Court records indicate the delay comes at the request of both the defense and prosecutors, in part because a report was not yet available from the guardian ad litem. In Virginia, a guardian ad litem is appointed to represent the interests of the child in cases alleging neglect.”

At a brief hearing in Newport News Circuit Court, prosecutors revealed for the first time how they believe the boy took the weapon from his mother’s purse, and alleged that it was not the only time he had gotten hold of it.

Taylor’s attorney had previously said it was unclear how the boy got ahold of the gun because it was stored with a trigger lock on the top shelf of a bedroom closet. But Assistant Newport News Commonwealth’s Attorney Joshua L. Jenkins said in court Tuesday that the 6-year-old took the gun from his mother’s purse, which was on top of a dresser. Jenkins said the boy pulled out a dresser drawer and stepped up to reach the purse.

The gun was not secured with a trigger lock and was regularly stored atop the dresser, the prosecutor said.
“‘I stole it because I needed to shoot my teacher,’” Jenkins said the boy told investigators after the shooting.

The mother would have to have a real epiphany and if her son shooting a teacher wasn't it, what would be it?
It seems her ability to make good judgments is clouded by her addictions. That needs to be addressed.
