Shutterfly--I had no idea so I cheated:

http://en.allexperts.com/q/First-Aid-995/gunshot-wounds-look-bad.htm

Might want to bookmark this, it's quite helpful for the layperson.

"In short, if a patient with an acute (severe;life threatening) wound doesn't receive emergency intervention in a trauma center (an ER with a trauma team and trauma room that can be ready to operate on a patient in a matter of minutes) in 60 minutes or less, their chances of survival decrease dramatically."

Don't just read the snippet. Check out the whole thing. It was written by a medical person for an author.

That article is pretty generic. It all depends on where he was hit exactly and whether any organs were hit. Example, if hit on the outer edges of the abdomen, if the bullet is a through and through it would be painful, it would bleed quite a bit, but wouldn't be life threatening unless it got infected if no organs are hit. Same thing if the shot hit a rib and was deflected out of the body if it doesn't hit any organs. With both he could probably motivate on his own and capable of thinking. A belly shot where the liver or spleen are hit would bleed out quickly. A hit to the kidneys would be debilitating and would be fatal if not treated, but would probably take days. A hit to the stomach or intestines would be fatal eventually, would be very debilitating. But it would take several hours or even a couple of days before it became fatal, as long as the bleeding is under control. But unconciousness might be a problem. If shot higher up, if the lung was hit he could have a collapased lung, which means trouble breathing. Not only would he not be able to walk on his own they would interfere with thinking with the major injuries. A hit to a major artery or vein would have killed him in minutes. A graze wound would be painful, but not hard to control bleeding and wouldn't likely be fatal even without treatment.

I suspect that his wound probably isn't real serious. He has been moving around, making plans and following through too much for that.

SunnieRN am I pretty close on this?

Being the mother of five 20-something black sons (none of whom drive) and living in the Northwest, that makes me sick to my stomach. Let's hope our young men of color can stay calm and collected in the face of such an indignity.

Very right on, except I believe a wound to the kidneys would be fatal more quickly than your estimate as they filter blood at great rates, like your liver does. The end result of that filtration is urine.

What do the kidneys do?

The kidneys are bean-shaped organs, each about the size of a fist. They are located near the middle of the back, just below the rib cage, one on each side of the spine. The kidneys are sophisticated reprocessing machines. Every day, a person’s kidneys process about 200 quarts of blood to sift out about 2 quarts of waste products and extra water. The wastes and extra water become urine, which flows to the bladder through tubes called ureters. The bladder stores urine until releasing it through urination.

As I didn't know how many quarts of blood they processed a day.

I pray your sons will be safe throughout this and that the situation will stay true to what it is and who is responsible!!

How is this man staying in touch with family members and associates? Was everything staged (doubtful) or are they in re-active mode? Can't LE intercept some calls? I don't get how he'd pulling all this off while not feeling so great. I also doubt that this is just family helping out. I think we're going to learn that he's got some sort of connection somewhere.

Sunny--Will he die from this gunshot IYO? Will he just slow down and go into shock?

Wish they would tell white people the same!!!

Don't take it too much to heart Missizzy. If I had a son in that area, I would be telling him to be cautious no matter what his race. With 4 brother officers dead, most LE in that area will attempt to be professional, but they could understandably be a little more trigger happy no matter what race they were facing.

Clemmons has a previous address in Bentonville Arkansas. Also in Bentonville I found several people sharing both his last name, and the last name which matches the property owner who's house LE sat on for 10 hours. Several of those listed in Bentonville are related.

I can't post the link because they aren't invoved...but I used the following sites..

www.ussearch.com
www.whitepages.com
www.googleearth.com
http://www5.kingcounty.gov (parcel viewer)

I read that it's believed he may be on his way to Arkansas.....I'd bet on Bentonville.

Anyone care to venture a guess and speculate as to how long it would take the infection from an improperly treated gunshot wound to kill someone?

Hi Shutterfly, I would say 3 days. I watch Dr G whenever I can but that is just a guess.

Thanks Sunnie, Isn't infection mainly a problem when the bullet stays inside the body? If it were an in and out he might heal faster with basic medical attention, or whiskey poured into the holes. If it opened up his intestines or hit a major organ he would be in a bad way and certainly not be able to travel now, right?

Has anyone heard any late news?

This may sound stupid..but it's 4:15am here and I can't sleep knowing this guy is on the loose. I don't know why this case is effecting me more than others but it is.

There really is no point to this post. My husband is just out of town, kids are in bed, I'm lonely..and my mind is wandering back to those poor families tonight who's heroic spouses were just killed at the hands of a complete idiot..who is still on the run.

My prayers go out to the victims families and friends. May God be with you.

Manhunt Targets Family, Friends Of Suspected Police Killer
Updated: 1:03 am PST December 1, 2009

SEATTLE -- Police all over the state are hunting for Maurice Clemmons, the fugitive wanted in Sunday's fatal shooting of four Lakewood police officers at a Parkland coffee shop.

Police and SWAT teams busted into a Renton duplex Monday evening where Clemmons' niece lives.

Destiny Hinton told KIRO 7 in an exclusive interview that she hasn't seen her uncle in at least a month.

Hinton says police were searching the wrong place when they broke a window and burst into her neighbor's apartment.

Video shown on KIRO 7 shows broken furniture, glass, and various items strewn across the floor inside the apartment.

KIRO 7 Eyewitness News reporter Deborah Horne watched officers tow a car away from the scene.

Pierce County Sheriff's Department spokesman Ed Troyer says a network of family and friends is helping Clemmons hide.

KIRO 7 Eyewitness News reporter Kevin McCarty reported on how Clemmons' associates may be trying to throw investigators off his trail. See full story.

Troyer says they've provided him money, places to stay, and done things to distract law enforcement.

Relatives that spoke to KIRO 7 deny these accusations.

You're not alone. Every time the dog barks I think I'm coming out of my chair....and I'm a lot closer to you than I am to Washington state. I suppose it has a lot do do with the realization that with criminals being released like they are, you're not safe anywhere anymore.

I can not believe these relatives have provided so much support for a wanted felon and cop murderer. I was so glad to hear that LE will have no problem charging them when the time comes.

I know there are some cases that draw me in more than others, and often I have no idea why. I, like many of you, have stayed glued to the computer and TV hoping to hear this perp has been arrested.

  • #656
I worry, with the time that has gone by and the support MC has received, that he may not even be in the state anymore. I hate to even type those words, but the thoughts are crossing my mind more frequently.

I have no way of knowing, without knowing the location and type of wound MissIzzy. I'm sorry. I find it doubtful that it is a major wound, with the traveling and the amount of time that has transpired, but one can hope!!

Thanks Sunnie, Isn't infection mainly a problem when the bullet stays inside the body? If it were an in and out he might heal faster with basic medical attention, or whiskey poured into the holes. Infection can occur in any wound Scandi. A lot of people who have surgery end up with infections. That is in spite of antibiotics (usually given profhelactically prior to surgery) and usually given for 48 hours after. It is recomended that you take a shower twice, with antibacterial liquid soap prior to surgery also. So, if people take all of these precautions and still get infections, it isn't a stretch of the imagination to assume that a gunshot would has the chance to become infected.

There is an increased chance of infection if the wound (even if not fatal), hits the bowel and ruptures it. That means waste can leak into the bowel cavity from the bowels, which is sometimes fatal, over a period of time.

The bullet can also be a source of infection as it is fired from a weapon, usually containing oil from the gun. It has been touched (numerous times I am sure). Bottom line, until we know the location and extent of the wound, we wont know.
