This a map I made for Thread #1 that may help you:

attachment.php

The SD would have travelled south on 95 to get back home, therefore his phone pinging would not be suspicious. I never see cell towers and don't know how many there are in certain areas. The luggage was found a few miles west of 95. Maybe it's possible to see if he got off the freeway. I don't know.

These are the scenarios I see involving the LE and family silence, post warrant to search facebook/whisper...

1. They found real evidence that she planned to run away and make it look like a disappearance, and perhaps plans to dump her luggage too. This took it off LE's top priority list and maybe family doesn't want to put too much out there for fear she could be stigmatized later (like job searches/future)? I would think they would still put out some message like "Katelin, we love you regardless of anything that has happened and just want to confirm your safety. Please give us a call so that we know that you are okay." That would at least "solve the case" and it could just be an internal issue.

2. LE found something suspicious on her facebook, such as a planned meet up or just contact with a known criminal and fear she has been or will be harmed and do not want to release any info until they locate her.

3. LE does not think she made it to the mall (I won't go into who/what/where as no one has been named a POI or suspect) and is collecting and testing evidence, waiting for a slip up, trying to disprove stories and alibis, checking any/all footage they can find, etc.

4. They are at a complete loss and/or are letting this slip through the cracks for whatever reason(s).

Scenarios I would doubt based on the very limited info the public has been give:

1. Suicide or known mental health issues or physical health issues. I think they would put out a message that she could be a danger to others or herself, as they usually do on those types of things, or that she is in need of medication, etc.

2. Random abduction. Of course there are Jesse Matthews type evil people out there, but this was daylight in a very specific time frame from last seen (if all given accounts are accurate), and she was not known to be under the influence or in distress. Unless she took a random cab ride from a driver with bad intentions (such as JM). But I think in broad daylight at the mall, and the fact that she wasn't lost and had a plan supposedly to get to the airport without a cab, makes this less likely. (again this relies on all of the accounts given being accurate, but if they weren't true, then that would honestly make it even less likely it was a stranger abduction...)

3. Casual change of life. I can't see someone just casually wanting to change it up or needing to clear their head, and going to the lengths of dumping their luggage and wallet and not contacting a fiancee or family for a full month including Christmas. I think if she ran away from her life, something big had to be going on. Lots of debt? Abuse or threats by someone? A crime? Something life altering and seemingly inescapable without changing "identities" completely. Also, someone would have to be harboring her and I can't see too many genuinely nice, law abiding people harboring someone for a month when LE and family are looking for them, if she just needed a bit of space. Anyone harboring someone from that many people would have to be involved in criminal activity themselves or understand that she had a big reason why she needed to hide. JMO though.

I don't see how her luggage not being tampered supports that she'd be found alive. If foul play was involved, then of course the bad guy would get rid of her luggage. If it wasn't, then she'd like kind of need her things.

Pearce tells PEOPLE that the discovery of the luggage doesn't necessarily indicate foul play in the teen's disappearance. "The contents of luggage gave us some leads that we're following actively as we speak," he says, adding that it didn't show any signs of being tampered with. He would not elaborate on the specific nature of those contents, citing an open investigation, but he did say that it gave him hope Akens would be found alive.

In almost every case LE holds back some information from the public and oftentimes the family. Something only the perp or missing person would know, in order to confirm or dismiss possible leads, suspects etc. I think there could be more that was found in the luggage that LE is keeping to themselves at this time JMO.

I think there is a good chance that Akens removed her clothes from the suitcase and packed them into a backpack, and took off with someone on a motorcycle. They probably headed southbound.

I sure would like to know why you say that.

Well, her suitcase was found on the roadside. The clothes from the case were missing, and the only person that would want them is the person who used them. This means the owner of the case took the clothes from the case and dumped it. The only reason the owner of the case would do that is if the case was to big to carry. This would mean the person was ether walking/hitchhiking or riding a motorcycle.

This idea made me think of something - who carries only a suitcase, even if it's a carryon? It's usually suitcase and messenger bag, purse, backpack, etc. Did she have another bag and if so, where is it?

Obviously I am not necessarily an example for everyone but I do not carry a second bag, as I am not a purse kind of girl, and I HATE juggling more than one bag if it isn't necessary. I usually bring a carry on, and anything I need to grab (like an mp3 player, headphones, cell) I just stuff in the most outward pocket on the carry on, or in my pockets.

ETA: it might be especially nice to only have one efficient bag if you thought you were going to have to lug it through a mall, or using transit.

It doesn't mention being dropped off at the mall, only the metro station. Hmmm. Surely they knew at that time she was dropped off elsewhere, right?

This seems like the only place the metro was identified as the drop off location.

RBBM:

I found this link:

FCC Registered Cell Phone and Antenna Towers in Springfield, Virginia
http://www.city-data.com/towers/cell-Springfield-Virginia.html

There's a link on the page that allows you to narrow the search to just cell phone towers.

I'm not a local, so the number of towers is somewhat overwhelming to me. :blushing:

Perhaps our amazing WS Mappers could add the towers that are nearby the current "points of interest" such as the luggage recovery point, the mall, etc., it might be helpful? :sleuth:

Anyhow, I hope this at least helpful to you. :)

i'm glad to see that she finally is listed there! But i was concerned when I read that her butterfly tattoo on her arm covered "slash mark scars." I recall that she was following that Baby Don't Cut page and now I'm really worried that she may have harmed herself.
:-(
Where are you Katelin???

Wait a minute. Last seen in Ruther Glen?? This is new information. Where is that? That's not where her SD lives. That's not where the mall is. Does her mom live there? If mom dropped her at SD's i could see them using that town as a location. Of course if they have verified SD's story that he dropped her at the mall then the place last seen should be there.
Very confusing. How was she last seen in Ruther Glen???
