VA - Boy, 6, in custody after shooting teacher, Newport News, Jan 2023 *mom charged* #3

  • #341

“Meanwhile, the mother of the 6-year-old boy who shot Zwerner is still awaiting sentencing for felony child neglect. Deja Taylor’s sentencing was scheduled for Friday afternoon but postponed until December.

Court records indicate the delay comes at the request of both the defense and prosecutors, in part because a report was not yet available from the guardian ad litem. In Virginia, a guardian ad litem is appointed to represent the interests of the child in cases alleging neglect.”

I guess my memory is failing as I don't remember the gun was stored in mom's purse.

Deja Taylor was charged with felony child neglect after her son took her gun from her purse and used it to shoot Richneck Elementary School teacher Abigail Zwerner on Jan. 6, according to police. Taylor pleaded guilty to the charge in August and was scheduled to be sentenced Friday.

On the eastern shore, Richmond to FC, there is a shooting on school property or within 1/2 mile, weekly. It's harder and harder to read the news in the mornings.
Is this true? A school shooting weekly? How is this happening?

Deja Taylor, 26, owned the gun her son used to shoot first-grade teacher Abigail Zwerner at the Newport News school, and admitted as part of her plea it was stored in such a way that the boy could access it. At a brief hearing in Newport News Circuit Court, prosecutors revealed for the first time how they believe the boy took the weapon from his mother’s purse, and alleged that it was not the only time he had gotten hold of it.

Taylor’s attorney had previously said it was unclear how the boy got ahold of the gun because it was stored with a trigger lock on the top shelf of a bedroom closet. But Assistant Newport News Commonwealth’s Attorney Joshua L. Jenkins said in court Tuesday that the 6-year-old took the gun from his mother’s purse, which was on top of a dresser. Jenkins said the boy pulled out a dresser drawer and stepped up to reach the purse.

The gun was not secured with a trigger lock and was regularly stored atop the dresser, the prosecutor said.
“‘I stole it because I needed to shoot my teacher,’” Jenkins said the boy told investigators after the shooting.

When was there a school shooting on the Eastern Shore of Virginia? Which school?

I looked and I couldn’t find anything about this.

Shocker. Not. Most of us knew there was no failed trigger lock...

I'll fully admit, I gave her the benefit of the doubt (at first).
She proved me wrong. :(

This is ridiculous. She has suffered no repercussions for her bad behavior and parenting. She continues to lie and use drugs. Very discouraging.

Even within a 1/2 mile radius indicates that this is a very high-crime community.

I hope the child is permanently removed from her custody. Otherwise he's doomed. MOO

The mother is a liar, isn't remorseful, and an addict. What possibly could go wrong in delaying her sentencing in the meantime?

The mother would have to have a real epiphany and if her son shooting a teacher wasn't it, what would be it?
It seems her ability to make good judgments is clouded by her addictions. That needs to be addressed.

I hope she WINS!!!
Oh, I'm sure they'll settle eventually rather than see all their dirty laundry aired, but I hope she has a savvy lawyer that makes sure she gets every penny she can.

MOO
