That you claim all people with similar skin tones hold identical beliefs is racist.

The O.J. Simpson case notwithstanding, black jurors find black defendants guilty every day. In my personal experience on jury panels, black jurors were the least sympathetic to claims that black defendants were unduly disadvantaged and therefore due special considerations.

Some black leaders have articulated a belief that African American celebrities are held to higher standards and punished more harshly when they fail. Whether or not that belief is accurate, rants that begin with "all blacks this" and "all blacks that" aren't going to change anyone's mind.

Personally, I don't agree that Michael Vick deserves leniency. But the NAACP isn't even an elected body, much less the anointed voice of the Great Black Mind Meld. Jumping from an NAACP statement to "all blacks" isn't necessary. Unless, of course, such a statement merely serves to reinforce one's deeply ingrained prejudice.

I'd say poor people don't fare as well in the justice system as wealthy people. And, unfortunately, there are lots of blacks that are living in below poverty conditions, let alone able to hire competant legal help. So I don't think it's race as much as economic advantage that makes the difference in many court cases. Like someone said, there are no rich people on death row. (Scott Peterson is white and somewhat well-off but was an exception by and large.)

agree. celebs and rich folks of all ilk are above the law for the most part. even when they do get some punishment, it's not as much as somebody who is not famous or as well off.

[The dog just died before our very eyes... she described him as "going to sleep".
Oh, it infuriated me.
That dog should not have been put in that position.
/QUOTE]

The woman shouldnt have been put in that spot. Im sure her job isnt pleasant but th dog had been in dog fights, doubt if it ever wouldve been trustworthy. its sad, but you have to be realistic.

How could Michael Vick do this? To animals, himself, friends, family, his wife, his children, friends who look up tp him, etc... and expect better of him.

After the jail time and the apologies and the demands by every one on his behalf for his right to play, I would hope that a governing group would insisit on the following conditions :

Ban for life from dog or any type of animal gambling.

Mick Vick must be responsible for maintainig a rescue home for dogs aand cats where they may live until they are adopted. Vick must fund the entire project himself.

Everymonth, Vick must sponsor a spay and neutering day and will pay for it out of his own pockett.

I think there are just a few ideas to get him started back on the road to recovery....Oh!!!! Pet Cemeteries. I am sure he can handle that for the grieving population.

Honestly, I am furious with the idiots defending Vick. The NAACP calling for the public to forgive Vick? I haven't seen Vick ask for forgiveness nor express remorse. For them to ask sponsors to continue to support him and that the Falcons in particular should take him back? Why would we want him back here in Atlanta when he has done all this damage already? He flipped us the bird not too long ago as it is. He is pond scum. Worse. Then the NAACP said that it was regrettable that Vick wasn't going to get to go to trial, wasn't going to 'get to', for what? He admitted his guilt. UGH! I'm sick of all of it. Just shut up already. Vick is not sorry that he did anything, never has been, he is sorry when he gets caught and forced to apologize. 50+ animals will die soon because of his actions in the next several days I'm sure, never mind how many died through the years. We know of 8 in April and those were because they didn't perform.
I believe in forgiveness but you can't forgive someone who isn't sorry and doesn't even know what they did wrong. He should never be allowed NEAR a dog again. These guys supporting him? Start checking into their backgrounds now and what kind of dogs THEY own,

You took the words right out of my mouth catsmeow. Vick's race doesn't matter. He is just a 🤬🤬🤬🤬 who used the pain of another living creature for his own enjoyment.

I would like to add two things. For those folks who tried to get into New Orleans and surrounding areas for animal rescue during Katrina, dog-fighting is one of the main reasons many unauthorized groups and individuals were turned away. If you were not on an approved list the locals and volunteers had no way of knowing the real purpose for trying to rescue Katrina animals. Many of the dogs rescued from the hurricane would have been taken into the dog-fighting world by groups or individuals pretending to be rescuers but in reality were looking for free dogs. Many of the so-called "pit rescue" people who came in were believed to be dog-fighters. There are many breeds of dogs used in this atrocious habit, not just pits. Plus the smaller "bait" dogs, which are often stolen or gotten from humane societies. (Yes, Katrina rescue included people stealing dogs for bait.)

Secondly, please don't fool yourself into thinking it is an all-black hobby. I live in East Tennessee near the North Carolina line. Our county has only a 2% black population. The "hobby" is rampant in both states, as well as Georgia, and you might be surprised at the number of white people involved, including elected officials. A white law enforcement officer told me this week that in our area he knows of no black people involved in gambling on dog-fighting in our area. Most of the participants are white. This is not true everywhere but it is true in many places.

Please, folks, write your Congress Critters and state officials and demand change and demand that severe penalties be made and that they be carried out across the board. Continue with follow-up to see how your officials are voting and whether any of them are actually taking it upon themselves to act on your demands or requests. If you know people in high places, now's the time to pull some strings.

Vick Likely Will Face More Charges in Va.

A prosecutor in southeastern Virginia who is investigating dogfighting allegations against Michael Vick said yesterday he plans to seek additional state charges against the Atlanta Falcons quarterback and his three co-defendants, but is first awaiting the results of Vick's scheduled guilty plea Monday in federal court.

