Not on the docket which is up through September 18 at 2:30pm.

Thanks for checking on this MsFacetious!

  • #63
Still not on the docket. Which I guess isn't surprising since it's still only through Sept 18. Odd. Well, okay then!

  • #64
Much appreciated for your checking on this McFacetious!

  • #65
Still not on the docket through October 1.
Maybe kporter can check xchange again? I don't have access to it at home.

Okay, I decided something stunk so I looked around and found him on another docket. I'm not sure when they moved him? Same county but different city and court house.

Maybe I'm just an idiot and he's been there the whole time. I was assuming he'd be tried in the city the murder occurred in. However, it's only required to be the same COUNTY. So they probably went with the bigger court.

He has a status conference Monday October 22, 2018 at 3pm.
This is just a "so, counsel, where are we at on this case?" type of meeting. Generally fairly quick and generally fairly uneventful. Though sometimes motions get sprung on you at these hearings.

I can't get over how much lighter their case load is. WOW. They only have like 1-5 cases at 9am. While our jurisdiction has hundreds. Unbelievable.

MsFacetious! Greatly appreciated!

Thought Peggy Sue was forgotten about! :(

Not forgotten at all. Just been a very rough few weeks here. I haven't even been checking the docket on my own clients cases. Finally got all the fires down there under control. I was so hoping Kiplyn would be found in that process but no such luck. I've still got a major stressful hearing next week but we are mostly prepared for it. (Until the day before when my boss calls me freaking out. LOL)

It does look like he's been with the same judge the whole time, I just wasn't thinking. Major cases go to the bigger courthouse. My bad.

Oh - I hope all goes well next week MsFacetious!

And I want to thank you again for all your help on some of these cases that I can't access court sites. I probably shouldn't follow cases where I can't get into the States' court site! :(

Monday, Oct. 22nd:
*Status Hearing (@ PT) - UT - Peggy Sue Ellsworth Case (28) (disappeared July 8, 1988, Spanish Fork; found May 22, 2017 buried where they used to live) - Michael Ignatius Kufrin (62/32 @ time of crime) - arrested & charged (7/17/17) with 1st degree felony murder.
11/6/17 hearing – Kufrin refused to be transported to court.
6/1/18 Update: 1) Defense counsel filed a motion seeking in-person (contact) visits with their client, their investigator, and a computer. County jail policy apparently won't allow contact visits by investigators, and the use of computers is restricted. Defense counsel argues that the prosecutor's discovery is provided electronically and must be reviewed electronically, and that the defendant is hearing impaired and can't communicate effectively except in person. 2) The State filed a motion to conduct DNA testing that will consume entire samples. Defense counsel wants the testing to be done by a neutral testing facility, with both parties to split the costs, and want their own expert to be present. These motions are both contested, and are set to be heard July 11.
7/11/18 Update: Next Status hearing on 10/22.

November 16, 2018 - Friday

10:00 AM 13 PRETRIAL CONFERENCE

STATE OF UTAH VS. KUFRIN, MICHAEL IGNATIUS

F1 - MURDER - 07/01/88

I would anticipate another delay. I don't expect it to go to trial in 2018, but it could!

Thanks a bunch MsFaceitous!! Much appreciated! :)

  • #76
As it gets closer the trial itself should also show up on the docket. Right now the pre trial is still on there.

My guess would be that they would go to that hearing and postpone trial at that time. If any of these were ever in the afternoon I could probably attend. I'm in another courthouse in the mornings.

MsFacetious, thank you for staying on top of the info and this case. May justice finally be served for Peggy. "The mills of the gods grind slowly but they grind exceedingly small". May they grind for Mr Kurfin as small as they can.

Still on the docket for pre trial at 10am.
Still not seeing a trial scheduled so I expect it will be postponed.

Anyone know if he entered a not guilty plea and if NO bail?? TIA! :)

I believe he already entered a not guilty plea. That happens at your arraignment which would have been long before now. I believe they waived his preliminary hearing in May so he should have entered a plea before then.

The bail is still at $250k CASH ONLY according to the jail.

Still nothing further on the docket.
This is from the jail's website (can you access this Niner?):

Name: KUFRIN, MICHAEL IGNATIUS

Height : 5'06

Weight : 175

4th District Court Case # 171402277
Bail: $250,000.00 Cash Only
76-5-203 Murder Arrested/Held For: Warrant of Arrest
