VA VA - Katelin Akens, 19, Springfield, 5 Dec 2015 #3

There's so many inconsistencies in the SD's story. If it was him who just helped her walk away from everything, why wouldn't he just tell LE the truth? All the lies he's told makes him really look guilty.

IMHO

My theory is that she confided in the SF what had gone on at the drunken party, and he thought that he could have a bit too, she objected and he during the event, killed her. Or even if she did not confide in him, someone let him know. Many men, think that if women have done it before, they have not right to say no to other men.

I am thinking the same...MOO.

Hmmmmmm. I am not sure how the stepfather is NOT the primary suspect?

Last person to see her
No video of him dropping her off at mall like he said
Her suitcase found very close to his residence
Her phone pings were close to his residence

I tend to think something happened between them that day and he probably was the one who sent the texts and message to her mom and fiance...

What I got out of the Disappeared episode.

Katelin graduated early.

NONE of Katelin's clothes, her phone nor her prized diploma were found with her suitcase. Her wallet, debit cards, toothbrush, phone charger, etc were with the suitcase. The suitcase appeared to have been 'thrown' from a vehicle, it had a broken wheel.
LE did a search by FLEAR(?sp) and went 30 miles downstream searching for her clothes, not one item was ever found.

She visited old friends from high school, a couple, they drank, they invited her to sleep it off at their apartment, things happened, took her back to her mom's house the next morning, LE interviewed them several times, feels they are telling the truth. NO mention of rape or coercion.
According to the male friend, Katelin was despondent over what had happened.

Amber supposedly received a text from Katelin that day that said she wasn't returning because she cheated. (IIRC that is not what came across by Amber's mom)

Step dad said he dropped Katelin off about 1 pm at the JC Penney Store Springfield Mall, LE states there is 2 cameras there, neither Katelin, the step dad nor the Jeep were ever spotted.

LE also requested video from the Metro and other mall cameras.

Step dad sent the text to Katelin's mom at 1:52 pm that he had dropped her off.

Katelin's mom (Lisa) knew Heather in passing only (from each's work).

About 7:15 pm, Lisa received a text from Katelin's phone that she needed time and was with a friend.

At 2:00 pm Lisa receives a text [I'm at the airport. Battery dying so won't be able to text for a bit] THIS by her phone records was when the phone pinged 50 miles away, within 5 miles of where her luggage was found.

Further surprised that the step dad's phone (all his devices) showed he never left his home. And they called his employer, he did NOT go in to work, he had called off. He also never tried to call Katelin after she was 'missing'.

Step dad was cooperative until time for the LDT, when he advised his attorney said no, after that he will not talk with LE. Lisa asked him about it, he told her he had said what he had to say and doesn't have to repeat himself.

LE received a SW and spent 8+ hours searching the house, grounds, swampland and forensic exam of the vehicles. Nothing was found.

LE has not come out and said step dad is POI, just that they know he knows more than he is telling.

LE has the door open for the step dad to come in anytime and give further info, if he helped her 'disappear', if he knows who is hiding her.

LE was able to tell that Katelin was communicating with someone VIA encrypted text/messenger, LE can not get those texts.

Lisa does not feel she is just missing, she feels she would have at least let someone know she was 'ok'.

Katelin's sister feels Katelin possibly met someone online, Katelin went with this person and it didn't end well.

Sorry so out of context. I was doing part by memory and then I rewound the recording.

IMOO, Katelin did not disappear herself. Step dad did. Katelin will be found in that '5' mile radius between his home and the luggage.

Stepdad didn't go to work as planned the day of the disappearance. To me, that's big.

I agree, especially with him lying about it to LE. I could understand if he lied to mom, but for him to lie about it, the n the day K just happen to disappear, just doesn't sit right with me.

Quite a bit of the evidence seems to point to the stepfather. Unfortunately, there seems to be a pattern: I've lost count of how many cases I've followed where a girl was with her stepfather or her mother's boyfriend and was never seen again. I honestly believe that single and divorced women with daughters should not date, period.

