to me like he got angry every time things didn't go his way. His roommate said he often got angry and his ex-wife claimed he threatened to kill her when she wouldn't move to Utah.
I don't think he was content unless he was in control, especially when it came to women. He couldn't just let it go when he was told by the woman from work to leave him alone. It's as if he had to have the last word.

I wouldn't be surprised if control and sexual motivation was the driving force behind this crime. It seems to be a pattern for him.

If they were having a relationship, maybe he was possessive of her and jealous that she was seeing other men. Imo

At the end of the day AA will get his. He is a predator.

But if you try to look past the circumstances of how ML even made the choice to meet him that hour then you're doing society and future victims no justice.

I seriously wonder if he has both OCD and a form of pyromania that involves humans. Hence, a very dangerous man.

Yes, and I think this is exactly why LE said they were focused on finding out what the context of their relationship was or how they connected.

They are taking the time they need to find out every detail so they can put the story together and find the motive, so they can make sure justice is served and prevent crimes like this from happening again.

I don't think LE would have made the comment about safety and taking the time to talk to our children if they were not concerned about being more aware of the dangers young people face today. Imo

Well, I'm not sure what he's got but he definitely has something.
What he did was far beyond normal.

Boxer, I agree. The former ex-wife would do best to not speak...her history is pretty bad.

If entities like the university are giving out "menus" of students, including addresses, etc, then I think it's very worthwhile to look beyond the exact circumstances of how they met. So if you're saying there should be no exposure of some of these apps and "menus" then I don't agree. Parents paying for their kids' education should know about the choices available. It's not necessary to expose these apps and programs with relation specifically to ML, but there should be an overall expose, you betcha. So that other potential victims can be warned to share their whereabouts with a friend if not wanting to do so with family, and other self-protection steps they can take. We warn young people about lots of things as they progress into universities.

Its easy to feel “safe” amongst friends. But, you do not really know your fellow classmates, their past, or what they are really like. Do not trust people simply because you go to school with them. Like with any new relationship, those around you must earn your trust.

Always let someone know where you are

-Be Social Media Savvy

-Protect Your Privacy

If you want to be intimate with someone, choose the privacy of your room over theirs. In your room, there are no hidden cameras or classmates peeping in to see what is going on.
