I bet the first hour or two of any jury deliberation is the jurors unwinding and getting out their feelings about the process, since they haven't been able to talk to each other about it before. A lot of tension is likely built up and they can start to let off steam and start to organize themselves. So I tend to discount the first 2 hours as their version of doing what we've all had the luxury of doing all along.
I suspect the next 4 hours of deliberations are taking a first vote, figuring out what evidence they individually and/or collectively need to look at, organizing lists and figuring out what the law is instructing them.
Perhaps some of them are confused by definitions of circumstantial evidence. I'm sure "reasonable doubt" gets its fair share of discussion.
And in this case they have to decide accident vs. homicide and then is there enough evidence to prove it was DP who did it (versus not enough evidence).
It might take them some amount of time to work their way to taking a 2nd and 3rd vote, depending. And yes, it all depends on how well they work together, how they resolve differences, etc, etc. Sometimes I'm amazed that any group of 12 random people can come to an agreement.