How is this not enough to arrest someone?!

His cell pinged near his home when he said he had just dropped her off at mall. Her cell pinged near where her luggage was found, which was near home. He called out of work that day but told her mom that he dropped her off and went to work.

At least not without some extensive background checks. I am fed up with mothers "dating" felons and then being shocked when a baby is shaken to death, stomped, beaten, etc...happens way too often.

O/T some what - The trick when you are a single mom is to date the person for a long long time before introducing him to your children. I was a widowed single mom. My two young children didn't meet anyone I dated for months. The only person they met was one I dated for almost a year. My family met him before my children did and I made sure they approved before my children met him. It wasn't that I didn't trust myself but I did know that I tended to put on blinders when "falling in love." I could handle the heartache of a failed relationship but I didn't want my kids to go through the pain of losing someone again.

Shouldn't all of his lies be enough to get a search warrant of his property?

I think there was a search of his property. I am pretty sure I heard them say last night on the ID special, that they searched and found nothing.
But the problem is that he owns 10 acres. so.....?

There is not enough to take this case to trial, most likely. There is no solid proof that she is not voluntarily missing.

Agreed.

To be very blunt, I think they need a body because they don't have ENOUGH evidence, circumstantial or otherwise, to nail anybody.

I have also found this whole story hinky. I'm not really sure what to believe anymore.

My guess is that if a body is ever found, SF will be in handcuffs pretty quick. MOO

Well I think it'd be nice if people didn't murder other people.
My kids have a stepdad, my husband, & I trust him 110% with my kids, maybe more than I trust their own father with them, simply because my husband lives in the same house, knows their likes/dislikes, moods etc...dad sees them once a month or 2 for 2 days & in his mind they're still 4 & 5 years old & he honestly has no clue how to deal with teenage girls whatsoever.
I think divorced parents just need to do a little more background research & soul searching before making a marriage commitment when they are children involved, daughters AND sons.

It's so wonderful to see discussion again on katelin's thread!
From the beginning I scoffed at step-dads story. I wasn't able to watch the episode, but thanks to the wonderful members here that did, it looks like there is some new info.
The phone pings, the verifying of no sightings of SD vehicle at mall, etc, verifying he didn't go to work and that they did search his house (we all were understandably irate when we thought they hadn't) .
I wish they'd state he's a POI , so we could discuss some other questions I have!
I truly believe that SD harmed her, unfortunately, I can't back up my opinion with why I firmly believe this as I don't want to take a ws vacation LOL
If I remember correctly, it was stated at one time that the reason Katelin wouldn't have been comfortable with taking the metro is because she had anxiety issues.
I'm so hoping that the episode brings in some information to resolve this.

All of this is JMO, MOO and all that jazz.

IIRC, back at the start of this case, there was talk about an earlier incident between Katelin and her stepfather. It was said that stepdad had been charged with physical abuse, once when she was a child. I'd like to know more about that.

I Believe that was stated by Ambers Mom and because she wasn't verified, we're not able to discuss any of the information she had stated.

I'm on mobile so not able to hit the Ty button, so thank you for this! I wasn't able to watch the episode last night!

This had been a crazy case to follow and so much misinformation. I know in the early days the news stated the car was seen at the mall however they couldn't see who was in the car and there were no cameras at the drop off point (I believe this was due to the construction that was ongoing) now it's said according to pings they were never there. Guess that would explain the lack of news coverage in the Springfield area, they knew she was never there.

From Disappeared it seems obvious, without stating it what happened and who did it. Just saddens me that it took this long to get this information out there and "set the record straight".

Also why wasn't her contact with her ex-bf brought up? Are those the hidden messages they were referring to?

My McAfee didn't red flag this, so I am assuming it is safe.

The video is not great nor the sound (could be my pc)
