Dream deferred: What do we do when life isn't all we thought it would be?
Posted By Rachel Dolezal on Mon, Sep 15, 2014 at 4:50 PM

"My realization of camaraderie in the struggle was not the “misery loves company” sort. No, I actually began thinking that there must be a solution for the other 30-40-50-somethings in this area who are not exactly stoked about how their professional and personal lives have materialized in God’s country.

You see, I was an award-winning artist at the break-point in my career when I moved to … Idaho. As you might guess, gravity didn’t carry me up from there. A failed marriage and subsequent custody order decided that this is where I would live for the next 15 years. Sure, I’ve made what I could of a secondary career and might be what some would call a success, but I still feel the sadness resurface when I think of lost momentum and the years I’ve struggled back at square one to re-launch into something amazing. ..."

I predict a resignation Monday.

I don't think she will resign on Monday. I think she is rallying support and is going to claim none of this is affecting her job.

Where do we go from here? People who have not felt the lash of centuries of oppression beating down on their backs tell us to keep calm and carry on. What insanity makes those in power imagine they have any idea what the logical response should be? What psychosis perpetuates the myth that if we listen to “both sides,” we will somehow find the truth, as if the hunter and the hunted, the dead and the living, could be consulted with a fair and even outcome.

When my youngest son was 5 years old, an adult once asked him what he wanted to be when he grew up. He said, “A dog.” Laughing, the person said, “Oh, you mean you want to be a veterinarian?” “No,” he said, “I want to be a dog, because dogs have a life without worry.” The adult said, “Well, you know that’s not possible for you to be a dog.” Looking very serious, my son said, “Well, my mom said I can be anything I want to be when I grow up, and I think a lot of dogs have it easier than a lot of people.” Now that my son is 13, I sit him down to remind him of his early insights and, amid a swell of emotion, I tell him that, in America, a black 16-year-old who killed a dog was sentenced this summer to 23 years in prison, while a white police officer who was nearly 30 years old will not even face charges for killing a black teenager.

And, as the answers and questions blur together, I tell him that I cannot talk anymore about history or courts or reasons on this night. For a moment, I just need to hold him without words.

This woman's children are going to have a hot mess to sort out in their heads.

After she's represented all the white people as hunters who are out to get the black kids, then he's going to find out that mom is one of them.

The adopted brother should already know, though.

I feel very sorry for her son. He is her biological son. He is half white. I am sure that he used to see his mother's family when bhe was a young child. Now he is cut off from the 'white' part of her family. And she completely denies and reviles her own 'whiteness.' What is this doing to her poor son? He must be very confused.

I loved the way he explained the 'hate crime' to the cops who investigated. A confused middle class normal white couple got lost and came into the wrong door when dog sitting for a friend. He sounds like a smart kid. He could tell the difference between The Aryan Nation sending two ****gs over to scare them, and two house sitters getting confused. Too bad his mom cannot.

Allegations levied by Dolezal were also the focus of a 22 June 2010 Spokesman-Review article titled “Unfurling banners of racial tolerance.” That piece referenced Dolezal’s 16-year-old brother and eight-year-old son with the phrase “both of whom are black.” (An 11 June 2015 BuzzFeed article was among several asserting that Dolezal had begun to claim biological parentage for one or more of her adopted black siblings, but that claim has yet to be fully substantiated.)

Dolezal’s subsequent resignation from her position at the Human Rights Education Institute in Coeur d’Alene was also the subject of a 28 July 2010 Spokesman-Review article. In that report, Dolezal described her resignation as “forced … for all intents in purposes,” hinting that she was passed over for a promotion due to unspecified discrimination:

Dolezal said she wrote the institute’s board of directors two weeks ago seeking to be named executive director. She also submitted her letter of resignation, contingent on the board refusing her promotion … Instead of promoting Dolezal, the board named its new development director Dan Lepow as executive director and accepted Dolezal’s resignation.

The Coeur d’Alene Press reported that Dolezal said she was the target of discrimination, but Dolezal declined to discuss this allegation with The Spokesman-Review.

[Board president Marilyn] Muehlbach said Dolezal’s allegations came as a surprise.
“That’s nothing we talked about at all,” Muehlbach said.

There's also an old photo of her, apparently from before her transracialisation

She didn’t look the way she looks now at all in school, that’s why when I initially saw the story I didn’t recognize her!” Washington told Jezebel. “She looks about three shades darker.”

While at Howard, Washington took an experimental studio course with Dolezal who was an MFA student-teacher at that time.

“She was a good teacher and never came off as ‘trying’ to be black to me,” said Washington. “She was Rachel, a white woman who could paint really well. She painted Black people but, being at Howard, I saw it as her painting the world around her. No one asked about her ethnicity because we didn’t need to. No one assumed she was black.”

I'm sure that people are trying to track down her ex-husband to get his take on this.

As far as her parents knowing and not saying anything.....I'm thinking that there have been politicians (VA head Robert McDonald who lied about being in special forces) who have been caught embellishing their past. The family members in those situations didn't come forward to say the person was lying. Maybe her family didn't think the lie was really hurting anyone and they didn't want to antagonize her further especially since her brother has been living with her.

At the very least, wouldn't she be suspended, or told to take a leave of absence while they sort out the situation?

But Larry Dolezal said that Izaiah is actually Rachel’s adopted brother.

About five years ago, when Izaiah was 16, he opted to go live with Rachel, Larry Dolezal said, at which time she obtained guardianship. Still, he told BuzzFeed News that he and his wife, Ruthanne, remain Izaiah’s legal parents.

Larry and Ruthanne eventually lost contact with Izaiah, and on Thursday did not know where he was. Larry added that Thursday is Izaiah’s 21st birthday.

I think she thinks she doesn't have the problem: we have the problem.

Commenter on the Snopes link above refers to her as a "Special Snowflake Social Justice Warrior" - and that, I think, is the best descriptor ever!

The incredible irony here is that if she is fired or steps down from her position with NAACP, it will be because of the effects of her race as she has portrayed them. I can't even wrap my head around that.

I'm sure there's a discrimination lawsuit in there somewhere.

Equally incredibly, she has damaged the social activism of black women, who she champions. She has made a mockery of her career activism in imposter "blackface".

She didn't need to do any of this to be an activist for racial and social causes. But it wasn't good enough to just be who she is. The message she sent is that the only way she could be an activist is to be an imposter-- a race imposter. THAT is the message she sent to her brother and kid/s. I feel so sorry for her brother and kid/s.

Man, this woman is messed up in the head. IMO.

How can we know? But to me, even with the hair and the tan, she looked Caucasian.

So what does she do now, wash the color off her face let her blonde hair down and disappear into a new city? The effort she put into this ruse and now that it's been revealed she may harm herself. Jmo

ciao

I think she is going to go for being "transracial." She thinks she is black therefore she is.

"She also tweeted a picture of herself next to a picture of Caitlyn Jenner, with the caption “who are you to decide what is right for me?”"
