WA - Cascade Mall, 5 fatalities, Burlington, 23 Sept 2016 *Arrest*

The make up counter is in the center of the store. It's actually a very small Macy's as in that mall the Women's Macy's is one store, and the Men's and Home Macy's is clear across the mall and completely separate (very unusual, when I first moved here I thought that was so weird). So the make up counter being in the center makes it close to both the outside exit and the mall exit.

I explored the Champs Sports link I posted earlier a little more. I didn't find a way someone could order a hunting rifle through Champs and then pick it up at Champs. Instead, I found a directory of gun dealers in Burlington. The closest one to Cascade Mall, that I could see, is Holiday Sports. Again, Google maps show it just over a mile away from the mall, but that's taking an indirect route by foot. Still, it would take him more than 10 minutes to leave, buy a rifle and then return by foot. I think he likely had a car and drove to Holiday Sports and purchased the rifle (maybe had pre-ordered it, if that's possible) before returning to the mall. He was probably gone by the time 1st responders arrived on the scene.

ETA: Here is the link I'm speaking of: http://www.americanfirearms.org/bus...ields[14]=Burlington&listingfields[15]=Skagit

I found the link when I Googled Champs Sports earlier and when I clicked on the business website link, it took me to the Champs Sports website. But, I think it's just a directory listing. There's also a link to Holiday Sports' website under the gun dealer listing.

Humm isn't that interesting - like this joint aint always - (!) my take of the in and out of the mall/store was solely , he knew he watned to kill them, wanted to make sure they were where the were, ran out gRAbbed his gun, walked in, shot his targets, set the gun down , and left !!

Welcome to WS! Thank you so much for pitching in.

Great to read your post, and that more may be known, because if the perp didn't know the poor unsuspecting victims and it was about the location, I would've guessed a former employee or a person in disguise, from the way out there theory side of things. Having tweaked the face for hours, I could find no contours of cheek bones, etc, or much definition beyond the hint of defined lips and a chin, then the eyes, but no eyebrows. I'm used to faces showing more specifics, especially pictured relatively clearly. I don't think this could've been the only time this person was in the Mall, seems well planned.

:welcome5:

Tis is just my take - no worries - he set his gun down and left - no want ti kill anyone else than his family members

just my sense --

What I can never understand is the terrible quality of these cameras. Has nothing better been invented yet?

So either he came into the mall earlier with the gun and hid it somewhere or he worked at the mall and brought it in and hid it at some point or someone else brought it in for him.

I would exclude the second one because if he worked there someone would have identified him already.

So where did he go in those 10 minutes?

I think if he did not drive he hid the gun in bush by the door -- if he drove or was drove in the gun in the car.

He wanted to confim where they were - so he could just come , shoot family members and leave

Interesting! Our (Myrtle Beach SC) Belk department store is separated like that at one of our malls. The women's department is in one store and everything else is in the other. It's annoying because I always forget which store is which. I've never seen a similar store separation like that anywhere else either, so it's interesting to learn that we're not alone!

Inside the store takes me more targeted!

There are actually two Macy stores in THAT mall!! Weird huh?

I'm just completely shocked at the lack of national news coverage on this shooting.
Is it because it's the weekend?

It's not unusual to have a Macy's Men's separate from Macy's Women's out here in Cali. I guess that's how it's there in Skagit too. I fell asleep with my :earson: in the wee hours of the morning and missed the presser. I can attest that LE worked diligently throughout the night clearing the mall.

I'm off to catch up the thread (apologies I'm reading the thread backwards)

IIRC, in one of the pressers LE stated he headed on foot toward/across I-5 so I guess he didn't drive. He may have driven to the mall initially, and then parked somewhere across I-5 before returning to the mall with the rifle.

I think Mrs. SlickRick confirmed from local reports that one victim was his GF/ex-GF. If she worked at Macy's and he wasn't sure which one, that would make sense why he would go in initially to scout out which Macy's she worked at before taking in his gun.

So why not just kill them at home?

I'm confused! If they know one victim was the perp's girlfriend, how do they not know who the perp is??

Help me understand!

Regarding the tattoo, my only reason for mentioning it is that sometimes it appears and in other photos it doesn't. And if you look closely at other areas of the photos you can find areas that have been digitally altered (such as the jaw in one picture.) so the pictures aren't useful for identification. To test this look for square and rectangular areas that have been blurred in the photo.

Do we know that he hasn't been ID'd by now? LE may know who he is at this point, but just haven't located him.

Sarai Lara was the youngest of the victims, at 16. The Mount Vernon High School sophomore had survived cancer as a young girl, and was a happy, responsible, driven student, her mother said Saturday evening.

Evangelina Lara said she was shopping at the mall with Sarai and her younger sister, but they split up to different stores. Sarai went to Macy’s looking for pants, her mother said through a translator. News of the shooting spread through the mall, and Lara tried to get to her daughter but was blocked from Macy’s.

The next seven hours were filled with anxiety and dread, she said, until it was confirmed at 2 a.m. Saturday that her daughter was dead. She said nobody in the family recognizes the shooter in photos handed out by police.

Someone on another forum is saying the suspect is in custody in Seattle---anyone else seeing that anywhere?

Another victim is believed by her family to be Shayla Martin, a 52-year-old from Mount Vernon who worked as a make-up artist at Macy’s. Martin’s sister, Karen Van Horn, declined to talk Saturday evening.
Police said the suspect appeared to be a Hispanic male in his late teens to mid-20s with a close-shaved haircut. He used a long gun similar to a hunting rifle, Francis said. He was wearing a black short-sleeved shirt and black shorts. Police released a security-footage photo of him Friday night.
“I don’t know what his motivations were,” Mount Vernon Police Department Lt. Chris Cammock, commander of the Skagit Multi-Agency Response Team (SMART), said at a Saturday morning news conference. “But I certainly intend to find out.” He was last seen walking west toward Interstate 5 about 7 p.m. Friday.
Asked why authorities believe the gunman may be Hispanic, Cammock said the description was based on the surveillance photos and the man’s dark hair. He acknowledged “photos aren’t exact replicas.”
