Tom Hickey, 25, was walking near a friend’s float at the back of the parade when he heard honking behind him. A man wearing a sweatshirt and gray hat who was driving the red Ford Escape was trying to make his way through the crowd, he said. Mr. Hickey said he thought the driver was lost.

Then, the driver took a right turn onto the main parade route, gunned the engine and moved through the parade route at what appeared to be top speed, he said.

“When he made that right turn, that’s when he turned really dangerous,” Mr. Hickey said.

Can't seem to quote from this article properly but this man's experience is yet another absolutely horrific account that's come from last night.
From link..
"I'm like 'Oh no.' My daughter stood up, I threw her out of the way, then I basically yelled, 'Get out of the way,' and my wife got out of the way, and by the time she did, the car came right past me within at least two feet," Kluka told Savannah Guthrie and Hoda Kotb. "I could've touched the car going by."
''Thomas Kluka Jr. was at the parade. He told TODAY he threw his daughter out of the way to avoid her being struck.

When I went to bed last night, the crawl on one of the news channels indicated one fatality with at least 20 injured. I was afraid that I'd learn this morning that were additional fatalities and many more injured in the senseless tragedy. So sad for the community. Prayers for all who are affected.

Is the presser still expected at 1:00PM central time today?
BBM. Yes, I am local and have not heard anything otherwise - roads still closed downtown and a friend of mine had to be escorted by SWAT guys to her house last night because she lives on Dunbar and ended up having to go pick up a prescription right after she was done in the parade. It's a complete s#itshow down here, people have to call the cops an hour prior to leaving to get a police escort to work if they are required to commute and many people are without ways to leave their homes to access food and other necessities.

Or turn on to another street, but he didn't stop or turn because he didn't want to. He wanted to run over all those innocent people.

I don't think he wanted to; he just didn't give a damn.

I just read through the suspect's criminal history posted upthread. This guy doesn't care about laws or people. Never has. Never will. JMO

From NYT: Five Dead in Wisconsin After Driver Plows S.U.V. Into Holiday Parade

“He was going from side to side, targeting people,” Mr. Kotlarek said. “The car bombed through. He was flying through there going intentionally from left to right.”

As tragic and horrific as the situation is, I am relieved to hear that it doesn’t appear to be related to the Rittenhouse verdict.

If it had been a cold, calculated, planned massacre in retaliation for the Rittenhouse case it would have been worse, as had been widely speculated on social media last night. I didn’t think so but hopefully it remains unrelated.

MOO

I agree. How sick it is that we are relieved at the idea that this may have “just” been something random. JMO.

I am curious as to what this suspects bond will be....

This case just proves the need for higher bail for offenders with prolonged violent records. $1000 cash is far too easy to obtain for someone like this 🤬🤬🤬, and time and time again we see these people committing significantly more violent crimes after being let out.

Easily $1 million plus. Cases that have had far less impact and victims in this county have been bonded at $1 million - I can only guess that the DA will have at a million minimum and there will likely be federal terrorism type charges too.

Once he saw the parade he knew he was on a parade route. Then he decided to continue driving through it and over people. He could have stopped. He’s not lost, he made a conscious decision to run over children and families.
It certainly appeared to me from watching video that he was trying to plow down as many people as possible. He was doing the opposite of avoiding them.

Waukesha Christmas parade: SUV driver ID'd, AP reports
AP officially identified him as POI and posted mugshot per FOX6.

Investigators are examining whether the SUV's driver may have been fleeing from a crime when he crashed into the paradegoers, a law enforcement official briefed on the matter told The Associated Press. The investigators were questioning the person in custody about that incident, which the official described as an altercation involving a knife.

The official, who cautioned the investigation was still in the early stages and was continuing to develop, could not discuss the investigation publicly and spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity.
