What coddling? I think this was driven by jurors that thought that no one should speak against parental rights. I think it relates to Libertarianism. No one should tell me what I do with my kids.

I think most left-leaning people are aghast at this verdict.

i don't know but often prior bad acts are the subject of a pre-trial hearing and ruled that they cannot come in during trial. I assume that is what happened here.

I never heard anything about her, maybe I'm too used to the talk and criticisms directed at Judge Cannone.

I didn't watch the entire trial and I certainly didn't follow the pre-trial judgements/decisions. But I found her straight-forward and fair. I know some were upset that she didn't allow the "she was going to be sent to Irag and forced to marry an old man" story into the trial. But even Fatima was weak on whether that was true or not. (I think it was likely true, but what do I know?)

The video should have spoken for itself. IA was choking his daughter and kept doing it despite her going unconscious and despite people pleading with him to stop.

I'm in Southern Vermont and it's been a revolving door across the board, for years judges have been very lenient with bonding and sentencing and finally in the past 2 yrs with outrage from the community they're finally coming down harder and what was a very artsy tourist town has changed into a haven of drugs and violence.

It's not about the sentence...it's about the verdict. The jury found this guy innocent of attempted murder and I'm steaming mad!

Let's not confuse things. Why did the jury find him innocent? My take is that they don't want government interfering with their parenting.

That's got nothing to do with so-called lenient sentencing.

I can see why the jury didn't convict ZA but like you said about IA "the video should have spoken for itself" but it didn't.
It's not the first time we've seen a defendant acquitted when their recorded actions show otherwise.

this reminds me a lot of the McGrath killing and trial and partial verdict of Raul Valle. There too that video was played and played and yet he was given a pass and they were even hung on lessor charges. What is going on in this country?

It's not that type of area. Without giving out too much personal information, each and every person I know in Lacey is extremely left-leaning. Evergreen State College is a short bus ride away. My personal feeling with the jury, knowing what I do of the area, is that they didn't want to seem prejudiced against the defendants, so they swung the pendulum hard the other way. Similar to the argument the defense lawyer made for the mother- he knew the jury. The defense lawyer for the father only used the tactic of parenting because it was the only defense he had at all.
I didn't mention sentencing, someone else did. But judges only sentence that way because they think that is what their constituents want- because of the area they are in. That is the jury pool, that is what is has to do with lenient judges and overall politics of an area.

I was talking about my county in relation to the problem with "accountability in general" and the revolving door where judges give criminals none or low bonds then out in the community they re-offend.
Then when it comes to sentencing even violent repeat offenders get the minimum sentence or the judge runs with the mitigating factors and goes below the minimum.

I definitely appreciate that insight. I hate the fact that violent criminals might be given low/no bonds.

I just find it odd that this jury didn't convict Dad for attempted murder. Left-leaning citizens hate abuse by males.

I'm still so upset with this outcome.

At the moment the name escapes me about another verdict today. I didn’t follow it closely but the defendant was given 40-50 years for assaulting his wife. The contrast between this case and his is astounding.
