VA - Herndon, Joseph Ryan shot, Christine Banfield stabbed, both deceased, in home - Feb 2023

It sounds like he's trying to show her lawyer sucked and that's why she decided to "work for the state" and forgo a trial. He has not touched any of the basic facts of the crime yet. Judge finally asked if he has "many more letters" to get through before giving the jury a break. This has been a slog imo. I'm behind on the feed so maybe it picks up.
It doesn't pick up. The witness (Magalhaes) gets a little testy, but it will soon be time to break for lunch, I think. Maybe it will pick up after the lunch break. We can only hope they get to the meat of the facts.

I am still confused that he had her get a gun from the safe rather than use the one he had given her that was in her POCKET?
Oh. That's news to me. I thought they were one and the same? So, the gun in the safe was in addition to the one in her pocket? There were two guns that she had access to then?

Funny enough, I have no problem hearing other videos I watch on YouTube. I think it is the acoustics of the different courtrooms that make it difficult to hear well. But, in my case, headphones would probably work the best. I've never tried them.

yep... I am getting ready to get headphones as well... My kids say NO airbuds, so they have to help me find the right headphones...
But I do need a new computer as well...

Due to the defense lawyer's plodding pace, the witness' true colors are showing. She's frustrated and showing attitude. Her little innocent girl act is gone now. She planned this with him. JMO

Yes, it was part of her testimony yesterday that he told her the code for the gun safe and she was confused. Earlier she said she had a gun in her pocket when fake leaving for the zoo. Her testimony yesterday was a lot shorter, I think I may have linked it.

Yes, both guns that belonged to Brendan, in addition to his service revolver that he shot Joe with.

Now defense atty is grilling her about her memory. She's using the good ole trauma excuse. She's a perpetrator of these murders though. She could've said no to the defendant. This wasn't a trauma that was perpetuated on her out of her control. They planned this for months. My guess, like most defendants, she doesn't want to show that she was in on the planning from the get go. She's using "memory problems" to protect her ego. She moved into the master bedroom after the murders! Why did the state give her time served? That's insane.

I think it was probably Brendan's idea, after she shot Joe, to create evidence (prints on the safe) that Brendan instructed her to get the gun out of the safe to use, and not that she was already carrying it in her pocket.

It would raise suspicion that she was carrying a gun when she didn't normally do that. IMO

State on redirect. Trying to make this witness sympathetic is a bad move imo. Now the state is asking about how she can't work as an au pair anymore and she doesn't know what she will do for work now because of this. About how her family in Brazil won't be able to support her. That's probably why she wanted to get the wife out of the way. She was gonna live her American Dream with the defendant. That was her plan!! We're supposed to feel sorry for her now because it didn't quite work out for her.

Gimme a break!

Wow. State def playing up the sympathy card. She should be concerned about what her future will be and scared after what she did. She is not sympathetic here. I feel like the state could've given this woman significant time for her role in these murders. These two could've been tried together. With the digital and forensic evidence plus evidence of their affair, they could've both been put away for life! At the very least they should've made her take a deal with at least 5-10 years for her role.

Are people finding Juliana an effective witness for the Commonwealth’s case against Banfield?

Yes, I am. I did not see the point in that long cross-examination, it was so repetitive. I didn't see what his aim was. She was consistent and I believe she's not lying.

Attorney should have stopped to blow his nose too, that constant sniffing!

Do not hire a nanny who looks like a sex worker. Just saying.

Hire someone who looks like Robyn Williams in "Mrs. Doubtfire".
Brendan reportedly has been having affairs since before they were married. He told other affair partners of his desire to get rid of Christine. It’s a shame they extended Juliana when her contract was up rather than sending her back to Brazil. He had not found other takers to help with his “plan.” Christine and Joe might still be alive.
