Terminology. Parade Crash or Accident?
I see why some ppl think those terms do not accurately describe the events or actions; I agree.
First "crash" and "accident" suggest a single point of impact, not a scene w dozens of strikes, covering several city blocks. And "accident" suggests circumstances beyond the driver's control.
Synonyms I saw for crash do not convey the right notion (Thanks anyway, ;) Monsieur Roget).
Collision, maybe, but still seems to be a single event. Pile up, maybe, seems to apply to multiple vehicles, not victims along several blocks. Wreck, IDK.
Not thinking of better alternative to either word. my2ct

I may be overlooking some alternatives. Regardless of MSM's description, a tragic day for everyone.

Other phrases?
In traveling thru parade, DB drove in such a way that his car struck participants and bystanders.
Factual (unless someone else was at the wheel).
Nope, waaay too long for headline, awkward length for other sentences.
Or?

DB went on a murderous spree.
Nope, not in MSM. That suggests/concludes he had the intent necessary to criminally cause deaths & injuries. No trial, no conviction. Has not yet been proven in court.
Or?
I refer to it as Christmas Parade Massacre

Seeing his cute face was devastating. He hadn't even gotten his big front teeth in yet. :(....and their older son had a fractured skull and is still in the hospital. I hope this family has a strong support network.
This family is super involved with their church who has been absolutely incredible. The local baseball community has also really stepped up and made sure that they are taken care of with meals etc.

<modsnip - no MSM link>

Personally, I am in the camp that believes DB should be charged as a domestic terrorist. He literally rapped about being a "terrorist" and a "killer in the city". Then went on to do exactly that.

HOW THE USA PATRIOT ACT REDEFINES "DOMESTIC TERRORISM"

Section 802 of the USA PATRIOT Act (Pub. L. No. 107-52) expanded the definition of terrorism to cover ""domestic,"" as opposed to international, terrorism. A person engages in domestic terrorism if they do an act "dangerous to human life" that is a violation of the criminal laws of a state or the United States, if the act appears to be intended to: (i) intimidate or coerce a civilian population; (ii) influence the policy of a government by intimidation or coercion; or (iii) to affect the conduct of a government by mass destruction, assassination or kidnapping. Additionally, the acts have to occur primarily within the territorial jurisdiction of the United States and if they do not, may be regarded as international terrorism.

How the USA PATRIOT Act redefines "Domestic Terrorism"
You are not alone. I think he is and should be charged as a Domestic Terrorist. His history and social media shows that he definitely had the desire to do just what he did, take out as many people as possible.

can u put the good parts in, its paywalled
Vehicle ramming. It is the term researchers use to describe incidents in which a car, truck, or motorcycle is turned by its driver into a weapon against people on the street.

It is a phenomenon they had witnessed over the years through much of the world. But last year, a peculiarly American variation of this practice became increasingly common, one in which demonstrations — especially the groundswell of antiracism protests spurred by Floyd’s killing — were the target.

The numbers alone make it stunning that more national notice hasn’t been given to this violent trend. Between Floyd’s death on May 25, 2020, and Sept. 30, 2021, vehicles drove into protests at least 139 times, according to an analysis completed by The Boston Globe, relying on researchers’ data, local news coverage, and the Globe’s own findings. In addition to the three deaths, vehicle rammings at protests have injured at least 100 people, the Globe found, yet in most cases the driver has gone unpunished: The Globe confirmed the existence of charges in just 65 of the cases — fewer than half of them — and found only four so far in which a driver was convicted of a felony.

@cvaldez1975 here’s some data on car rammings that have happened since George Floyd’s death that came from the article. Most of this relates to protesters but it’s terrifying how under prosecuted these types of incidents are in general - see DB’s previous arrest involving the mother of his child - and one of the linked articles also talks about how there are new laws in some municipalities that protect those using vehicles as weapons.

I’m shocked that they havent added terrorism modifiers given the Nevada bomb threat charges - but it’s unclear whether or not LE was aware of those at the time.

@LMDlong bbm Not disagreeing w you, as calling it a massacre seems to fit.
My earlier post was intended to comment about why MSM used terms crash and accident.

Seems the most important wording is the criminal complaint, originally filed w 5 counts of "first degree intentional homicide"* under WI. statute. Maybe the 6th count has already been added.

For comparison, in Toronto Canada it was called a van attack. fwiw
Toronto van attack: Minassian guilty of killing 10 people
''A Canadian man who killed 10 people by ploughing a van into pedestrians in Toronto has been found guilty on all 26 charges related to the 2018 attack.

Alek Minassian had admitted the attack, but his lawyers argued he was not criminally responsible due to his autism spectrum disorder.''

