Websleuths is changing our colors

Another vote here to have this one reinstated. It is so useful and there isn't any other emoji that works in its place.

I realise - as has been said - that if we do a reply to the post, this then allows the option to select :D from the drop down menu. But many times, I just want to make a quick response - not add another post to the discussion just so that I can add a :D
Also, adding comments just to react with a 😂 Is going to fill threads up quicker. But we need more laughter in our life!

It seems very unfair to deprive the majority when a few people are misusing it.
Is it really not something that adults could not just roll their eyes and ignore.
Exactly. Whenever anyone laughed at a serious post of mine I'd think they were a bit weird but I'd just ignore it. No point bothering mods over something so petty.

Anyway, I like the new colour scheme.

I hate change, especially when its cosmetic so I Dislike the new skin. Id really be happy though if Black/Orange remained as a Personal option as @fraize said.

Priorities for me would be an Edit button in Private Group Chat and the reinstatement of Laughing Emoji along with a wider Emoji range.

Also a 60sec urgent notification pop-up if SillyBilly is reading any UK thread you are watching. ;)

Thanks for the open info/input though :)

Another vote for the laughing emoji.

Tricia, please reinstate the laughter emoji, it’s much loved.

And missed.

Pretty sure the original Websleuths was blue and changed to orange a few years ago?

I vote too for the return of the laugh emoji. The world has gone to hell since it was removed.

Another vote for the laughing emoji please @Tricia. Even a giggle or a big smile would do. Look what’s happened to the world since you took it away…

The blue hurts my eyes. can we at least be given the option of keeping the orange and black?

Yes an option to use the orange theme would be good for those who don't find the blue comfortable to look at. Many forums have that feature to switch themes.

I think, having switched between the two colour schemes a few times, one issue is too much visual white space - it seems very bright. The contrast between post header box, quote box and new post field is quite marked on the orange version, so maybe it’s just that the grey/blue boxes need darkening a shade or three?

Added images for side by side example

I concur @CoverMeCagney …. and with elder eyes such as mine, worry that too much of the bright white background and light contrast is making it harder on the eyes. For focus and resolution. MOO

You can switch to dark mode.
Yes, but it's kind of one extreme vs another extreme for me.

I think some really good suggestions have been made that could help. Even at the bottom of this page in the Similar Threads section the darker blue and grey fonts helps a lot to not make me squint compared to the pale blue.

I would really appreciate it if the option to choose which one to use was made a permanent feature. I cannot use the new colour for long as it hurts my eyes.

Even if it was set for just 10 minutes an edit button in private chat would be wonderful.

It's also possible that we can make a high-contrast theme available for people who have a hard time with low-contrast color-schemes in the future. ... snipped to reply

Oh-oh, in dark mode I can barely tell the difference between your post and my reply. My old eyes need more contrast.

Thank You @fraize for working it out with us. I love it so far, but do notice things that need tweaking.

  • I will miss the "laughing like emoji" because I'm on a thread that uses humor often, but it's no big deal.
  • A big change I don't like so far is hard to explain. I was able to highlight just a part of other's posts, and then a quote box would pop up to only quote those selected words.... well now I can't see that pop up quote box. I happen to have made examples of how I'd do it on another thread, so I'll be back to post an example to show you what I mean. In the new color scheme, I can't see the quote pop up because it's a black box. See below:

Sadly, the Black-Orange theme will eventually have to go away. The problem with maintaining the Black-Orange theme alongside the Websleuths_2025 theme is that it's written with a lot of legacy code which is difficult to maintain. I will be looking into making variations of the Websleuths_2025 theme that will be easier on the eyes for those with difficulties, but Black-Orange's days are numbered.

I will commit, however, to make a higher-contrast theme before shutting Black-Orange down.

Lastly, regarding the laughing-emoji, I'm dropping the hammer on this one. While I really do appreciate your enthusiasm on the matter, we are not planning to bring back the Laughing Emoji.

If you hover over a user's name, you'll see the added info, and a few other tools. By not adding the user-data to every rendering of the user's card, and instead waiting until you mouse-over the username, we save dozens of additional round-trips to the database on every page, which makes the whole site faster.
