That he is charged is not that big of a surprise to me. I expected something if not murder. I thought early on that one media source stated Codi was last seen in Nov or Dec of 2021 so this 18 July date IS a surprise to me. AND they've apparently charged him without a body being found.

It was November. But iirc it was the aunt saying she heard him on the phone or something similar. Nobody had actually laid eyes on him

[...]

But based on a statement Bigsby made while locked up on a host of child neglect and abuse charges, Hampton police and the FBI searched an outdoor area in Maryland, near Washington, in the summer of 2022, a law enforcement source said.

Though that didn’t turn up any leads on Codi’s whereabouts — and the boy’s body wasn’t found — Bigsby’s jailhouse statement is still being discussed in his case.

In March, one of Bigsby’s attorneys, Amina Matheny-Willard, wrote in a motion to toss the case that prosecutors — through the regional jail correctional officer — “obtained a statement” from Bigsby last August while he was locked up. What exactly Bigsby said in the statement remains a mystery.

[...]

Matheny-Willard contended that prosecutors slow-walked providing the jailhouse statement to Bigsby’s defense lawyers, saying it took more than three months to turn over. But Hampton Commonwealth’s Attorney Anton Bell said it didn’t need to be shared earlier because it involved the investigation into Codi rather than the other pending charges.

It wasn’t immediately clear Friday whether that obtained statement was part of the basis for this week’s new charges.

Court docs: Father accused of killing Codi Bigsby months before 4-year-old was reported missing
“The news isn’t a surprise to me. I hope that today starts the healing process for the family and for those of us who found ourselves in pain for a child that we never met.”

STATEMENT FROM FORMER HAMPTON POLICE CHIEF MARK TALBOT
This part of the article you posted stands out for me:

“From the first minutes of the investigation, myself, the assistant chiefs, members of command staff, were at Codi Bigsby’s residence to see for ourselves what the evidence demonstrated. We have followed the evidence from day one. It was very clear to us, the evidence about what likely occurred has been very clear. There is little about this that has been mysterious,” said former Hampton Police Chief Mark Talbot during a Feb. 10, 2022 press conference.

I wonder what evidence he's talking about? Hopefully we'll soon know.

So Corey disappeared Codi father's day weekend . What a flipping jerk

Would they list Cory as a fugitive because he hasn't been served yet?

How LE came up with the date of 18 June 2021 is both surprising and interesting. He was too young to be required to go to school. I wonder if child care noted his absence. Or he took a trip - e.g., to Maryland - and it was noted that he returned without Codi.

I too wonder about the specificity of that date, June 18, 2021. I am curious if something in the letter written by Cory that his attorney was all atwitter about that prosecutors knowing about months before she did had some sort of admission of guilt or other information that led investigators to that date as Codi's date of death.

Cory Bigsby gave a jailhouse statement to a correctional officer last summer. Now, he’s charged with killing his son.
I really want to know what he said.

I hope there's good media coverage tomorrow. I hope they release the probable cause . I feel awful for the searchers and water team they have been searching all over without a clue. Watching the community still keeping Codi's name out there. It's just sad. I hope one day they can lay this boy to rest properly but I'll take justice for Codi. Just my 2 cents

Here is what puzzles me about the June 18, 2021 missing date:

Codi's got an older brother (5 years old when Codi was reported missing) and twin younger siblings (aged 2 at that time).

If Codi was murdered and disposed of back in June 2021, where did his older brother think he went? What precipitated Corey reporting Codi missing that day in January 2022? And didn't the realtor think she had seen Codi when Corey was looking for and contracting for his new home?

I need to revisit the timeline and older articles. Maybe I misremember but I have to ask - what prompted him to report Codi missing if he had been dead and gone since June the previous year? A need for him to start school soon? A relative asking after him?

Neighbors react to Cory Bigsby murder charge.
Neighbor Diane Hicks was also surprised by the length of time from when Cory reported his son missing.

“I thought it happened recently,” Hicks said. “It’s just sad. I cried. He was just a little boy.”
