If Katelin is missing by choice.... will it be hard for her to come forward with all this attention? I love Websleuths but do sometimes wonder about this....

I have wondered about the same thing. Especially being so young. The perceived embarrassment might be difficult for her to face.

I've often wondered if it would be harder because of new reports (to come back if left by choice).

But I think the awareness created by media and and sites like this outweighs what negative effects there could be. Plus, or wonderful mods keep these reads victim friendly, so if someone is missing by choice and reads here, they should know that people (at least here) are just concerned and not bashing them.

Is there anyway to get back to AZ without a plane? I know I'm grasping at straws.

I sure wish more people shared your concern. There's a huge difference between an expression of positive support with a healthy dose of respect, as opposed to gossip that will embarrass or humiliate a person, and potentially drive him or her further away.

Oh sure there is. She could take Amtrak, Greyhound bus or hitch a ride. She could put an ad up on craigslist for a ride, etc.
Not a good idea for craigslist IMO.

Even if they did trace her cell phone/texts to the area or the mall or metro, that wouldn't prove too much unless there was other physical evidence that proved she was there as well. It could just mean that if someone did abduct her from another location or she never made it out of Spotsylvania they had her phone. Just an opinion, but that could only mean that PHONE traveled that path maybe with someone setting up an alibi by actually traveling the route she would have traveled. Wouldn't it just be easy for a person to turn their cell phones on and off during important locations to ping to sustain an alibi.

So could she possibly of found a different means to VA and is hiding out there? Jmo. I don't know what to think anymore. I'm gone from a abduction from someone she knows, to a stranger or an old friend. To her running off. To now her hiding out. I think I'm going to step away Ms Katelin. I pray you are safe.

By car would work.

Always a good reminder. Taking that one to heart.

I wish there was an easy and "judgement free" way for people to leave their lives and let LE know they are truly safe, even if they don't want to tell family/friends. A hotline they could call in and give a social, birthdate, and maybe some other pertinent factor? I don't know... I don't even think that is applicable to this case, though I could be wrong.

Hoping she is alive, but if not, hoping LE is silent because they're close.

Yes. A huge difference. I remember a case here (that I think has been deleted) where a young woman finished school and left her car in the lot. The police finally made contact through a social media account that she thought was private. They made the announcement that they confirmed contact and that she was safe and did not want to be contacted.

She was from a strict mid-east family. (they also said they would not comment on her marital status) She was 19 and a legal adult.

Sometimes a broken person ends up breaking hearts, but they have a right to seek after their own needs.

MOO

If Katelin texted that she made it to the airport, investigators would know where that text was sent from. If so, then they know more than they are saying. Good for them. I only say that because they always have the interest of the victim in their investigation and she does have rights.

She was not at risk as far as we know.

There is! 1-800-runaway. They provide many supportive resources. Loved ones as well as those who have left can record messages for each other. Another great resource I learned of somewhere here in WS :).

Maybe someday there will be a law making it a crime to be a walk-away Jane or Joe. I would like people to be held accountable for their actions and be responsible to Law Enforcement who are out man hours and money searching for them. Let them walk up to an officer anywhere and report themselves as not missing. They can offer a fingerprint as proof and sign a sworn affidavit to clear it up. Then they are completely free to go. LE can give the news to the people left behind so they are aware of the circumstances and know it was by choice. Case closed.
