A 6-year-old Virginia boy who shot and wounded his first-grade teacher constantly cursed at staff and teachers, tried to whip students with his belt and once choked another teacher “until she couldn’t breathe,” according to a legal notice filed by an attorney for the wounded teacher.
...

Two days before the shooting, the boy allegedly “slammed” Zwerner’s cellphone and broke it, according to the claim notice. He was given a one-day suspension, but when he returned to Zwerner’s class the following day, he pulled a 9mm handgun out of his pocket and shot her while she sat at a reading table, the notice says.
....

The choking incident described in the notice was confirmed by the teacher....The teacher requested anonymity because she fears potential retaliation from the school district. ....she reported the incident to school administrators, ....
The boy was later moved into another class in another school.
....
Red flags abounded and still the admin. did nothing.

Moo ... This is child endangerment, at the very least. Not just the shooting, but other incidents.

....
The letter identifies that school administrator as “Assistant Principal Parker.” Dr. Ebony Parker, who was the vice principal at Richneck on the date of the shooting, resigned from NNPS Jan. 25. The letter accuses Parker of failing to call police, put the school on lockdown or evacuate students.

The letter alleges that Parker was familiar with the 6-year-old shooter and his behavioral issues at Richneck dating back to his time as a kindergarten student. The letter alleges that he had been removed from the school the year prior after allegedly choking his kindergarten teacher until she couldn’t breathe.

According to the letter, the student continued to display behavioral issues while in Zwerner’s class. He was allegedly on a modified schedule in fall 2022 after he cursed at staff and took his belt off on the playground and tried to whip kids with it. He’d been suspended the day before the shooting after allegedly slamming Zwerner’s cellphone and breaking it and cursing at guidance counselors.

What on Earth is a "Modified Schedule" ?
Is that in writing somewhere?

Maybe, that's part of the parents accompanying the child to school.

Maybe, he could only attend when the parents were available to stay with him.

Moo...

What is happening with school administrators in VA? Here's a 5 yo sexually assaulted and mom has to attend a SB meeting to get answered.

....
Roberts said she reported the incident to the school principal the very next day, but claimed she has not been told what happened, nor how it could have happened to her child.

"She’s only 5 years old, and nothing has been done about this. My daughter doesn’t want to go to school anymore," Roberts told Richmond Public School leaders during Richmond School Board meeting Monday night. "I need to know what to do to protect my child."
.....

Richmond School Board member Dr. Shonda Harris-Muhammed said the school administration never notified the school board of the allegation. She said the board should have been given that information, per school policy.

“We haven’t seen a threat assessment on what the parent stated today," Harris-Muhammed said during the meeting. "What are we doing? Are we truly making safety an issue?”

If I had to guess, I'd say yes, 100% violent at home as well. How they handled him is a mystery since we know almost nothing about his home life. Other than, they sent him to a public school that was clearly incapable of dealing with the kind of issues this boy has.
Like I've said before, and probably will again, I'm thinking that he's been in the foster care system.

I also can't believe that other parents at that school, and especially of his classmates, aren't standing in line to talk to the press about how they did not feel safe with him in the building.

That mother has a lot of courage to go public! I do worry about what's going to happen in 5 or 10 years when her daughter's classmates find out about this.

(And another preschooler assaulted a child to a degree where her mother could see it while bathing her? Yeah, that kid's been abused too.)

The parents can be a whole lot tougher on him at home than any teacher would ever dream of being. I’m not talking abusive, I’m talking restraining and much tougher discipline.
I had to go to Charlotte for an intense training on restraining. I was working one on one with a very violent 3 year old. I worked with him for 3 years. The two things I came away with is that I never wanted to restrain him and I never wanted to be restrained. I was the only teacher there, the rest were prison guards and psychiatric orderlies.
Wow. What kind of place did you work at?

Hard to believe the teachers can't pat a kid down when a gun was seen several times in his hand, and someone apparently saw him put it in his hoody pocket. Is it really illegal to search him, or does the "assistant principal" need to OK that? Apparently the teachers can search a backpack? Why are the kid's pockets not ok to search?

The school administration has the right to search backpacks, coats, and search of pockets. Generally, it is better to let child empty their own pockets, but in the case of a suspected weapon, I am not sure of the protocol. I am thinking in this case, I don't know if de escalation is better or just take down and obtain weapon. Or contact LEO.

Do you have the time to wait for LE? Who knows, I wouldn’t take the chance.

Head Start. A wonderful organization by the way. And not alone with the issues. All schools have them.
Edit: we’ll, he was really, really extreme! So I hope not all!

If allowed, it seems that would be a possible duty of the school security officer, maybe??

ETA: And, Richmond Elem obviously had a security officer as the kid had stared him down in the lunchroom earlier that day.

As I said, "I wouldn't know the process in case of a gun". I have asked kids to empty their pockets, usually in cases of accused theft. But, who cares about a pink eraser or purple marker...if you are worried a child has a gun. I am thinking that immediate physical intervention would have been appropriate. After all, this is a threat to life and safety of other children and staff.

I knew what you meant. And, I agree. I was just tossing the security guard into the mix as we know the school actually had someone filling that position ;)

Obviously, another person who needs job training or another job, if he wasn't able to keep staff and students safe in a school environment. It sounds like the teacher was amazing, after being shot, she directed to clear the classroom to get other kids to safety. Was anyone else working at this school aside from this gal?!
