I hadn't seen this info on little Amina's condition:

Warrant issued for mother of boy who accidentally shot girl at Bremerton school
March 5, 2012

"....Amina Bowman is recovering at Harborview Medican Center in Seattle, where she has undergone at least five surgeries. A family attorney said the bullet shattered the girls’ elbow and went into her abdomen, penetrating her liver, pancreas and intestines. Doctors have said the bullet remains lodged near her spine and probably can’t be removed...."

Note: This article identifies the mother as Jamie Lee Passmore.

(snip)

In May 1995, Bauer, with his son in the car, was followed home by a 26-year-old man, whose wife was in the car with him.

The two men got into a physical confrontation; Bauer told jurors he acted in self-defense when he pulled a gun and fired 16 shots, killing the 26-year-old. The man was hit eight times and died. He was acquitted.

Chaffin was convicted of forgery and delivery of marijuana, both felonies, in January 2007, according to court documents. She'd been arrested in 2005 for trying to pass a stolen check; in 2006, West Sound Narcotics Enforcement Team detectives used confidential informants to purchase marijuana from her and build a case. She pleaded guilty to both crimes and was sentenced to 10 days in jail. Gee, a whole 10 days.

And:

"...She [the mother] also was arrested in July 2005 by the Bremerton police's special operations group, when methamphetamine was found in a Galyan Drive home in which police said she lived. The charge was later amended to use of drug paraphernalia, a misdemeanor, and she received a day in jail after pleading guilty..."

And:

"...When detectives searched the home shared by Bauer and Passmore, they allegedly found a loaded 9mm pistol sitting on a desk next to a computer and a loaded 12 gauge shotgun leaning on the wall next to the nightstand...."

Aren't felons prohibited from owning guns? Hmmm. And as far as I can tell, the mom and boyfriend are still not apprehended. In reading the comments, it sounds like they are traveling out of state. I see some connections to Florida for the mom. I think this woman needs to be locked up...now!!

Police believe the boy got the gun during a weekend visit with his mother, Jamie Lee Chaffin.

According to court documents, Chaffin has been convicted of forgery and drug crimes. As a felon, her right to own a firearm was revoked.

Both parents relinquished custody of the boy and his two sisters to his paternal grandmother. She died shortly after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2010, and the boy's uncle Patrick Cochran was granted custody.

BBM - This is what I was talking about in an earlier post. BOTH parents gave up custoday. After grandma died, the uncle got custody, but did anyone know the dad was living with him? If his rights were relinqueshed, should he have been living there? With what looks like to be a violent nature - I would check into daddy too. There was a reason the boy wanted to run away. Now he is back with dad under house arrest.

Maybe I've got an overactive imagination - but something else is up with this boy. No, he shouldnt have brought the gun to school and I'm sure he knew better. I dont think his intentions were to harm anyone at that school. I just have this feeling it has more to do more with his home life.

Yea, letter of apology is really going to do wonders here, considering the victim had multiple organs injured by the bullet and bullet is still stuck near her spine.

And 48 hours (HOURS!!) of therapy??? I hardly think that this amount of therapy will even scratch the surface of the young boy's challenges and issues.

Boy, 9, charged in shooting may testify against mom
March 6, 2012

"A 9-year-old boy charged in the accidental shooting of a classmate with a gun he said he brought to school to fend off bullies has agreed to testify against his mother on weapons offenses as part of a deal with prosecutors, his lawyer said on Tuesday. Police in Bremerton, Washington, where the shooting took place, have said the boy's mother and her boyfriend were to blame for leaving the handgun in question unattended and easily accessible for her son to take...."

Mom didn't notice the gun was gone?
Assuming he left her place Sunday, we get to Wednesday and no one is aware a loaded gun is missing? Tells me everything I need to know about "mom".

If the parents of the girl who shot are okay with the prosecutor's probation deal than I am okay with it too. He needs intervention though. Unstable family, drug use, bullying issues at school, he felt the need to bring a gun and he wants to run away. He could have easily shot himself.

He isn't sitting there with a blank expression, like he doesn't care. He has empathy. Get him into an intensive therapy program.

This is a pivotal moment in his life.
If we can't help a nine year.... then somebody stop the ride. I want off.

And why did mom and her boyfriend apparently leave the state--immediately after the shooting? Where are they?

Isn't that rather odd that he has already been sentenced when the victim isn't even out of the hospital? I find that incredibly strange. I am okay with the sentence because I don't think he ever meant to hurt anybody and the gun went off accidentally. However, I still feel the sentencing is premature.

I am assuming they are on the lam, knowing they are going to be arrested. Undoubtedly they have seen the news and know warrants have been issued for them.

Yea, letter of apology is really going to do wonders here, considering the victim had multiple organs injured by the bullet and bullet is still stuck near her spine.

There is nothing he can do to reverse the injuries.
So no, an apology will not "do wonders", but it will teach him that he has to face the ones he has hurt.

Writing apology letters is a form of therapy. It's used all the time.
By adults and children.

Apologies never erase damage done. NEVER

Would you rather he not apologize?

The couple is currently in Nevada at a NASCAR event.

He's not allowed to have contact with his mother or her boyfriend, who police plan to arrest when they return home from their NASCAR trip later this month.

I love me some NASCAR but COME ON!!!!
They are off having a grand ole time on a NASCAR trip while her son has been in so much trouble because THEY left a gun out??? Are you kidding me??????

That tells you what kind of a mom this little boy has.

I don't care one way or the other whether he apologizes or not. The damage to the victim is done and can not be undone.

Exactly.

So, something that could help and not hurt should be welcomed IMO.

That poor little girl has been violently injured. No doubt about that. She needs prayer and love. Poor baby. I can't imagine what she and her family are going through.

But having a loving heart and caring about BOTH children seems to be a lot more instrumental than turning one's back on this little boy who is damaged also.

His actions were horrible. But he can't just be thrown away. He needs help and compassion too.

I personally feel that if the letter seems sincere on the boys part and they get a sense of his great sorrow, it will have meaning to the parents and little girl. Sometimes, saying your sorry doesn't heal the wound, but it helps heal the heart.

She's at a NASCAR event while her child endures the most horrific weeks of his life?? If authorities know where the mother and her boyfriend are, why on earth can't they be arrested or ordered to return home immediately?

That's what I was thinking!
They are just going to let her enjoy her vacation?
That seems unreal to me.

Uncle of boy who brought gun to school facing intense scrutiny

"It hurts me, but I can take it," the 41-year-old bachelor with no children of his own said during an interview Wednesday. "I'm worried about the kids and how this will affect the rest of their lives."

In hindsight, Cochran said allowing the visit was a bad call. But, he said, the children love their parents despite their past chemical addictions and criminal records. He said Passmore has been clean and sober for several years.

She was working and living with a man who had a good job and seemed like "a good guy," he said.

"She was doing better than she ever had," he said. "I thought it was good for the kids to see her, but I never in a million years thought there were guns there, and I never would have let them go if I'd known."
