I actually saw a Dateline? special about two girls who escaped. One of the girls eventually went back on her own because that was the only life that she had known; and she wasn't able to adjust to the "outside" world. The other girl was thriving. I think that she was even in college, which I thought was a miracle since these girls have very limited education! I was saddened that the one girl just couldn't adapt.
IIRC, this special covered years. It showed the girls when they escaped to how they changed their styles and attitudes. At first, it was like a time warp. It was nice to see how the one girl went from really geeky looking to changing to a typical teen. The other girl just couldn't adapt and returned to her compound. I often wondered what type of punishment she received for escaping.![]()
Last night I read the story of the two girls. They shared the same first name - Fawn - and their story is called the two Fawns. They were both 16 when they escaped, and eventually were taken in with one of the girl's older brother in Salt Lake City. He had escaped many years before, was married, and had a family of his own. When the two girls were tested for placement in public school, they were at the 5th grade level. The school put them in with their age group, but they had additional home study and the one girl who excelled caught up with her peer group eventually. Here's a link to their story:
