YAKIMA, Wash. — The FBI joined in the search Friday for missing 4-year-old Lucian Munguia, who disappeared nearly two weeks ago from Sarg Hubbard Park in Yakima.

Steve Bernd, a spokesperson with the FBI Seattle office, said they were asked for their assistance because they have access to additional resources.

Authorities blocked off the area surrounding the pond early Friday evening and had personnel out on a raft, with at least two divers coming out of the water.

According to the Yakima Greenway, the entire park will be closed Saturday, Sept. 24 from dawn to dusk to everyone, including people traveling on foot.

Multiple searches of the park over the past two weeks and of the Yakima Greenway from Selah to Union Gap — by both trained searchers and untrained volunteers and family members — have turned up nothing.

“We can say with a high chance that this area has been cleared, especially with the amount of people that we’ve had on this case,” said Kyle Cameron with Yakima County Sheriff’s Office search and rescue in an interview Sept. 19.

There’s been boats, kayaks and divers searching local waterways, including the Reflection Pond, Buchanan Lake and the Yakima River, to no avail. But volunteer recovery diver Dave Reynolds said it’s worth other divers taking a look, to make sure nothing was missed.

Goodall said Lucian’s father is a cook and team member at Tailgaters and coworkers felt they needed to do something to help him and his family. They reached out to the community a few days ago for help and were inundated with messages from local businesses.

“It really wasn’t even us even reaching out; it was other companies reaching out to us, saying, ‘Hey, how can we help? How can we be a part of it?'” Goodall said.

Dozens of local restaurants, groups and organizations donated items for a silent auction. Other community members helped with a bake sale and by holding a 50/50 raffle.

Several staff members also volunteered to donate their tips for the evening, all of it to help support the family and their continued search for 4-year-old Lucian Munguia.

“They’re really good people and I know they’re hurting right now,” Goodall said.

Hopefully the FBI will have found something today. But hopefully something positive.

FBI divers assisting in search for missing boy

Sep 24, 2022

Authorities aided by a newly arrived specialized team of FBI divers returned Saturday to Sarg Habbard Park to resume searching for a 4-year-old boy who disappeared two weeks ago.

The search, which now includes sonar equipment and FBI divers flown in from the East Coast, is focused on the park’s pond and nearby LL Buchanan Lake, a deep, former gravel pit south of park, said Yakima police spokesperson Yvette Inzunza.

Yakima Police Department Capt. Jay Seely said the pond, lake and Yakima River are the most likely places to search if he entered the water. While crews previously searched the pond repeatedly, authorities said milfoil, silt and other material reduced visibility in the pond’s water, requiring searchers to search by feel.

The sonar will allow crews to map the pond’s bottom and target their searches. Seely said the search is expected to continue through Wednesday.

“We’re determined to cover every square inch of that pond,” Seely said.

On Saturday the park was closed to the public, with signs along the Greenway’s path blocking entrances, while a security guard turned away people. The Yakima Fire Department’s technical rescue team’s truck was there along with a second fire department truck. Yellow police tape was visible near the large pond in the park.

In the past, I recall seeing equipment like "drags" being used to recover bodies in small ponds and lakes. I wonder if that technique would be helpful in this situation, especially in an environment with such low visibility.

FBI dive team turns up no new information as search for missing 4-year-old in Yakima continues

Sep 26, 2022

A search of the pond at Sarg Hubbard Park and Buchanan Lake by an FBI dive team over the weekend turned up no new information in the search for missing 4-year-old Lucian Munguia, according to Yakima police.

[…]

His disappearance sparked a massive search involving search teams from around the state. Police say they don’t suspect foul play. The park is bordered by a pond, lake and the Yakima River.

Yakima Police Department information officer Yvette Inzunza said in an email Monday that the search continues, with police detectives still actively working on leads and tips.

Oh Lucian…. my heart breaks for you and your family. The not knowing has got to be devastating.

Ugh, a former rock quarry - that is technical depth, you need advanced scuba certs to get down there and the visibility is zero and the temperature is freezing. What an incredibly sad story.

UGGG! Honestly, if they don't empty the ( those ) ponds they won't know for absolute sure. What are we supposed to think, he got picked up or wondering out there? Breaks my heart!

Lucian Munguia is supposed to turn 5 years old next week, surrounded by a family who loves him dearly. He’s supposed to get sea creature toys as presents and blow out the candles on his birthday cake. He’s supposed to get to go on rides at the fair for the first time.

He’s supposed to be here.

But with each passing day, his loved ones are struggling more and more to hold on to the hope that they’ll ever again get to hear him giggle, watch him play or hear him chatter all about the ocean life he loves so much.

[...]

Lucian’s family has a booth set up at the fair to raise awareness about his disappearance, tell people about the little boy who means so much to them and pass out flyers for people to take with them to wherever they call home.

“It’s the state fair, so there’s a lot of people coming from out of town,” Bailey said. “We’ve had a lot of people who haven’t heard about him being missing, so we just want everybody who’s not aware to be aware to know what his face looks like and what to keep an eye out for.”

The hope? That there’s someone, somewhere, anywhere who knows something and might recognize Lucian from the flyers. It’s a hope the family members refuse to relinquish, even in the face of weeks without a sign of their little boy.

[...]

KAPP-KVEW contacted the Yakima Police Department for an update Monday morning and were told that there are no updates in Lucian’s case. Detectives continue to follow up on tips, but as it stands, police continue to state that all evidence points to no foul play.