Justice Anne Malloy has dismissed this claim, saying the attack was the "act of a reasoning mind".

Minassian faced 10 charges of murder and 16 charges of attempted murder.

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/incel-canada-terrorism-1.5577015
''Adding a terror dimension to the case will undoubtedly make it more challenging for the prosecution to make its case, Roach pointed out. Not only will the Crown need to argue that the incel movement constitutes an ideology, he said. It will also need to show the attacker's goal was to intimidate a segment of the population. In this case, likely women.

Toronto criminal lawyer Nader Hasan is more skeptical. While terror laws have been unevenly applied in Canada, the concept of terrorism itself has been "a moving target," he said.

"These laws are tremendously broad, such that what is 'terrorism' is not so much a function of what the law says but rather a function of what the police and prosecutors believe it to be in their minds," he said.

"The decision to charge this suspect with a terrorism offence is a departure ... But the second problem remains: The terrorism laws are poorly drafted."

DB attacked a crowd of innocent people. At a minimum, he’s a mass murderer. I’ve not seen a determination on whether it will be considered a hate crime, but I suspect it will not be charged as such. Without a link to foreign extremism, apparently it will not be called terrorism or a lone wolf attack. The police chief stated there is no evidence that the attack was domestic terrorism. I am reminded of a quote I see on threads: “Absence of evidence is not the same as evidence of absence.”

I am certain of two things.
1. The wording of criminal charges will not bring back the deceased victims, nor heal the lifelong injuries to the survivors.
2. DB is going to prison for life.
bbm
Oh, no.
This is bad news .
That's probably the last that will be said about that from the media or law enforcement.
But the acts that DB committed appeared to be deliberate.
Sorry I have to respectfully disagree with this chief of police.
Not sure what else to call it if the terms that describe this villainous choice cannot be used ?
MOO.

I thought the driving was a lot like that truck that plowed into people in Nice on Bastille Day.
That's exactly the case I thought about.
Some well-placed police vehicles and trucks could have prevented this, I think ?
Imo.

EXCLUSIVE: Waukesha massacre suspect Darrell Brooks was convicted for threatening to bomb the Nugget Casino in Nevada and is STILL wanted in the state for failing to appear in court Darrell Brooks was once convicted for threatening to bomb a Nevada casino | Daily Mail Online

    • Darrell Brooks was busted in March 2007 for calling in a bomb threat to the $43-per-night Nugget Casino Resort in Sparks, Nevada, DailyMail.com can reveal
    • He was put on probation after being convicted of conspiring to disturb the peace - a gross misdemeanor - and was banned from the casino for life
    • His rap sheet also includes a conviction for statutory sexual seduction – the term for sex with a minor aged 16 or under in Nevada law - in January 2007
    • Brooks was also charged with failing to inform the police of a change of address while a registered sex offender
    • Court papers seen by DailyMail.com show Brooks is still wanted in Nevada for failing to appear on the change of address charge after he missed a court date

    • His rap sheet also includes a conviction for statutory sexual seduction – the term for sex with a minor aged 16 or under in Nevada law – in January 2007 and another of failing to inform the police of a change of address while a registered sex offender.

The latter two counts both relate to the mother of his child – named in Wisconsin court papers as 'EAP' – who he punched and tried to run over at a gas station in Milwaukee on November 2.

Brooks pled guilty to the single count of statutory sexual seduction in exchange for a reduced sentence of 36-months on probation and a $2,362 fine. He was also ordered to undergo a psycho-sexual evaluation.

This is the reason I believe that there will be terrorism modifiers happening. There were prior charges of bomb threats and mass violence that LE were not aware of at the time of the attack - and there have also been other charges in a variety of states that were unearthed after the fact. Since this was such a massive crime scene with almost a square mile of evidence that needed to be logged and collected as well as the fact that they didn't catch DB for a few hours, I think that there was not ample time for LE to look over EVERY single one of this guy's criminal complaints before charging him.

TBH this is the reason why we need an interstate criminal charge database and universal warrant compact similar to CODIS. If this guy were to have been picked up on that paternity warrant here in WI and they saw he was a fugitive in NV, they could very easily have locked him up for the sex offense charge and he would not have been able to offend again and cause this horrific tragedy.

a couple of questions as I’m in England.
Are you saying one state doesn’t know any other states criminal history?

and

because of the bomb threat would he not be on something like a FBI list ?
Thanks

7 chilling details of parade suspect who 'spoke to self & rapped about murder'

From the article:

He was "always a little off," one neighbor, who didn't want to be identified told The Sun.

"He must've snapped," another neighbor Ebony told The Sun. "The whole thing is messed up but it doesn't surprise me."

They always say something is off about them. I do not think he snapped. Many mass killers think about committed their evil actions.

