Judge Christine Schaller imposed the maximum possible sentences on both parents — 20 months for Ihsan Ali and just under one year for Zahraa Ali. Schaller said that if it weren't for bystanders, Fatima would likely have been killed.
"Your behavior was reprehensible and nothing defends what you did," Schaller told the father. "You were not going to let her go, you were not going to let her breathe because nobody else was going to control the situation… you were going to maintain control."
As part of the sentencing, Ihsan Ali is also ordered not to have any contact with his daughter for the next 10 years.

Why wasn’t it filed as Domestic Violence in the 2nd degree? It would probably have to go to the state Superior court, but seems that it meets the definition. Wrong filing? Too much paperwork otherwise?

2nd degree Domestic violence Assault Class II (choking with traces fits in here) is a Class B felony. “DV Assault 2 is a Class B felony and a strike offense (a third strike is life in prison) and is punishable by up to 10 years in prison, loss of gun rights, and a $20,000 fine.”

Why couldn’t he get 10 years? He nearly killed his daughter.

Fatima is the bravest young woman I've seen. I'm glad she didn't restrain herself and told the complete truth about what monsters both father and mother are. Because they are. Complete monsters. The court failed Fatima. Their sentence is nothing in comparison to what they've done. I hope ultimately they get the punishment they clearly deserve. Somehow someway.

I'm so scared for her, to be honest. I wish her only the best. I hope some change is able to be made in the future to reduce the risk posed by the Alis.
