“A Springfield husband and wife were shot and killed in their front yard Wednesday morning and officers were searching for the assailant, Fairfax County police said.

Police identified the victims as Col. Edward McDaniel and Brenda McDaniel, both of whom had Army experience, police said, but their statuses were not clear. Edward, 55, was a physician, and Brenda, 63, was also a medical professional.

Fairfax County police said they believe the shooter fled in a 2018 Nissan Altima with Maryland tags. Police did not name the suspect but said he was known to the victims or their relatives. Police said license plate readers in the D.C. area have not registered any hits for the vehicle.”

“A man and his wife with ties to the military were shot to death in their front yard in Springfield Wednesday morning, according to Fairfax County Police Department. Police said they believe the deaths are connected to a dispute or burglary at the house that they were called to just two days earlier.”

“There were family members inside the home when the shooting happened, Davis said. Everyone that was in the home is in a safe place. Davis said one of the people inside the home may be the son of the victims.

"The shooter or shooters, we strongly believe, are known to a relative of our two victims," Davis said. "I can tell you this, this was not a random act of violence, not at all."

"I'm not prepared to closely identify who we think it might be," Davis said. "But we're actively working a person of interest."

Neighbors said friends of the son have been involved in trouble in the neighborhood before.

"The teenage kids, their friends are bad people," Carlos Buendia, who lives just a few doors down from where the shooting happened, said. "They bring weapons into the neighborhood."

Neighbor Juliana Buendia said she was shocked this incident happened in her neighborhood but said she's sadly not surprised at where the crime happened.”

That’s my interpretation.

Mine too untill I read the article from DM above which states:

"Dispatchers received a 911 call reporting someone breaking into the home around 9.20am and officers arrived within two minutes after the call was placed, Davis said.
When they arrived they found two people shot in the yard."

The son must have called 911? Unless the victims call 911 then go outside are shot and killed and then found by police all in 2 minutes. If someone was breaking in I wonder why the heck they would go outside?? Were they not afraid? They had to of known the person.

Maybe they went outside figuring it was likely the same folks who’d tried to break into the house just a couple days earlier. Especially if those would-be burglars were acquaintances or friends of their son, the McDaniels might’ve phoned 911 and then headed outside to try to scare them off by telling them law enforcement was on its way. The latest reports say they are looking for two people and the getaway car:

Is it also your interpretation that one of the sons knew what was going to happen? TIA
Though I am not Real Anastacia, I doubt the son or even the perpetrators knew that was going to happen. Rather, I think the totality was a mix of inherently volatile and increasingly angry youths seeking to obtain something from one of the sons.

The group then returned to the house in an attempt to obtain what they wanted. The perpetrators may not have expected the victims to be home and had planned another burglary, or had planned to have a "conversation" with the son about the items.

The victims then confronted the group and probably refused to provide what they were looking for, refused to make their son available for a "discussion", and may have also refused to give them alternative compensation (cash?).

Frustrated by not being able to obtain what they had come for, and feeling 'dissed by the refusals, the perpetrators fly into a rage and spontaneously murder the couple.

The article linked in the opening post has been updated to identify the suspect: "Police say 20-year-old Ronnie Keandre Marshall is wanted in connection with the double murder, and should be considered armed and dangerous."

Edited 25 minutes later to add this article: Fairfax Co. police: 1 in custody in fatal double shooting; 2nd suspect sought | WTOP

Apparently LE found the car and made one arrest (name withheld), but they are still searching for RKM.

Second degree murder?! What kind of charge is that for this crime? Give me a flipping break!:mad::mad:
I am getting the feeling that it is more complicated than we think...

kind of weird clues coming down, possibly implicating a close family member into this big horrible mess...like hypothetically speaking---what if a close family member got involved in a shady or sketchy way with these 2 suspects---maybe took something from them or owed them something and they came to take it back? And poor Mom and Dad got caught up in the middle?

Hypothetically, I could see something like that. But still, wouldn't it be considered premeditated? At least one of the two tried to break in earlier in the week. Then they decide to return, presumably, with firearms??

Yes, I am curious to see the reasoning behind it being 2nd degree.
