VA - Boy, 6, in custody after shooting teacher, Newport News, Jan 2023 *mom charged* #3

You really do have to wonder what in the heck kind of a homelife a child has, who's going around trying to choke adults (at 5 years old), then takes his mom's gun and shoots another one (at 6 years old) and states

"I did it, I shot the <blank> dead!"

Yep, I'm looking right back at the mother on this one.

The Federal government cares more about this child than they care about any other child or teacher or staff member at this school. So they will hide and protect him at all costs.
The Feds twist the arm of schools to include dangerous and out of control students in regular classrooms by threatening to take away funding. The Feds consider extremely disturbed violent children as disabled, no different than a child in a wheelchair, or with dyslexia.
Schools take the money, playing a game of Russian roulette everyday. They lost on this day.
There are also parents who coach their children to misbehave, so they can get SSI. This has been termed "crazy checks," and because there are doctors who will sign off on this, no questioned asked, it makes things much harder for children who have genuine disabilities that weren't caused by anyone else.

I agree but I'd add and the Father. Wasn't he charged with domestic violence?

I have been disturbed by the video games so many of these kids play. And the content they watch on YouTube. So many single Moms are just checked out, by working, dealing with life. They plunk their kid in front of a video game so they can chill.

It probably isn't any different from what I did as a young Mom, but back then, it was a benign show, like "Barney", not a video game where you are a soldier, shooting enemies.

Yep... neither qualify as responsible. And, I thought mom sure spent a long time being seen by many as a victim in this shooting.

It's very possible he's watched violent videos, films, music videos, and video games with verbally abusive arguing parents and/or caretakers. He's learned it from someone somewhere. Unless all the kids at school talk like that now.

I have no doubt that this particular child had been exposed to a significant amount of inappropriate behavior, that a child should not be allowed to watch, or see.

Not sure how the mom is a victim. She may like to view herself as one, she might be a victim of DB though...but the gun and her son it happened on her watch.

I would agree with your statement 100% and around violent people!

In an interview with the Washington Post, Amy Kovac describes for the first time holding the child after he shot and wounded his first-grade teacher:

Kovac said she found the six-year-old standing next to his first-grade desk. She recognized him — he had been her one-on-one reading student since the start of the year. His arms were crossed, and a handgun lay on the floor next to him.

Kovac said the moment was chilling, but she calmed her nerves, took the boy by the hand and led him to the front of the classroom, where she used a phone to call 911. She then sat at Zwerner’s desk holding the boy in her arms for three minutes until police arrived. It seemed like an eternity.
“While I was holding him, he told me he had gotten his mom’s gun the night before and put it in his backpack,” Kovac said. “He also told me he only had time to load one bullet.”

ETA: Like in the backseat of her car, next to the edibles....

I don't even want to speculate as to how many more could have been injured or even lost their lives IF he had loaded more. This makes me sick.

It’s all about parental control and discipline. It’s a parents choice to purchase or provide access to these games and systems. A six yo does have the financial means to purchase these items on their own.

It is what, it is.

I’m not sure what NNS is stating is accurate or just selective interpretation …. I read records can be released with a Subpoena. Question being… will DA Pursue these records for the grand jury investigation? Moo

….
  • Generally, schools must have written permission from the parent or eligible student in order to release any information from a student's education record. However, FERPA allows schools to disclose those records, without consent, to the following parties or under the following conditions (34 CFR § 99.31):
    • School officials with legitimate educational interest;
    • Other schools to which a student is transferring;
    • Specified officials for audit or evaluation purposes;
    • Appropriate parties in connection with financial aid to a student;
    • Organizations conducting certain studies for or on behalf of the school;
    • Accrediting organizations;
    • To comply with a judicial order or lawfully issued subpoena;
    • Appropriate officials in cases of health and safety emergencies; and
    • State and local authorities, within a juvenile justice system, pursuant to specific State law.

….
Police noted they are trying to obtain more information about the student from Child Protection Services, in addition to more records on the choking incident and are awaiting those records from school officials.
….
fficials said: 'Unfortunately, FERPA, the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, prevents schools from releasing information from a student’s education record.

'U.S. Department of Education guidance states “schools must have written permission from the parent or eligible student in order to release any information from a student's education record.”'

I hope AZ's legal team manages to get the whole truth and nothing but the truth in court (and to the public)!
I think it’s encouraging at least two of the teachers from the school have spoken publicly.

I will be sorely disappointed if the DA does not seek the records NNPS are refusing to release.

I do feel AZ has the support of both houses in the state. They both issued Recognition for her bravely (see early post) and the Governor and Attorney General stated they are watching the case.

Sadly IMO...the DA and NNPS are funded by the same entity.
I too, can remain hopeful for the sake of AZ and all children in the midst of this nightmare...but I have seen things like this play out before. $$$ always ( usually ) wins.

"I shot that b---- dead,"

It makes me sick, to think that other littles in that classroom witnessed this horror, let alone possibly hearing those words about their beloved teacher.

My 6 year old grand-little is heading to "big boy school" in a few days. My heart hurts.

Hug your littles!

Peace

And, that $$$ that (usually) wins has not (and will not in the future) provide a safe environment for teachers and students.

My guess is, that wasn't the first time the other children in the class heard this boy speak this way of the teacher, or anyone else.
