If someone were to call the LE handling the case and ask for status can the LE advise if it is still indeed a missing case?

Well, I would suspect so, if they're still seeking the public's assistance according to their flier?

"The circumstances surrounding this case are suspicious enough to warrant our full investigative efforts, in attempting to locate Miss Akens," said Sheriff Roger L. Harris in a release. Akens’s family lives in Caroline County and her step-father lives in Spotsylvania. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Solvers at 800/928-5822 or the sheriff’s office at 582-5822.

I wonder if anyone (family, fiancé, LE) has cross referenced the clothing that WAS found, to clothing that could be see in any photos taken while she was in VA.
If she came to meet her new nephew, I would imagine there would have been multiple pictures taken and shared via social media, or text message.
Just a thought.. and strictly my opinion.

I'm not so sure the word 'safely' is a concern. My 21 yr old son just went back to Uni, I said to him "let me know when you're home safe and sound", he's texted me "Just arrived Mum, safe and sound".

Lol. Please remember. When there isn't 1 slight update in 30 days of a recent missing person that we care about; We tend to help keep the thread going by analyzing the simplest stuff. Lol. I guess it's more for quick conversation sake more than anything else with the hopes of keeping Katelin's thread front and center.

So I agree. The word itself would never dictate anything of much substance. But the conversation alone has allowed us to keep turning the wheels on this. Jmo.

We can only rehash the same information for so long before letting the case go or stay with the case by discussing miniscule things for the moment.

The brighter note.

A female teen goes missing on her way to the airport and was quickly mentioned on Nancy Grace. So Boom. We expected Massive coverage and searching efforts.

But what do we have. No updates nor searches nor public pleas in the media after 12/12/15. Even though she went missing 7 days prior.

So. What does that tell us?

I don't know about you guys. But it tells me that it's not as serious for now. Which is maybe why Nancy Grace and the local VA media let it go as well. Jmo

And every once in awhile someone thinks of something no one thought of before even though we've been saying the same thing for a week. :)

I'm confused, I'm English, what's up with the word "safely"? I don't understand why we're suggesting she can't have sent it because of that particular word.

We can't possibly even begin to analyse her texts without seeing what her usual ones were like.

Anyway, I'm late to this and haven't read #1, what has been said about whether she definitely left the stepdads house?
As usual, the reporting is all over the place, and lacks direct quotes from LE. There's a discrepancy surrounding surveillance video, and exactly how LE corroborated the stepfather's version of events, though it seems clear that they did.

At about :50 in the video at this link, you can hear Captain Pearce of the Spotsylvania SD say that the stepfather is not a suspect or person of interest.

Dec. 7, 2015
SPOTSYLVANIA, Va. (ABC7) — Spotsylvania Sheriff's Office investigators say surveillance cameras corroborate Katelin Akens' stepfather's account of events surrounding the disappearance of the teen.

Akens vanished after her stepfather drove the 19-year-old from Spotsylvania County to Springfield Town Center Saturday. She was scheduled to fly to Arizona to start school.

Akens' stepfather says she decided she wanted to do some shopping and would take the Metro to Reagan National Airport.

Dec. 10, 2015
Spotsylvania County detectives have determined that Katelin Akens’ stepfather did indeed take her to the Springfield Mall Saturday, but what happened to her after that remains a mystery.

Contrary to some reports, Sheriff’s Capt. Jeff Pearce said Thursday that police have yet to find any surveillance footage of Akens at the mall or anywhere else. But he said police have corroborated the stepfather’s story that he dropped her off in Northern Virginia.

Pearce would not say how the story was corroborated, saying that was part of the ongoing investigation.
The article goes on to say that LE was searching through video from the mall and Metro, and that they'd received "excellent cooperation" from Katelin's family.

Dec. 10. 2015
According to Captain Jeff Pearce with the Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office, authorities have been able to corroborate that Akens’ stepfather’s car was in the area of the mall that day, though there is no surveillance video of Katelin or her stepdad at Springfield Town Center. Captain Pearce says cameras were not covering the area of the mall that the stepfather says he left Katelin. He would not elaborate on how investigators confirmed the car was there.

Right now, police cannot confirm whether Katelin was at the mall or if she even left Spotsylvania. Authorities have also not yet said that the stepfather himself was at the mall, just that his car was in the area.

Thank you for clarifying, Bessie.

It is odd there have been so few updates, I hope the police are just watching and waiting as is sometimes the case when they're so quiet. Oh to be a fly on the wall!

So we can talk about if she left step-dad's house, but not about what she was last seen wearing?

Here ya go.

Katelin is described as a white female, 5'4", 122 pounds, with blonde hair and blue eyes. Her loved ones say she may be wearing a dark gray fleece pullover sweater with a Bass Pro Shop emblem on it, as well as pink and grey Vans brand shoes.

Anyone with any information is asked to call the Spotsylvania County Sheriff's Office or Crime Solvers at 1-800-928-5822 or 1-540-582-5822.

Gotcha. Thanks.

Great article here that confirms she was supposedly dropped off in northern Virginia. It doesn't say what day they reported her missing. How do they know for sure she was dropped off if she doesn't appear on video? Does that make any sense? This case stinks and I can see how many here would be frustrated following these cases.

But he said police have corroborated the stepfather’s story that he dropped her off in Northern Virginia.

Pearce would not say how the story was corroborated, saying that was part of the ongoing investigation.

The family called the Sheriff’s Office after learning that Akens’ never arrived in Arizona. Her luggage was found in a drainage ditch on River Road in Spotsylvania near its intersection with Fall Hill Avenue.

We have been over that issue quite a bit now, until there is an updated statement from LE I am not convinced of anything.

There are news reports in MSM that claim; they confirmed he left her at the mall, that they only confirmed his car was in the area of the mall, and that they have no proof she ever left Spotsylvania.

http://wric.com/2015/12/10/new-developments-in-case-of-19-year-old-missing-from-spotsylvania/

This article, I believe, tells us how little the cops know about Kaitlin's movements that afternoon. Does anyone believe that she'd throw away even one dollar if she left willingly? They know he was near the area because maybe he made a purchase like buying fuel, but no video of his car or Kaitlin exists at the mall.

Right now, police cannot confirm whether Katelin was at the mall or if she even left Spotsylvania. Authorities have also not yet said that the stepfather himself was at the mall, just that his car was in the area.

"Her phone charger, her wallet, it still had her ID, her credit cards, cash, her old glasses and her old plane ticket,” said Katelin’s sister, Gabrielle Akens.

I do not think KA left on her own - by choice, voluntarily - etc.

That is all.

Bumpity bump Miss Katelin. You are definitely not forgotten sweetheart! Even though IMO, I don't think you have gone missing voluntarily, I hold hope that you are safe somewhere.
