Police reopen case of missing Toppenish woman

More than a month has passed since family has heard from 24-year-old Kayann Canfield and reported her missing.

[snip]

Canfield’s family said she went missing during the early hours of Oct. 21. She was at a friend’s house near the corner of Progressive and Lateral B roads, just west of Wapato, when she sent her stepdad a text message asking for a ride. Five minutes later, she called him to say she had a ride and would see him in a few minutes. She never showed, and family and friends have not heard from her since, Monoian said.

On Nov. 5, Monoian said she found her daughter’s clothing dumped along a ditch near the intersection of Track and McDonald roads on the west end of Toppenish. She identified sweats, a T-shirt that belonged to her daughter as well as a sports bra she recently gave her.

The Yakima County Sheriff’s Office last month resumed a missing-person investigation after initially calling it off after local police reported they had seen Canfield with her boyfriend. Chief Civil Deputy Bob Udell said at the time they had some new information from acquaintances.

[snip]

Udell calls the case “very active,” and the new leads from Canfield’s acquaintances are being chased down.

“It deserves a very intense investigation,” he said. “It’s going to take some time to interview everybody, but I think that’s going to be where we’ll find our clues.”

Though it is common for people to disappear on their own accord, as deputies initially thought had happened with Canfield, “in this case there is information that does not lead us to believe that,” Udell said.

Deputies open case for Toppenish woman

A missing woman from Toppenish once thought to be a runaway could actually be in danger. Kayann Canfield hasn't been seen for more than a month. She has had her own run-ins with the law. But, deputies have reopened the case because of it.

Yakima County Sheriff's deputies considered Kayann Canfield a runaway until now because of her drug and criminal history. More than a month after her family reported her missing, investigators say foul play could be involved.

[snip]

Kayann hasn't been seen since October 20th. Deputies opened a missing person's case for her five days later. Within three hours, they called off the search because a Toppenish police officer said he saw her walking in town. But the family still hasn't heard from her, which is out of character.

Oh I see what you mean.
She was considered as located 5 days after the missing report, but in November 2013 she was treated as missing person again according to this article:
A detective with the Yakima County Sheriff’s Office began investigating her disappearance, but then called off the investigation when a Toppenish police officer said he saw her walking in town five days after she was reported missing.

Now, sheriff’s deputies have resumed the missing person investigation after receiving additional information recently from acquaintances.

So, still MISSING. Right?

Yes. Kayann is still missing.

She was reported missing. Then a LEO said he saw her, so they closed the case. But now it can't be verified if he saw her or not because he didn't actually talk to her, and Kayann still hasn't been in touch with her family. Her bf, who the LEO said he saw with her, denies being with her. And her clothing was found folded up on the side of the road.

Anyway, long story short, yes, Kayann is still missing. Active missing persons report can be seen here: https://mp.waspc.org/index.php?wac=13M0018624

One would hope that a LEO would be more responsible when reporting an alleged "sighting" of a missing person. He could have approached her or taken a picture to confirm that it was indeed her. Now time may have been wasted by what was almost certainly a report in error.

Let's hope that her family didn't move the clothing that they found. They may have contaminated a crime scene by doing this and lost valuable evidence. Hopefully, the police went to the area and at least performed a cursory search of the scene.

This case seems to be getting off to a rather rocky start. Let's hope that she turns up Ok as the longer that time passes the less likely that this will occur.

Here's some social media related to Kayann:

"BRING KAYANN HOME" Facebook group maintained by Kayann's family:

Kayann's personal Facebook:

Kayann's personal page doesn't use the last name Canfield, but it's definitely hers (content, family connections, etc. are all a match). Her family has been updating the group regularly, but according to her grandmother's comments, the police haven't been able to give them any new information lately. :(

still missing: ‘We have so many missing people’: Coroner tests remains found on Yakima River island as families wait, hope

Kayann Canfield is a 24-year-old with long red hair and a 2-year-old son had been living in Toppenish with her grandmother, who had custody of the boy. Though Canfield had moved out of her grandmother’s home, she kept in touch with family daily. They last heard from her late Oct. 20 and early Oct. 21, after she texted her stepfather asking for a ride, then called a little later to say she had one.

Authorities halted, then resumed their missing person investigation after Canfield was reportedly seen a few days later walking with her boyfriend. He denied being with her that day. On Nov. 5, Monoian found her daughter’s clothing dumped along a ditch near the intersection of Track and McDonald roads on the west end of Toppenish.

Years have passed with few updates.

“The hardest part is not knowing where she’s at. I’ve come to grips with (the possibility) my daughter is most likely dead. I’m OK with that, but I want that closure. I want to know where my daughter is,” she said. “Every time I hear it’s a female (body found), I immediately contact” investigators, Monoian said.

Bumping for Kayann. Any time someone has a habit with substances, this can increase unpredictability of the disappearance in the absence of leads. Though, how much of a wild card it becomes depends on the person and the substance. A homebody kratom or weed user is not much different from baseline, whereas a high dose meth and sex partier with CTE might hop to multiple strangers houses through the course of a weekend, places they’ve never been, and may or may not leave a digital trail of breadcrumbs in the process.

Kind of bizarre she was “just on her way home” a few minutes away but poof, gone. Not sure if the LE reflections of this case have been worked out, but databases still show her case.
