VA - Boy, 6, in custody after shooting teacher, Newport News, Jan 2023 *mom charged* #3

I think it is odd that the criminal trial was put off until after the civil trial. In the Rebecca Grossman case, they held off on the civil trial until after the criminal trial, that has happened in several cases, including OJ Simpson case.

I still think it was a completely political move to delay the criminal trial until after the civil trial, and shouldn't have been allowed. I bet Parker will take the 5th, so no point in calling her, except to hear her say it, several times

That being said, the bar for a civil lawsuit is lower for proof and evidence. The school district made SO many errors here, I can't believe it. One of which, is this lawsuit not being settled. But $40 million? That seems an excessive amount. JMO

Keep in mind ....AW refused Workman's Compensation. It only covered two years, no long term benefits, hindered her ability for a settlement and relieved NNPS of any and all financial responsibility. She is 100% responsible for paying all of her medical bills and routine monthly household expenses.

I totally agree, there is a "connection" not sure what, having the civil trial precede the criminal trial. I base this on, the district attorney letting the clock run out on many of the potential charges. In addition, NNCOP had to fight tooth and nail to bring charges against the mother, only after the governor intervened and federal charges were filed. This is all documented in the first in second threads.

A former assistant principal at a Virginia elementary school ignored multiple warnings that a 6-year-old student had a gun in the hours before he shot his teacher, an attorney for the teacher said Tuesday as trial opened in the woman's $40 million lawsuit.

Abby Zwerner, a first-grade teacher at Richneck Elementary School in Newport News, was shot in the hand and chest in January 2023 as she sat at a reading table in her classroom. Zwerner spent nearly two weeks in the hospital, required six surgeries and does not have the full use of her left hand. A bullet remains in her chest...

"For the civil lawsuit filed by teacher Abby Zwerner, a jury of nine was selected, which includes five Black jurors, three white jurors, and one of mixed race. While news reports initially mentioned "seven jurors," this was likely before the final selection of nine, which includes two alternates".

The jury is interesting. Usually attorneys try to keep jurors for civil lawsuits more equitable in terms of ethnicity.

The litigant in this case is Caucasian, and most of the witnesses so far have been Caucasian. While the other side, including the perpetrator is African American, and the Assistant Principal, facing criminal charges is Ebony Parker, also African American.

I wonder if this has been reviewed, in terms of race, if this incident could have been racially charged?

Bbm.
My .02 is that it cannot be entirely dismissed from the equation.
Terrible that AZ can't fully use her left hand and that the bullet remains in her chest.
This is on the perp but even more on his mother and any other adult who didn't make sure the gun was unloaded and put away.
Imo.

i've been catching this case on Court TV. I have to say i'm shocked at the facial expressions of the Vice Principle. She truly is not taking one iota of responsibility in the teacher being shot. How many people would it have taken for her to actually get up from her desk and check this out? TOTALLY negligent IMO if i were a juror so far.

I am actually not surprised. Some School administrators like to act like they are just "supervisors". Not there to actually do work, aside from write up teachers and go out to lunch.

I have worked with many School administrators, excellent ones, and poor ones. We already know where Ebony Parker lays on that continuum.

Dr. Anderson is testifying now. Really interesting about Abby's hand, will never work correctly.

And Court TV has the camera on Ebony Parker. Wow! She is playing with her hair, and rolling her eyes! Wow. Pursing her lips. And then cut to Abby, who is sitting quietly.

Lots of detail about her hand, and that the function will never come back. Constant pain and scar tissue build up.

Limited range of motion in her hand. Abby is raising her hands in court, it is obvious how one hand looks significantly different. 3 years post shooting. Interesting. I can't figure out which hand it is.

I am attaching the screen shot below of Abby and Ebony. I think Ebony should have had a stylist consultant. Her hair is pulled back so severely. So every single minute facial expression is highlighted. More hair in her face would have been a better look in my opinion. Something. She doesn't present well to me.

Right now they look very similar. Both with long blonde hair. They are not identical twins, fraternal twins. But they look very similar now.

Judge will let people out early on Friday for Halloween. 2 more witnesses tomorrow for Abby Zwerner.

And I was incorrect, this case is against Abby Zwerner and Ebony Parker. Does that include the school district or Ebony Parker alone?

End of day for court today.

The suit against the District Superintendent and the Principal were thrown out.
Just the asst principal who ignored all the signs.
She does go to trial for 8 counts of Felony child neglect in the future (One for every bullet)

Interesting indeed.
I don't know if race played a part, but from previous stories about how dismissive Parker was when Abby went to her office. Wasn't there reports that when Abby spoke direcrly to her that day, about the gun, she said something to another person in the room (as if Abby wasn't there) to the tune of tell her or something along those lines ..

Very unprofessional and unsupportive. I wonder what the relationship was like with the other principal.

I don't think what she's asking is over the top. Her entire life has changed and her goals were snatched away from her, behind something that was entirely preventable.
