If she were drunk she would have crashed that car into something earlier - not driven down a dirt path that was hard to find at night and then back up her van into the water only to jump out.

Doesn't make sense.

Not necessarily. You'd be surprised how many drunks are on the road at any given time. They don't all have crashes. Eventually it catches up with them, though.

As far as the path being obscured...It's not like she was looking for that dirt path...but she saw it and turned into it, which, to me gives testament about how bad her judgment was, possibly because she was drinking.

Thinking about the timing - what time did she intend to get to Castle Rock? Did I miss that? Leaving Silverdale at 5pm on Friday will take quite a while. I often make the trip from Seattle to Olympia on Friday nights and it can take over 2 hours because of traffic headed south. Silverdale to Tacoma would be about an hour; Tacoma to Olympia COULD be an hour (because of traffic) and then another hour to Castle Rock (in good traffic). Seems that arriving at 8pm at someone's house with a child seems strange.

Is this fiance fairly new on the scene?
His facebook page announces Shantina joining the team on 11-19-09.

Maybe Smiley was overwhelmed with stress: Recently discovered her fiancee had medical problems; left her cell phone behind; visiting a stepfather she hadn't seen in a long time; step-fathers home was a new destination; hungry little boy in the car; ordered food, left without it; anxious to get to the destination; had to stop at strangers home to call; relapsed during the week; car stuck in mud on desolate road.

Purse is missing but wallet in car!

Lots of stresses for Smiley - if you add a head injury the confusion would be so great that there would be no making sense to what she did. MOO Add alcohol, it would be even more confusing to us. MOO

Why is the fiance being slammed? The guy has the best rock solid alibi I've seen in a long time. Sure he could have done something from a distance. But what? She's driving around and seen at multiple locations, driving and meandering within a five mile radius. She's confused or under the influence. Her fiance is something like an hour away with her stepfather then LE is there. Someone explain to me how this fiance would be involved and what his involvement is? The only thing his timeline indicates is he was way far away and somewhere else at the time whatever happened happened.

IMO, the no substance abuse statement then admitting substance abuse is simple. Fiance and family were afraid no one would care enough to look for these two if people thought she was a drunk. But now he's being criticized that this new info will damage the search? Well maybe that's why he didn't talk about it because he thought the same way.

On his myspace, there is an "I'm sorry" message to him that dated sometime in 2008. So they've been together at least since 2008.

ETA: it's dated November 22, 2008. Says "I'm so sorry, please forgive me."

EATA: Her blog goes back to May 2008, and Robb was her fiance' then, so they had to have been dating prior to May 2008.

Category: School, College, Greek
I got my grades online about an hour ago. I got straight A's!!! My GPA is 3.78. I am so proud of myself. Taking care of 2 kids full time ( and D.J. every other weekend), house, cub scouts, school, and just life in general. I certainly couldn't have done it without my fiancee Robb. He is just so fantastic!! I can't believe I did so well. Can't wait for Christmas. Got all the kids what they wanted, and have a very happy, and healthy family. Couldn't ask for anything more on Christmas. I hope next year goes as well as this year did!!!!! Merry Christmas everyone and have a Happy New Year!

Does anyone else remember the "Runaway Bride" from a few years ago? IIRC, she made it all look like an accident because she was scared to get married.

It seems like something like that must be happening here. Either that or she crashed because she was drunk. I would be soooo suprised if this ended up being a homicide.

Do you think she found out her boyfriend had gotten a earlier start and she found out he was already at the Stepfathers? So she made all this up because she had been drinking?? She had to bring a overnight bag with her, but nothing was in her car. So im just hoping shes ok and her and her son are sleeping in a hotel somewhere. I mean she could have taken one credit card with her. I think LE will solve this soon. Im praying they find her and her son.

College
Well I finally will be attending college. I start the 22nd of Sept. at Olympic College in Bremerton. I am doing the medical billing and coding course. I can't wait. I have always wanted to attend college and now I am. I had to fight to get my financial aid, but I won!!! My life is coming together so nicely now. I can't believe how happy I am. I just celebrated my anniversary with Robb and couldn't be happier!!! Azriel is doing well, Nicole is doing good in school, and D.J. will be coming to spend the weekend with us. I hope that everyone can find the happiness that I have attained.

Chamberlain said Smiley fell in the restaurant parking lot. When she stopped by a house to ask directions, those in the house said she appeared disoriented and indicated she'd hurt her knee, apparently in the fall. "She looked a little out of sorts," Chamberlain said.

The Seattle Times is reporting it.
And the "blogger" that is on the Seattle Weekly site is a legitimate reporter versus the any yahoo with a computer can blog about things they know nothing about variety.

Disoriented as in mentally confused in general or regarding her situation (being lost)?

I don't know if Smiley was 'eager' to get to see the step-father she hadn't seen in a long time - but she seems overwhelmed with the many stresses that I outlined. In a recovering alcoholic, stress can become overwhelming and interfere with good decision making - actually, stress can do that to any one of us.

If Smiley fell and hit her head - that could cause headaches and tension - maybe confusion.

What I'm saying is that the reports about her seem to indicate she was highly stressed and confused. MOO

ETA: why did she seem to stop every hour: hungry little boy in the car, no cellphone, lost, anxious etc etc

I do, but if you read her blogs her whole life is about her son, his cubscouts, and then Robb.

One of the articles makes it sound like she backed into the water, if she was lost she may have been trying to turn around and slid off the bank. They said there are tire spinning marks so someone tried to get out.

If they got lost walking out I have a hard time thinking both of them deceased in the woods from exposure. They could actually be lost.....

About 10 minutes later, Dennis Williams said the two knocked on the front door of his home about a mile from the store.
"She seemed upset because she was lost," said Williams.
Williams said Smiley used the phone to tell a relative they were lost and going to be late. He said the mother and son did not seem to be in trouble. If anything, said Williams, the boy seemed hungry.
"We gave him a piece of pizza," said Williams.
She was not injured but spoke of an accident, which investigators believe may have been a reference to falling down at the diner.
"I wish there was something more I could've done. I wish I knew more, or asked the right questions to be able to say this is a person who's in trouble," said Williams.

No indication there he thought she was impaired.

I think someone had asked earlier about where the home was located that was the last place she was seen, I found this, BBM below:
__________________________________________________________

A search and missing person investigation was initiated after the van was found. The investigation indicates that Shantina and her son left Silverdale at approx 1700 hrs. on Saturday to visit a relative in Castle Rock. She can be traced to a West Olympia store at 19:50 hrs, a Martin Way restaurant at 2108 hrs., a Boston Harbor grocery at 21:50 hrs and finally a private residence in the 1400 block of 46th Ave. N.E. off Boston Harbor Rd. at approx 2200 hrs Saturday evening. Shantina was accompanied by only her son, according to the witnesses and various store videos that we have been able to access.

Shantina did ask for directions back to the freeway at the home on 46th Ave

One of the articles posted above (I'll have to go find the link) said that there were too many houses with lights on nearby for them to have gotten lost in the woods. Sounds like more of a residential area than a wooded area. LE seemed certain that if she had needed help either she or her son could have found it nearby.

Wonder why her hazard lights were on in the video?

Once Shantina left the house she called her grandparents from (DW), she was never seen or heard from again? DW was just on TV and he's NOT an elderly person. He looks like a young guy. I am going to look into him a little, no reason not to.

He must be elderly. A legitimate reporter said so ;)