"My intention is to vindicate the people of the Commonwealth of Virginia and the people of Surry County based on what we believe happened in Surry County," said Gerald G. Poindexter, the commonwealth's attorney in the rural jurisdiction near Vick's home town of Newport News. He said the case "likely will be presented" to a local grand jury on Sept. 25, the next time it meets.

Poindexter said it is "pretty obvious" that violations of Virginia law occurred in the operations of "Bad Newz Kennels," the dogfighting operation allegedly based at a Vick-owned property in Smithfield, Va. Noting that Vick's co-defendants have pleaded guilty to federal charges, he said: "They have admitted dogfighting. That's a state crime. They have admitted killing animals. That's a state crime, and a very serious one." But Poindexter also said in a telephone interview that Vick "has not made those admissions yet" and has not appeared before a judge. Before going forward with state charges, Poindexter added, he must also retrieve other evidence and witness statements that are in the hands of federal authorities. "I'm not going to make promises that I can't fulfill," he said.

A state indictment would be another potential legal blow to Vick, who also faces a possible NFL suspension. He is expected to meet with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell before Goodell decides what punishment the league will impose, sources familiar with the case said yesterday, adding that the meeting hadn't been scheduled yet. A guilty plea by Vick would put him in violation of the NFL's personal conduct policy, which empowers Goodell to fine, suspend or impose a lifetime ban on a player.

I vote for lifetime ban. Let him get a normal job and see how many of his "homeboys" still want to be around him.

I am so sick of "public figures" being bad examples. They get paid so much from a fan base and it's just my humble opinion that they should act more responsibly knowing young kids look up to them.

I hope he gets 2 out of 3, and "suspended" isn't one of them. It's interesting that he killed dogs that didn't perform up to expectations, yet how many times has Michael Vick been guilty of that himself? He is such a disgusting 🤬🤬🤬🤬.

Couldn't agree more. We were just talking about that in my office a little bit ago. Some of these guys could do so much good with a fraction of their money, but yet wish to piss it away by disgusting things such as Vick did.

I honestly think it comes from being, in many cases, uneducated and then having more money than they know what to do with. Such a shame.

I encourage NFL Comissioner Roger Goodell not to waste this prudent, and timely, opportunity, to set a strong example for the rest of the players of the NFL.

Racketeering/gambling deserves at least a lifetime ban. don't you all think?

I encourage the Atlanta Falcons to get as much of the money, given to Michael Vick as a signing bonus, back, as soon as they can. They have to disassociate themselves from Michael Vick, the sooner, the better.

I second that! If he wants a second chance fine, but who said it has to be making millions of dollars and on TV with corporate sponsors? Why can't he have a normal job? He can't go try out for arena football? That's about all he's going to be good for anyways, really all he was ever really worth as he was never a great QB but that is a whole different story. He doesn't 'deserve' another shot at being a millionaire or for anyone to have to invest that kind of money in him. Fact is, he didn't make a 'mistake' a mistake is an 'ooops' he didn't make an 'ooops' he was living a lifestyle, building a friggin' empire on fighting dogs and gambling away their lives, this wasn't a mistake that he fell into. It wasn't an error in judgement, it was something he enjoyed and hoped he wouldn't get caught doing, he used an alias. Just like he used Ron Mexico when he got treated for his STD, another 'mistake'.

People SHOULD be writing their Congress and state representatives and look up your local state dog fighting laws. It isn't an all black hobby, it goes on in college campuses too, scary thing!

I completely agree with you, Buzz! If rumors are correct, there are a lot of football players involved. If the NFL sets a strong example with Michael Vick, it might encourage others to get away from betting on dog fights or being involved in any way. How could the Falcons get some of the bonus signing money back? I would think that is a done deal, and the best that can happen is he doesn't receive another cent from that organization.

It isn't just rumor and it isn't just football. Please, people, write some letters to your federal, state, and local politicians. It WILL do some good. E-mail is good and formally written letters via the USPS are even better. Be specific, be nice, be firm, but please, please do it.

I completely agree with you, DK. I think many of our so-called "racial" problems are in fact problems of economic inequity.

But as you know, race and poverty are historically tied in this country, so it shouldn't surprise us if the two are sometimes confused.

Great and informative post, B! I kind of wish I hadn't read it, but that's not your fault and, anyway, we all need to know this. Very upsetting.

I am so sorry, Nova. Normally I would put a "Disturbing Post" warning in the title but I forgot to do it this time. Frankly, I can no longer work hands-on with dog rescue because of the disturbing emotional side but I can do other behind-the-scene stuff that works. I FIRMLY believe politicians are public servants and we should make them earn their pay (besides, they make more than most of us but probably no where near as much as 🤬🤬🤬🤬 football players).

Not at all, BOESP. Your post wasn't graphic and, anyway, I always read posts with warnings on them.

With your post, I just finally realized how widespread dog-fighting is. I preferred thinking of it as something that had basically died out before the Civil War. Obviously, not so. :(
