Raced home from my doctor appointment, knowing the verdict would be read while I was gone. Wrong. Glad they haven't hung yet.

I'm absolutely perplexed why there was a secret hearing. AZL - any ideas?

That's the problem with secret hearings--you don't know what they're about. I can't think of any legitimate reason for a secret hearing at this stage, but who knows.

Right, not about ethics, but more importantly about constitutional rights. I really just don't understand how something like that would happen because I ave never heard of anything like this.

What happens when a judge messes up on constitutional issues is that someone appeals her rulings and the appellate courts explain that part of the constitution to her.

First, you'll have to tell us what the heck 21:36 pm is. Just kidding, it's almost 4:45 in the afternoon Eastern Time in GA-southeastern USA where I live. Arizona is two hours earlier, so 2:45 p.m. there.

Me neither. I've not posted much on this forum though have followed the trial from almost the start. I'm personally against the DP in all cases for a number of reasons but that doesn't mean I don't believe in lock em and throw away the key for the worst offenders, of which JA is one IMO. Paradoxically, I would sort of like her to get the DP as I think it would never be implemented, I detest the lies she has told about the victim to try and save her own skin (particularly the pedophilia ones) and also because it would drive them even crazier over at JAII. I know - it's confusing and I am confused! But I do feel that in cases like this an anti-DP stance is not going to be popular here, but so be it. Perhaps it may also have something to do with the fact I live in an a non-DP country where there is no taste for reinstating it. Anyway, all just MO. Now I'll let you get back to your lunch Mrs Bluth.

JA's family opted out during her super secret testimony; JSS stated clearly during the hearing in chambers that the Arias family could attend.

It was in the transcripts of the meeting in the judges chambers when she ruled that Jodi could testify in a closed court room. The ruling stated who could be there and her family was included.

FTR, when JSS said they could be there, it was in her 1st ruling where she ruled the public would be sent to the overflow room. Then she heard the DT & JA objections to that & even more demands, with JA thinking no one should ever know what she said. After that, JSS then ruled although she thought this was manipulation, she'd close it completely (did say the victim's family would stay though).

The Court has considered and suggested other alternatives to closing the courtroom; however, the witness has refused to participate unless the courtroom is closed during his or her testimony.

It is ordered closing the courtroom for the testimony of this witness. The family of the victim may remain in the courtroom for the testimony. The testimony of the witness will be video recorded by FTR. The Court will consider unsealing the testimony of this witness or a redacted portion of that testimony after the jury has reached a verdict. All right.

Since a civil attorney was with the Alexanders I do not think that the recent activity in the courtroom has anything at all to do with the jury.

I agree, and think the idea that it may have to do with victim's rights may be right. IIRC someone early today tweeted that the victim's advocate was there with Steven...

Right. It does not make sense. Makes no sense whatsoever. There's no reason a public trial should be this secretive.

If we were dealing with national security I could understand. There is ZERO legitimate reason to hold a secret trial. ZERO.

I get that you do. But at SOME point a line can be crossed and when the 1st amendment is not being upheld action must be taken for the people. I just don't know who would carry that out or how it would get carried out or at what point. I am truly trying to learn.....wondering what the process would be.

I do not live in Arizona, but I don't think she should be! I think she's a good judge.

I agree...and I really wish the media would keep their distance or just leave him alone completely, don't even report much about him. Let him have his "alone" time.
I worry about him.

ITA ... The Alexanders are not public figures or celebrities. They are normal everyday people just like us. Not only do they have to deal with the vicious slaughter of their beloved brother and an unfair circus trial, they now find themselves in a fish bowl where their every movement or facial expression is reported and scrutinized. I wish the media would just leave them alone.

Isn't the point of a dynamite charge to nudge them back to deliberating, to not give up?

Maybe that is what is going on in the jury room.
