New photo posted by Steve Monchaul on fb. It is near the trail but looks like this could possibly be the find of her gear we have been seeking- possibly blue backpack very near the trail ... they are going to the location now.

Steve Monchauk's pic of potential gear:

Steve Monchak

sounds like the picture came from using his personal drone to search/film on the mountain.

the undergrowth in the search areas looks insanely lush/full. i wonder how much it clears up/dies off over the cooler months.

I don’t know if it’s an issue of can’t or won’t. Many organizations won’t self-deploy because they have relationships with the police departments. From what I understand, it’s considered rude and unprofessional to not get the police’s permission. Furthermore, some won’t self-deploy because working for families alone can be a hairy business. That is why large organizations like NecroSearch require that the police seek them out and won’t work for families at all.

I would also assume there are liability issues. If the family sends out people who law enforcement haven’t found are certified for the terrain etc, they could have yet another rescue on their hands.
I know early on the mom said that most of the red tape is due to liability issues. That's sad when insurance companies and lawyers can decide who lives or dies just by making people inactive. On a downer note, the mom's most recent video says that the searchers should be looking under large rocks and brush in case she had to get out of the elements and curl up. I went, uh-oh. She's sounds almost like she's describing terminal burrowing. Let's hope it's not that.

It looks like quite a bit of stuff scattered there.

she was last seen wearing dark gray pants and a maroon hoodie. She also had two hiking poles, a blue backpack, a beige sun hat and a dark gray wool beanie.

Seattle woman still missing after not returning from hike nearly three weeks ago

This might be it guys....

I read an article tonight that quoted KD on the Ron and Don Show. KD said he believes Sam is still on the mountain but won’t know for sure until they “recover Sam”. I think that is pretty telling conscious or unconscious wording on his realization of the likely outcome. Regarding the dogs, I would personally be bringing both cadaver dogs and scenting rescue dogs in at this point in time, although I might not admit that to the parents. Do you think he is “protecting” them as best he can maybe?

Aren't there other bodies there yet to be recovered? I'd bring cadaver dogs out too because even if Sam is alive you might recover someone else! At least that's how I'd spin it to the family. No reason not to have all the possible resources at your disposal.

Thank you for linking the photo!

Is there a way to enlarge this? It's very small (I'm on my phone).

What color are the hiking poles she had with her?

One silver/grey and one red.

Thank you kgreg. So could it be the red pole next to the blue thing or is it just a branch?
I was kind of wondering that too!

All I know is that sure looks like it could be a blue backpack.
I hope he went out there with a group and they can look above and below this area.
Checking in trees and such for anything else.

Sam’s mother has put out a call for SAR air scent dogs. Sounds like they need to be able to self-deploy which can be an issue. Can anyone here explain why the dogs and handlers can’t just self-deploy in a private search such as this one?
The dogs will scent run everything and send people on loops. The area of scent is just too big or too dangerous for the dogs to hit on crevices that may be hidden by rough, steep terrain. Jmo

I find it difficult to judge scale and proportions, based on the aerial photo, but if the ferns surrounding the bluish object are at a similar level, it looks IMO too small to be a standard sized backpack. Anyone else get that impression?

I think the mom's desperation is really shining through that video. I know that she is focused on the dogs, but as I've said before, this is something that a lot of people do under stress. They get focused on one thing that they can control (they think), and focus on that. In her mind it's dogs, dogs, dogs, and the mediums she's choosing to believe are encouraging this. I say choosing, because she said that some mediums have told her Sam has passed on, but she doesn't believe them. But the reality is, I think, that if law enforcement had 50 dogs that could have searched, they would have brought them. Many groups simply don't have dogs that can handle such rough terrain. If they indicate on a crevasse, the dogs will have to be lowered into there with technical climbers. Additionally, many of these organizations are likely the ones that the police called to bring dogs the first time.

On a final note, it's not really an insurance thing, and I hope the police are not being so short-sighted to be territorial. Instead, these groups rely heavily on the police department. If they do anything to strain that relationship, that will hurt them. By no means do I think the police have told any group no. Likely, Samantha's family doesn't want to wait for the sheriff's department to say yes. I think that this is an important distinction.

I was a bit taken aback when she said they had one dog who was being deployed to areas the mediums told her. I would hope they would use the one dog in areas that make sense based on her last known location and not on what a crystal ball predicted.

I realize it's NEVER enough when it's your child. However, the search for Sam was larger and lasted longer than many other searches I've seen. I was really quite surprised that it went on so strong for so long. They were really very lucky to utilize SAR resources for as long as they did. Unfortunately, many times they aren't found on the official search. I hope Steve finds her this time.

Part of me wishes that I could say that I was surprised, but given that her family has no other leads, I'm not. Her mother has talked many times about conversing with mediums, and has said she doesn't care what people think about that. Still, I think the better path would be to search her last known location as you mentioned. More than likely, that is where she is. I don't see her going far from the trail, and it is completely possible that she was overlooked by previous searchers. It has been known to happen. This is especially true if you factor in that they were looking for a living person, not a body. So far I haven't heard anything about cadaver dogs.

This is surprising, but also not at the same time. Her mother changes what she thinks a lot about how Sam is, what she was doing, etc. I think that this is a symptom of how panicked and terrified she must be. I really hope that there are people making rational decisions about where to search that may just not interface with the facebook page as much.
