"Stepfather is not a suspect in disappearance of 19 year old Katelin Akens. Surveillance video corroborates his account of events."

Post the link to the article.

If he's not a suspect then where is the surveillance footage? A car at the mall caught on camera tells me nothing. All it tells me is that car was at the mall that day. Where is the surveillance footage of her leaving the car? Or inside the mall?

What evidence do you have that he is a suspect? Not trying to be snarky. LE said early on that his car was in the area and later said his story was corroborated and he is not a suspect.

Let's assume that is true, why would LE need to provide video evidence? Their evidence might not be a video and from their perspective - they've already told you the truth.

I'm not saying you're wrong. I'm saying that it seems hard to have any confidence in any theory at this point.

I'm wondering if she had a private conversation with someone through FB Messenger and that's why the police have all of a sudden become silent.

They could have also found some leads that they want to be quiet about in case they run or something like that.

I honestly think (IMO) that the police know a lot more and have uncovered information from the FB search, or evidence elsewhere.

This case is so crazy with so many holes and no real information. I have a ton of questions.

Keep in mind that what is "private" is not always so private and what people think is "anonymous" is not always so.
For example, IF she were using that Whisper App (supposedly allows you to post anonymous confessions) she could have verbalized some thoughts of leaving her current situation.

People think it is anonymous, but think again. If LE needs the info, it is there. From this article which site a Forbes article.
http://readwrite.com/2014/10/17/whisper-dont-trust-anonymous-apps-guardian

"In January, Forbes reported that Whisper does track users in order to ban harassers or bullies on the site, and that the app has enough information on users for law enforcement to be able to figure out who posts what on the app. Whisper CEO Michael Heyward is fine with that, Forbes notes."

Does anybody recall an example of law enforcement lying to the media about their evidence?

They lied when they said that no one was in the video with Hannah Graham and it was a reflection or shadow or something.

ETA: Everyone knew that was a lie because we saw the evidence itself. I'm not sure if anyone expected us to actually believe there was no one in the video or not, but that was definitely not true.

Well, if LE says they can verify his story, then I would guess they can. Who knows? I can think of several ways. For one, what if he took Katelin and actually had someone else with them. Maybe he has a gf or something. Maybe they stopped to eat something even pick up somehitng from a drive-thru and were spotted somewhere in Spotsy on the way. He could have used a credit card, they asked the restaurant employee and they say yes those three people where in the car. Then they have traffic cams of his car in the area of the mall. LE says that the place where he says he dropped her has no cameras. So he and his gf (or whoever) drop her off and then minutes later they are on camera somewhere without her. Who knows.... wandering the aisles of Best Buy or something. So that tells LE that she was with him at x-oclock and then minutes later she is not. Maybe LE doesn't want to bring in all this info about the SD and another person because people would go crazy harassing them and accusing them of killing her. So they know he is innocent and that is all they will say.

Just one scenario that would fit, imo.

ETA: I almost forgot to add that LE also is under no obligation to divulge any of that info with the public. They don't have to tell us how they know. They don't even have to tell the family. Anyone who has been close to a missing person case knows this: Family is often as much in the dark as the general public. Unless LE wants the world to know, they won't even tell family because chances are that someone will slip and blab and that could destroy progress in the investigation.

Gone away on vacation for two weeks without the internet and I come home to find out there have been new publicized developments in the case.

I'm so disappointed. I'd love to have come back here to learn Katelin had been found alive and well. I still have hope.

Does anyone know when the last time Katlin came back home for a visit since moving to AZ?

Okay I used google fu and the ONLY place I can find an article that even says he was cleared was that fake article (or bad article) from twitter. Is there any other article that isn't sourced by that one that says he was cleared?

Here is an article that says they corroborated that his car was at the mall but they have no evidence that he was actually there, or that Katelin was even there. Are there any articles written after December 10th that say he was cleared?

(Sorry for all the posts, I'm having a lot of downtime at work...LOL)

Why would her mother drop her daughter off at her ex-husband's house for a ride to the airport? Cellphone pings could be a reason for them knowing his car was near the mall.

<modsnip>

Lisa Sullivan, Katelin’s mother, says she dropped her daughter off at her stepdad’s home in SpotsylvaniaCounty on Saturday so he could take her to the airport to catch a flight to Arizona. Sullivan said the teen’s stepdad told her that Akens decided she wanted to go to Springfield Town Center first. She then planned to take the Franconia-Springfield metro to Reagan National Airport.

According to Captain Jeff Pearce with the Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office, authorities have been able to corroborate that Akens’ stepfather’s car was in the area of the mall that day, though there is no surveillance video of Katelin or her stepdad at Springfield Town Center. Captain Pearce says cameras were not covering the area of the mall that the stepfather says he left Katelin. He would not elaborate on how investigators confirmed the car was there.

The lack of updates is frustrating.

There are a handful of articles that suggest the stepfather was not involved. They are captured in the following:

http://www.fredericksburg.com/news/crime_courts/police-say-missing-teen-made-it-to-mall/article_ac4143ea-9eb0-50f9-ba37-c865c133dbf8.html

But he said police have corroborated the stepfather’s story that he dropped her off in Northern Virginia.

Pearce would not give details about how the story was corroborated, saying those are part of the ongoing investigation.

and

"The contents of luggage gave us some leads that we're following actively as we speak," he says, adding that it didn't show any signs of being tampered with. He would not elaborate on the specific nature of those contents, citing an open investigation, but he did say that it gave him hope Akens would be found alive.

"We're hoping – and this has happened before – that she simply decided that she wasn't going to go back [to Arizona] and made other arrangements," Pearce says. "Information recovered from her social media accounts and her cellphone records shows that [that may be case]."

Again, this could be weak evidence that ends up wrong or misdirection by LE or they do indeed have evidence that stepdad was not involved.

BBM for focus

Well, if the stepdad was a part of Katelin's life for around ten years, I don't think it is that odd that he was still taking an active role in her life. I don't know the situation first-hand, but maybe since he was still living in the area he often took part in helping out with the girls if their mom had to be at work or whatever.

I was thinking maybe no one could take her that day because of work and whatnot.

Its like in Christina Morrison case the guy who walked with her in
the garage and saw her last was for quite a while no suspect etc...then LE said they found Christina dna in the trunk of his car...I think sometime LE say one thing but they are working on other...I believe there is more to this story and I am not too sure about SD...

Exactly. Why isn't LE saying "KATELIN made it to the mall." Why the quotes about the SD making it to the mall? The SD isn't the one who is missing.... Who cares about him? Where the heck did Katelin end up?
