Has the family made a public plea for her to return? Wouldn't you if you thought there was a remote chance she'd survived?
My own feeling had been that the child being found, with reports of CPS probes and DUI, and the assumption that she had been negligent here, made the family "shrink back". Just my feeling.

Hello, all!

I don't know if me speculating on what may have caused her relapse may be important in figuring out what happened to Shantina in regards to her disappearance, but maybe it will help with some background prior to the day of her disappearance to get a more complete overall picture.

So, my thoughts--

Perhaps when Robb suspected he could be seriously ill, he needed costly testing and treatment. Maybe Shantina was the one who had good medical benefits, and he was thinking it might be to their financial benefit if they moved up their marriage so he could be covered through her insurance.

While she may have indeed loved him and wanted to marry him--one day--she may not have been thinking it would be happening this soon, so it threw her for a loop.

Perhaps just the possibly of him having a life-threatening illness was scary enough for her to fathom. Maybe to her, he was "her rock", and if he was vulnerable like this, it could have caused her a great deal of anxiety.

She could have been overwhelmed with all these changes coming at her so close together. Going to school, graduating, interviewing, new job....and then along comes Robb's scary health problems.

Just me pondering.

She graduated in 2008 and was already working for several months if not close to a year.

Yes, its possible, but it seems more likely that he was self-diagnosing and thus trying to hurry her. And this would point toward other things going wrong, prior. "I may have cancer" has all too often been used to try and trap someone (at least in my kooky family : ( )

A couple of observations:

I do believe that RS is a good guy and was good to her. He included her in everything, encouraging her to be all she could be by including her in Scouts, photography, school - very supportive of this for her.

IMO, he wasn't trying to hold her back because he was insecure about her success. He opened that door for her to be so successful and included in his family. His kids even called her their stepmom even though they were not married.

There was something else completely different going on in their relationship or her life which caused her to contact people from her past and be so emotional and stressed out. But this hasn't been disclosed to us. The media hasn't interviewed any one of her friends to dig deeper into her life. Her co-workers loved her (although none were directly interviewed for the public).

If I'm (hypothetically) revisiting my past, I'm either having closure to move forward or I'm reconnecting because I am feeling bad about myself and automatically go back to the people in my past with whom I'm familiar feeling that way.

I can't imagine a scare of cancer because of an internet search. He said he had been bleeding. If it was that much of a scare, he/she would have gotten into the doctor immediately, or at least gone to the ER. That doesn't make any sense to me. I don't even know why he said that to the public - it really was irrelevant. Bleeding can indicate so many things from an ulcer to just a great number of things unrelated to cancer.

If she were a dear member of my family, I would be still be pleading for her safe return.

I would be hitting the local newspapers and TV so people won't forget.

I would do that until she is found.

-Beach where van was found
-Gull Harbor Merchantile (where she stopped before the Williams)
-Williams home

or reverse that...back to the beach from the williams; she was down at the beach, went to the merchantile, went to the williams and did it all the same back to the beach.

Still catching up on all the posts today and last night - I believe this is the wrong Williams residence. What I have for the Williams address is only about 0.5 miles from the mercantile.

I don't see them both driving as anything unusual for somebody to be taking a bike. The weather is finally starting to break and bikers are chomping at the bit! They couldn't have very well all three ride the bike, so since Azriel was coming, they needed a way to transport him. They may have been going to take advantage of "Grandpa" and Az getting some bonding time together and go on a ride together and check out some new scenery. I have many friends that ride and they do this all the time when going to grandparents with the kids. Most people trust the kids and the grands love the time together also.

It's not clear that Azriel even knew SS's step-father.

I also wondered why when she stopped at the Williams house to use the phone, she called her grandparents. Robb did too, according to his account of the night on www.robbsimmons.com:

"I called her Grandparents house in Brinnon with her Step fathers phone. They had informed met hat she had stopped at a house in Olympia around 10:10, to use the phone, and ask for directions, and let them know she was ok."

Thurston County detectives say they are following up on leads, including several tips, but they've called off an active search for Shantina Smiley.

Azriel's body was found Thursday. An autopsy positively identified the boy, determined he had drowned and his death was an accident.

A wallet containing Smiley's driver's license, some cash and credit cards was found in the van. Two mismatched shoes, a partially full and corked wine bottle, an inhaler and an orange ball have washed ashore since, and police said the items apparently belonged to the boy or his mother.

According to police, there was no indication that a crime took place inside Smiley's 2005 Dodge Caravan.

Well, she was raised by her grandparents, so those were who she was closest to.

Today? And it already started? And this just came out today? And what about all the people in Kitsap Co. where he went to school being able to pay their respects? I was hoping for something closer to his home. RIP Azriel. I feel so bad for what he went through. I have a son the same age, same grade, who is also a wolf cub in Cub Scouts just like Az. Heart breaking.

I thought that also. The smile seemed genuine, not fake/forced. Azriel also looked fine in the videos, ie dancing/goofing for the cameras. What happened between the time of those video's and her stop at the William's house where she was reportedly visibly upset?

I wonder if she is always a naturally smiley person or if this was out of character for her. My hubby and I were talking about it and he said he would know for sure something was up if it were me smiling like that on surveillance. It's just not my regular character.

I don't understand this. If she is not alive shouldn't they be looking for her remains? And if she is alive wouldn't they be looking for her because of the possible negligence in her son''s death? I don't know, maybe I am missing something here. Did they search the water to see if her body was there?

Yes, I am puzzled by "but they've called off an active search for Shantina Smiley".

They searched the water and had a plane in the air.

Pierce County sheriff's spokesman Ed Troyer said Friday afternoon that a search plane was sent up to look for Smiley in the general area where her son's body was found.

A Coast Guard craft and Pierce County sheriff's boats fanned out to search the waters around the island.

I didn't know her grandparents live in Brinnon. Maybe I had just overlooked that bit of info, if it had been mentioned before. And RS said he called them from the step-father's house in Castle Rock & was told that SS had called them (the grandparents in Brinnon) around 10:00 p.m. to say she was all right?

Brinnon is on the Hood Canal on SR 101, across the canal (west) from Silverdale.

I had assumed she called grandparents in Castle Rock, but I was mistaken. I find this interesting - she called her grandparents in Brinnon, not her step-father's house in Castle Rock.

I remember a discussion a few threads back where there was confusion about why she didn't call the step-father. It was suggested perhaps she didn't have the step-father's phone number with her. But, IMO, if she had the "destination address" (which RS said she gave to him on the phone), she would also likely have the phone number, too.

She wasn't going to visit the grandparents in Brinnon, so why contact them to say she was all right?

Hmmmm...

For real! I am trying to work out the conversations here. Hello, granddad? I am lost and had an accident but I am ok. Did she say to call her steps to let them know that.......what? I'm coming but I'm going to be late when she knew she wasn't going there at all that night. I thought I read that RS was the one to call the grandparents. He didn't say he called back after they called him so apparantly until he called they didn't understand anything was wrong perhaps?