It is looking more like Darrell Brooks is an injustice collector. Injustice collectors see themselves as victims and are often constant complainer.

Are They an 'Injustice Collector?'

Examples of injustice collectors are wide ranging. They can be Jodi Arias, Lori Drew, Casey Anthony, Yoselyn Ortega, Betty Broderick, Angela Marinucci, Dora Cisneros, Gertrude Baniszewski, Theresa Knorr, Aileen Wuornos, Patrick Purdy, David Berkowitz, Charles Manson, Jeffrey Dahmer, John Wayne Gacy, Dean Corll, Elliot Rodger, Eric Harris, Nikolas Cruz, James Huberty, Adam Lanza, Campo Elias Delgado, Seung-Hui Cho, Martin Bryant, Omar Mateen, Stephen Paddock, Anders Breivik, and Osama bin Laden.

Sorry this is gonna be super in depth but here we go.

There are certain restrictions to being picked up on a warrant outside your jurisdiction, even within the same state. For example, there was a guy recently who had another case on this site who had fled his home state because he was wanted on warrants in 4 or 5 different counties. An event happened where he ended up having to come back to that state and he deliberately avoided being in those counties because of the warrants. AFAIK (someone correct me on this if I am wrong) the arresting agency has to give other jurisdictions permission to pick someone up on a warrant and the offense has to be extraditable.

In DB's case, the Nevada cases - specifically the sex offense one - are extraditable offenses. It's possible that LE was not pursuing those warrants outside of Sparks County - the warrants were not extraditable ones - so DB would not be picked up on those offenses if he were arrested in, say Milwaukee County. It sounds like authorities would be aware of the warrants that were out for them, but would not be able to do anything about them because of the fact that they were contained to Sparks County.

However, according to Wisconsin Statute 968.07, if you have an extraditable warrant in another state, you can be arrested on it within Wisconsin's borders. This is where our justice system massively fails. We have this statute in our legislative code - as do a lot of other states - and the federal government mandates that all states have an interstate extradition treaty, but there are so many warrants issued for violent offenders that are nonextraditable, thus putting people in serious danger.

The Appleton Post-Crescent (a paper in Wisconsin) did an investigation on this a few years back which I am linking here; there has not been much reform on this after the article has been posted afaik: Some flee Wisconsin to get away with crimes

Here is the specific part of the WI Statutes that I reference: Wisconsin Legislature: 968.07

'HE IS A MONSTER'
Nathan described suspect Brooks,39, who was taken into custody in Waukesha, Wisconsin, on Sunday night as a "monster."

He said: "We don’t want to make this about race, or politics, but he is a monster, we don’t know what could have possibly driven him to this.

"I heard he was out on a $1,000 bond for running over his girlfriend, it just seems crazy and such a small amount, the rules need to change.

"People have been left traumatized by what they saw at the parade, you don't expect something like this to happen in a place like Waukesha.

"All of the families need help at the moment, they have lost so much, and we just hope Jessalyn and others in hospital fully recover."

WAUKESHA, Wis. — Just a few days after the horrific tragedy at the Waukesha Christmas parade, the community is coming together for dozens of victims.

A mother and daughter who were struck during the parade remain in the hospital with serious injuries. The Perez family says the mother, Romelia, will need a wheel chair to get around. Thanks to a local contractor, she won’t have to worry about how she will get inside her home.

This Waukesha construction crew makes a living building things like wheelchair ramps, but this project isn’t ordinary work, rather a labor of love.

WAUKESHA, Wis. — Former members of the Wisconsin Badgers football team are stepping up to help the families affected by the tragedy in Waukesha earlier this week.

Baltimore Ravens offensive lineman Kevin Zeitler, Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker Joe Schobert and fullback Derek Watt all tweeted out statements in the last day saying they were contributing to the United for Waukesha Community Fund to help pay for medical expenses and funeral costs.

We sometimes forget to include the family members of these monsters in our prayers. This article talks about DB's mother who is blaming herself for posting his bail. My heart goes out to his family who is suffering the consequences of his actions.

The mother of the man accused of plowing his SUV into revelers at a suburban Milwaukee Christmas parade is wracked with regret for having bailed him out of jail just days earlier, his ex-girlfriend told The Post on Wednesday.
Dawn Woods wishes she hadn’t posted the $1,000 bond for her son, Darrell Brooks Jr., after he was accused of punching the mother of his child and intentionally striking her with his car on Nov. 2, according to the woman.
"She’s wrecked that people were killed as a result and she’s like, ‘I’m blaming myself, because had I not bailed him out, this wouldn’t have happened,'" said the ex, who asked to remain anonymous out of fear for her and her son’s safety.
