“Newport News Commonwealth's Attorney Howard Gwynn filed a motion to assign a special grand jury to this investigation to determine if anyone else should face charges related to the Richneck Elementary shooting.”

same article as above
What a joke MOO I’m beginning to believe the DA Grand jury is just another cover up and no one will be held accountable.

I’m so mad , it makes me shake.

Updated article ….

Taylor seemed irritated Tuesday in court, standing hand on hip as she faced Circuit Court Judge Christopher Papile. Defense attorney James Ellenson said that she does, indeed, hold herself responsible for what happened to Zwerner.

JT had once taken the keys from his mother’s purse, and Child Protective Services directed her to put the keys in a lockbox, which Taylor did. But she left the loaded gun in her purse, and JT told authorities he stood on a dresser drawer to reach it.

When asked about locking up the car keys but not the loaded gun, Ellenson said he had not discussed that with Taylor.

Two days before the shooting, prosecutors said JT told Zwerner, “I’m never coming back to your room, you b****.” The next day, January 5, he was suspended.

When confronted by police shortly after the shooting, JT told authorities “F*** you, I shot my teacher,” and he punched a staff member who was restraining him in the face. The child also reportedly said, “I stole that gun from my mom, I needed to shoot my teacher.”

Police say they found the Taurus 9mm on the floor of the classroom. The gun had additional rounds in the magazine.

I don’t see remorse from the mother. She appears to have a grand sense of Entitlement.

If the information/statement are allowed in AZs case I would hope the judge would recognize NNPS clearly failed to act to protect students and staff.

It’s just unbelievable, as the story unfolds.

I do believe she will walk free MOO

Deja Taylor's misdemeanor charge of endangering a child by reckless storage of a firearm was nolle prossed in court, meaning prosecutors set that charge aside. As part of the plea agreement, prosecutors said they will not seek a sentence that is longer than state sentencing guidelines, which call for six months in jail or prison. Her sentencing is set for Oct. 27.
"I still think no jail time would be appropriate. Given the mitigating factors that will present at sentencing...I mean, basically, this was the Commonwealth's case," Taylor's attorney, James Ellenson, explained. "We haven't put on our evidence about what is the mitigation and that'll be presented at the sentencing."

And more …

When police arrived at the school that day, they entered the classroom and saw the boy being restrained by the reading specialist, according to the stipulation of facts document Jenkins read aloud in court.

The boy used a profanity and said “I shot my teacher,” before breaking free and punching the reading specialist in the face, the document states.

The gun was on the floor nearby. “My mom had that. ....I stole it because I needed to shoot my teacher,” the boy said, according to the document.

The document said the boy had been diagnosed with a defiance disorder. He had previously taken his mother’s car keys from her purse, which prompted her to put her keys in a lock box. But she continued to keep her gun in her purse, the document states.

I saw this story on the nightly news last night- mom sure looks, shall we say, defiant. the newsperson said the child is in therapy and "doing better every day"--- sure he is. I don't believe we have heard the last of this child or his mother.

What concerns me now, especially after reading more about 'JT'... is that there more than likely are many other potential 'JT's' out there.....and schools will remain silent, not allowed to react, and some parents will continue with extreme negligence.

See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil....

sigh....

It certainly appears (from news link above) being defiant is typical and approved behavior for mommy, daddy and son. jmo

LE should have been notified of the 2021 incident Per A) 2

§ 22.1-279.3:1. Reports of certain acts to school authorities; reports of certain acts by school authorities to parents; reports of certain acts by school authorities to law enforcement

A. Reports shall be made to the division superintendent and to the principal or his designee on all incidents involving:

1. Alcohol, marijuana, a controlled substance, an imitation controlled substance, or an anabolic steroid on a school bus, on school property, or at a school-sponsored activity, including the theft or attempted theft of student prescription medications;

2. The assault and battery that results in bodily injury of any person on a school bus, on school property, or at a school-sponsored activity;

ETA: There's more verbiage at the link... could my interpretation be incorrect?

I bet Abby wanted to report these incidents and she was told NOT to speak up, and therefore it may caused a rift between her and ADMIN.

Perhaps DT has defiance disorder as well as her son.
He learned it from someone, perhaps both parents. Nature and Nurture DNA plus lack of proper parenting.
How do we know the mom didn't give him the gun?
Is it possible he overheard his parents complaining about the teacher or making threats and he carried them out?

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — The mother of a 6-year-old student who police say intentionally opened fire on his first-grade teacher pleaded guilty Tuesday in a Virginia court in connection with the shooting in January.

Deja Taylor, 26, was charged with felony child neglect and could serve up to six months in state prison based on a recommendation by the Newport News commonwealth's attorney. A judge could decide to go beyond the guidance when he sentences her on Oct. 27.

As part of a plea deal, a separate charge — a misdemeanor count of recklessly leaving a loaded firearm so as to endanger a child — was dropped, allowing Taylor to avoid a potential six-year prison sentence.

James Ellenson, a lawyer for the family, said Taylor remains remorseful, although he believes no prison time would be the appropriate sentence...

It’s all about parental control and discipline. It’s a parents choice to purchase or provide access to these games and systems. A six yo does have the financial means to purchase these items on their own.

It is what, it is.

All MOO

Police insist accidental shootings are 100 percent preventable and the case here can serve an important safety lesson for parents everywhere.

“We need parents and adults to be responsible with firearms. We cannot have juveniles shooting themselves or others. These are tragedies that can be avoided,” said IMPD Lt. Shane Foley.

I thought he was living with grandfather per the interview with DT, grandfather and attorney... but I guess he could have been moved again now.

“Prosecutors believe that the child stood on a drawer of his mother’s dresser and grabbed the gun out of her purse. He later told investigators that he stole the gun because "I needed to shoot my teacher."…

…According to prosecutors, CPS also discovered the child played with his mother's gun at his grandmother's house, saying he "wanted to go to a gun range."”

Unreal. The mere fact that a 6-year-old was able to rack, aim, and fire a 9mm handgun has been beyond mind boggling to me. My dad has a 9mm Taurus (which is the gun he used—according to the SW affidavit), and even I have a hard time pulling back the slider.

Scary thought, huh?!
If he doesn't get proper therapy and care now what will he be able to do at age 12? or 15? 18?

No matter how advanced video games might be (nor how clever this 6 yr old could be)... I think someone taught and allowed this child to practice with the real gun prior to shooting AZ. jmo
