NOT GUILTY WA - Parents try to kidnap daughter over forced marriage - November 3, 2024 (NG of attempted murder; Guilty of lesser charges)

I was wondering about this too because there was a protective order for her to stay 1,000 ft away from Isiah.

I think they are confusing two separate Orders. There was a "No Trespass Order" by Timberline HS, banning ZA from the school property, but I think the charge in question for their deliberation relates to the minor and his protection order. Either way, ZA knew she could not be at the school or near the minor! I think the Jurors will have a verdict today!

Concern for assaults such as this is being felt far and wide....even Iraq.
In May 2025, it was reported that the Iraqi Parliament was in the process of enacting a "Volunteer Rescuer Protection Law," which is similar to a Good Samaritan Law.
Here's why this law is considered important:
  • Current Situation: In Iraq, there has been a widespread reluctance to intervene in emergencies, fearing potential legal repercussions or tribal retaliation from the victim's family, according to a report by شفق نيوز. This fear has unfortunately led to preventable deaths and injuries.

Boy I saw the question, the usual response from the judge and clearly the mom is going to get by easy or they will hang on that. I expect a verdict soon but it may fall well short of what I was hoping for. Clearly some differing opinions and understanding of the law in that room. Have they stopped for lunch today?

I keep checking back. After that question Court TV guy said should be within the hour. That was some time ago. Boy looks like maybe another partial verdict if they can do that?

  • #245
Court TV just announced the jury is going for a walk! Evidently they did this yesterday, as well.

Not something I have heard a jury do before.

I have to assume that there are one or more smokers and that is the reason for the "walks"? I have watched many multi day deliberations and never do they go for a walk. That requires guards with them etc. Clearly they are hung on something. Do all juries even know that being hung is an option?

IMO, this is the third day the jurors have been 'walking'...and about this time of day as well. Could be a smoker, but could also be a 'breather moment'. Waiting impatiently here.

When a jury gets no help from their judge on instructions and remains confused I don't see how they can convict the person of that charge being unsure w/o being clear on the definition to find them guilty.

imo
I was thinking the same thing. It seems like there have been a few trials lately where a judge just refuses to provide clarity for a confused jury.

to get back the responses as this judge has given must be frustrating for the jury. Can she not just maybe offer the same idea in different wording? All attorneys just seem to agree with the responses so nothing changing. I don't think the "lawyering" in this case has been very exciting and they are sort of doing their job...especially defense. It must be difficult with so much translation going on.

Verdict clock is paused @18:24:47 for a walk, good for them.
Since jury has been deliberating for over 18 hours, is someone holding out?
Why weren't parents tried separately? Too late now.

I would like to know if jury has verdict on Mr. Ali but hung on Mrs. Ali can they come back with that or is the whole deal hung? I assume they might just be wondering that right now?

i was wondering too why not separately but probably expense. Both using public defenders. I don't like two defendants with each witness going thru three direct and cross exams. I also had the feeling that Mrs. Ali's attorney was doing what he could to put it onto Mr.

I wonder if the daughter had gone to Iraq if she would have been subjected to "Female Genital Mutilation". It looks like while FGM is illegal in Iraq, it is still widely practiced.

I wonder if her parents are U.S. citizens or not. If they've been here for 11 or 12 years, since Fatima was 6 years old, I would think they would have applied for citizenship.
I'm catching up on the thread, so idk if my comment has been written by someone else.

Some immigrants don't want the citizenship of the country they immigrate to. My own parents didn't for one thing. It was crazy because their two countries allow dual nationality. Two of us siblings were born in the second country, have that citizenship by birth. The other ones had to wait till one of our parents took out citizenship of the second country, which one eventually did for that very reason. We all had citizenship and passports of the first country.

It's harder for people who emigrate from or immigrate to a country that doesn't allow dual nationality. I don't know how Iraq views dual nationality. For some people, nationality is very much a part of identity and it's not always easy to let go of that. MOO So Fatima's parents may not have applied for US citizenship. In fact if the younger brothers were being taken to Iraq in the summer to get their passports, it sounds very much to me as if their parents don't in fact have US citizenship and the brothers needed their own passports so as not to be on their parents' passports any more, or similar.
Though I don't know how easy it is to remain in the US if you don't have US citizenship. Idk if there's something like 'landed immigrant status' that is permanent.

Jurors have a choice then to interpret the order either way.
As long as they get to 12 guilty votes all's good.
