Cmon....Whoopi is known for her politicial views....I'm sure Barbara knew that when she hired her (kinda like Rosie)....This doesn't surprise me; and I'm sure it doesn't surprise Barabara.

I'm not sure what defending Vick has to do with politics? From what I remember, Whoopi is a republican. However, in most instances, I think Black trumps political affiliation.

All I'm saying is what Whoopi said didn't surprise me...I think she is very similiar to Rosie....

I think she's very outspoken. Check this out from tmz.com. I don't know who this guy is, but I think he clearly represents how black people (not all, but most) feel about these charges:

The Celebs for Michael Vick Club -- a short list -- has a new member: "Showgirls" star Glenn Plummer.

Plummer launched into a passionate defense of the disgraced footballer outside of Les Deux last night. "S**t, ni***s been fighting dogs since we were born!" Way to represent?

He then went on to explain that there's "a million people" fighting dogs, and that, "They catch Michael Vick and they want to put him on the spotlight, you know what I'm sayin'? Go find out who REALLY doing it!"

Yeah, well people and (especially) children aren't exposed to those million other people fighting dogs.....amazing how people can defend something so hideous!!! You're right Jeana ...what a:loser: :loser: !!!

But as far as Whoopi....I'm sure Barbara knew how outspoken she was before hiring her...don't you think????

Oh yeah, I absolutely do think Barbara knew!! I think that she's going to be a great addition to the show. I never watched the show while Rosie was on it because I don't like her, but I definately will watch with Whoopie on it.

Back to the Vick thing. I'm just sick and saddened, actually, that so many people would condone this sort of thing simply because they feel it necessary to support an African American. If I were black I would be especially angry at the supporters because there are so many hard working, decent, well spoken, law abiding black role models and heros out there, yet so many seem to focus their attention (and their love) on those who give the race a bad name.

That's what I meant by saying Whoopi and Vick reinforce a negative stereotype. For them to act like that is about as insulting as one can get. They also whine and don't take responsibility for their own actions because they prefer to wimp-out and say "my culture made me do it." If using race as an excuse for malignant behavior is supposed to impress us with some lesson of life, I've missed the point.

Dogfighting is real common here but that doesn excuse the things he did. So ridiculous.

Absolutely!!!

There are many things done in the past but that doesn't mean we should continue to do them and keep repeating the mistakes.
I wonder if Whoopie thinks it's ok how many women and children are horribly tortured even now because it's their "culture"
Someone needs to inform a few people that times have changed and we're not stuck in a backwoods culture. Dogfighting in America is against the law, Vick broke the law and he needs to pay the price. To me it's not a black or white thing, there are white dog fighters also and they need to be arrested to! Every rotten dirty one of them!

Glad to hear this! We live on the Virginia-Tennessee-North Carolina border. At least Virginia does the right thing. Our Tennessee House Rep for our district was one of only a very few who would not vote for strengthening the Federal laws involving interstate trafficking in fighting dogs.

Hats of to Virginia. Hopefully, our Rep, David Davis, won't get re-elected since he has failed to take a stand against this huge interstate business.

Falcons' QB Michael Vick, 3 co-defendants indicted on state charges related to dogfighting

SUSSEX, Va. (AP) -- Michael Vick and three co-defendants were indicted by a grand jury Tuesday on state charges related to a dogfighting ring operated on Vick's Virginia property. Vick, who already pleaded guilty in federal court to a dogfighting conspiracy charge and is awaiting sentencing on Dec. 10, was indicted for beating or killing or causing dogs to fight other dogs and engaging in or promoting dogfighting.

The grand jury passed on indicting the Atlanta Falcons quarterback and two co-defendants on eight counts of animal cruelty, which would have exposed them to as many as 40 years in prison if convicted. Any animal cruelty charge in Virginia is punishable by up to five years in prison. And in a written plea for the federal case, Vick admitted helping kill six to eight dogs at the Surry County property. Similarly, the three co-defendants in the case have admitted their involvement and detailed what they claim was Vick's role. For county law enforcement officials who started the investigation with a raid on Vick's property in late April, those signed statements provided ample evidence to support further prosecution.

Surry County Commonwealth's Attorney Gerald G. Poindexter asked that the four be arraigned Oct. 3 and requested that each be released on a $50,000 personal recognizance bond. None of the defendants nor their lawyers were in court. The charges are the first leveled against Vick in the county where he built a home on 15 acres that was the base of the dogfighting operation.

A defense attorney who was at the courthouse Tuesday said he was "befuddled" when he learned the grand jury had passed on indicting Vick and the others on animal cruelty charges. "There's something going on here that I don't understand," said Joe Pennington, a Norfolk defense attorney who was at the courthouse. "The grand jury is generally regarded by defense attorneys as a rubber stamp."

This is why I am glad the Feds got involved. The locals couldn't provide justice. Passing on animal cruelty is ridiculous.

I'm totally confused. The headline says they were indicted and later in the article it says they will be arraigned on October 3 but the article also says Grand Jury passed on indicting them.

What really happened????? Are they accountable for the dog fighting or some animal cruelty or nothing????

Michael Vick was indicted for beating or killing or causing dogs to fight other dogs and engaging in or promoting dogfighting. Somehow, the Grand Jury passed on inditing him on eight counts of animal cruelty.

I just don't understand their thinking.

Canadian bank demands $2 million in lawsuit against Michael Vick

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (AP) -- Royal Bank of Canada has sued suspended Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick for more than $2.3 million. The bank argued that his guilty plea to federal dogfighting charges and the resulting impact on his career have prevented him from repaying a loan.

Vick borrowed $2.5 million in January with plans to use the money for real estate investments, Royal Bank of Canada said in the lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court in Newport News on Thursday. The loan's terms specify that any employment change negatively impacting Vick's income constitutes a default on the loan, according to the lawsuit. Last month, Vick pleaded guilty to bankrolling a dogfighting ring at a property he owned in Surry County, near his hometown of Newport News.

Vick faces up to five years in prison when he is sentenced in December, has been indefinitely suspended without pay and has lost all his major sponsors, including Nike. On Tuesday, he was indicted on state charges related to dogfighting.

"The criminal charges, and resulting impact on the Defendant's employment ... materially affect his ability to repay the Term Note," the bank said in the lawsuit. The bank is demanding $2,313,694.37, plus $499 in interest per day, starting Sept. 19, as well as attorney's fees. Vick's attorneys did not immediately return phone messages Tuesday.
