Actually, rape of the elderly happens quite often. It doesn't usually make the news, although it occasionally does.

Statistics clearly show that most rape victims are young females.

I disagree with this idea that rape is about power and control that somehow sprouted in the 1970s. If that were true, victims would range from attractive to unattractive, old and young, male or female. The fact is, that rapists prefer a very specific target and it's usually young, attractive and female. It's about sex and violence. It's about having a fetish for violent sex. IMHO.

huh? I need to respectfully ask in which world you are living where this is the case? Rape can and does happen to anyone. Male, female, young, old, etc. I also resent the "attractive/not attractive" tag because IMO someone is beautiful because of what they emanate from within.

You're kidding me, right? I recommend you read up on rape and rapists. Some rapist will have a particular type, with some it might be young and attractive, but there are just as many who prefer older and vulnerable, or perhaps mentally challenged, but it is never about sex. It is about power, control, humiliation and violence. That's what is turning the rapist on, not what the victim looks like.

BBM. . .they do.

The statistics are only demonstrative of the rape cases that were reported to LE. Because of the societal stigmas we (general "we") place on gender/sex often times, in cases where men are the victims, it goes entirely unreported.

Respectfully BBM does apply and won't get into personal details and experience but I do know of numerous elderly rapes as well committed by YOUNG and not so young perps -- it's a ''hate filled power trip" (MOO)

My guess is she awakened earlier than the rest of the household on Sunday morning, and wandered out.

Yes, but my statement was directed at this:

If that were true, victims would range from attractive to unattractive, old and young, male or female.

Victims do range from attractive to unattractive, old and young, male and female. A lot of this has to do with opportunity, and a lot of it has to do with preference. Not all rapists will be okay with raping a child, just like child rapists don't want to rape an older woman. Child rape, especially that end in murder, are much more widely covered in the media. But rape is a huge issue, and everyone is effected.

I let mine walk to the store at 10. At 12 he could go on bike rides in the neighborhood and down to the creek, but not in the creek.

But you didn't flollow him to make sure he didn't go in the creek, did you? I don't really have a point, just that we all need to let go a little bit at some time and a lot bit later on.
Not that I think six is that point of course.

Rape is not about sex? Why is it called sexual assault then?

IMO - It is one thing to say the parents could have done more, even to be angry about it. Trust me, I am. It isn't what I would do. But it is another to claim they are victimless, and to basically treat them as her murderer (Not to mention, against TOS). I think we can point out their mistake without bashing them.

Can't some of us feel and state that we believe that they were negligent and also think that they are suffering for losing their little girl?

psyquestor, you are right. I dont think I would be able to go on if I had left her roam,
no one would have to tell me. I'm right up there with you..(((hugs))).

Does anyone know who the District Attorney is for this area?

Looks like it's Russell Hauge. Although I would not be surprised if this case gets a change of venue to Thurston or King county based on its impact on the community...

eta: sorry, i see that a bunch of ppl beat me to that little tidbit of info, lol

I completely agree. There is power involved but it is about sexual deviancy and urges. I don't think it's about power either. It's about satisfying urges and sick desires.

I just saw they arrested someone and I am so glad they got him and got him quick. I am also so glad it was not anyone from her family.

Sure, but that isn't what was being said earlier about them.

Without all the details, would it change anyone's mind about the patents blame if you found out the 17 year old took Jenice from her home at 4 in the morning and she was dead before the parents woke up?
It's possible their negligence had nothing to with it.
I realize it's unlikely but go with it.

I will always be enraged by child neglect, whether the child is neglected and alive, or neglected and dead.

I have extreme difficulty on cases where the child was made vulnerable to their murderer because of parental negligence. I hold the rapist and murderer accountable for his/her acts, the negligent parent(s) accountable for his/hers/theirs.

In these cases, I focus my sorrow, my sympathy, my heart...to the child victim. It's the best I can do.
