12:18
Pathologist gives evidence
Home Office pathologist Brian Rodgers has told the trial this morning of the devastating damage a single bolt fired from a crossbow did to Mr Corrigan. He said it must have been from “a powerful weapon.”

Dr Rodgers concluded the bolt must have been fired from “not too great a range” and must have been shot from the wall around Gof Du “either just inside the wall, or just outside the wall.”

12:19
Forensic firearm expert takes to the stand
Giving evidence now is forensic firearm expert Andre Horne who has investigated three fatal crossbow shootings and 10 other cases involving crossbows.

Mr Horne says broadhead points are specifically to hunt animals. Hunting animals with bows in Britain is illegal he said.

Broadheads are for bigger animals - they have razor sharp edges to sever arteries so they rapidly bleed to death. They are not designed for target practice - because the razors get damaged - he said.

12:21
Expert tells of what he found at the house after shooting
Mr Horne is demonstrating in a video how a crossbow is loaded, which needs a cocking aid because it is so powerful.

In the video Mr Horne also demonstrates the effect of a broadhead bolt on ballistic gelatine which is used to represent muscle tissue.

Crossbows come in different types and cocking aids are not needed for less powerful weapons. More powerful weapons would need a cocking aid.

Mr Horne examined the wall behind the satellite dish where Mr Corrigan was shot. Two blades from the bolt were recovered at the base of the dish, the other was recovered by a chair near the dish.

Other parts of the bolt were recovered nearby. He looked at the pebble-dashed wall where blood spatter was on. There were two areas where the pebbles had come off. They were in centre of blood spatter and probably result of bolt impacting the wall.

Broadhead blades would have fallen off when the arrow struck the wall and plastic tip broke off - and landed where they were. The arrow then bounced back. The assumption is it came from left to right and then bounced back at an angle after striking wall.

12:28
Crossbow was 'probably' fired from being a wall
Blades on broadhead are kept in place by a plastic tip. The tip was not found but that didn’t surprise Mr Horne who said it would be difficult to find among the grass.

Trajectory of bolt through Mr Corrigan’s body was investigated to help locate where the shooter was when the arrow was fired.

Mr Horne concluded the crossbow was shot from the field side of the wall with a shooting trajectory towards the satellite dish.

Mr Horne says he wouldn’t expect the shooter to be in the open and would have expected the person to be concealing himself, probably behind the wall, next to some shrubbery, where he could have a view of the front door and satellite dish.

Mr Horne said he also arrived at his conclusion of the location of the shooter by most of the blood spatter being between the satellite dish and the window and the position of the bolt.

12:28
Illegal to hunt with crossbows
Mr Horne clarifies it is illegal to hunt animals in Britain with crossbows with any type of arrow or bolt.

Just learning about the case now - do the prosecutors think the shot was accidental? From some of the reports, the angles and planning needed to hit Corrigan seem like the shooter would need a level of expertise.
